PRESIDENTS REPORT

In a season of great change the Dragons performed brilliantly both on and off the field. Premiership wise, this was one of our best seasons for a long time and congratulations to the following victorious teams – 10F, 10A, 12A, 16C, B2’s and B3’s Commiserations to the 14D’s who were beaten by the better side on the day.

Playing numbers were fairly similar to last season. We fielded 11 junior teams and 7 senior teams. Most pleasing was the number of U10 sides, 4 in total. These players are the future of the club and I believe our good relationship with the other local winter codes helps us to attract the young boys and girls to the game of cricket.

Like other sports the game has had to re define itself and work towards accommodating people’s changing lifestyles. In recognition of time poor parents cricket Australia, NSW Cricket and the local association have implemented changed formats. The initial stages commenced this season and saw the scrapping of the U8 competition and introduction of the Saturday morning T20 Blast held at Kareela playing fields. We fielded a combined U8 team with the Como club and from what I saw the T20 blast was a successful introduction to those new to cricket.

Other changes were introduced to the U10 age group. Reduced field sizes, overs and team numbers were the major parts adapted. General feedback seems to be fairly positive towards these changes. Next year my understanding is the U12 age group will also have some format changes to provide greater participation.

The season also saw the transition from the Cricket Online Scoring software to MyCricket. There were the usual problems with moving to other software platforms however at season’s end everyone seemed to have adapted to the new scoring software. While mentioning Cricket Online I would like to personally thank its architect and developer Tom Croucher. Tom spent many years with various junior clubs in the shire as well as on the SSJCA. Cricket Online was perfectly adapted to the Shire’s cricketers. As they say you don’t miss something until it has gone and this year showed that especially in the earlier part.

We have a couple of ex Dragon’s juniors going great guns in the cricketing world. Nick Amos, in his second year of grade cricket with the Sutherland club, made his debut in first grade mid way through the season. Well done Nick, your hard work and dedication shows what can be achieved. Another ex-Dragons junior Ben Dwarshuis had a fantastic year with the Sydney Sixers in this season’s Big Bash and was rewarded by being picked up in the Indian Premier League by the Kings X1 Punjab franchise. Ben was also selected in the Australian T20 Squad.

Another couple of our players were awarded life memberships. Congratulations to Matt Carroll and Chris Moreland on your achievement.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 7

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 8

Once again we saw a dramatic increase in organisations sponsoring our club. A huge thanks goes to Tim Russell and Chris Moreland who keep on bringing the sponsors in. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the sponsors of the club. They are listed in this yearbook.

Thank you also to all the parents who put their hands up to coach, manage, grade, select and help out with their respective teams. The game does not function without your input.

I would like to thank our executive - Neil Croker, Brad Moreland and Col Berry for your tireless efforts. Thank you also to Doug & Michelle Ritchie, Anthony Goodman and John Westlake for the time spent carrying out your committee roles.

Thank you to Ian Latham who put the yearbook together and made it possible. It was also nice to see Ian back again coaching one of our junior teams after a rest for one season.

Well done to those players finishing their junior careers. Good luck with those moving on to senior cricket whether that is playing local men’s cricket, Shires or Grade Cricket. I’m sure you will have fond memories of your time in juniors with the Dragons.

In closing let me once again thank everyone for their contributions to another successful season.

All the club news and events are available via our website and Facebook page. The Club looks forward to seeing you again next season.

SECRETARIES REPORT

The 2017/18 season will go down as one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history – four Junior Premierships (10A, 10E, 12A & 16C’s) and two Senior Premierships (B2 (JW) & B3). Commiserations to our 14D’s who were beaten in the Final after having an outstanding season finishing as Minor Premiers.

Prior to the start of the season the SSJCA & SSCA decided to move onto MyCricket to align with the requirements of CNSW. This had a major impact on our registration process and I would like to thank Michelle Ritchie and Ian Latham for entering all the player registrations into MyCricket.

Congratulations to Chris Moreland and Matthew Carroll on becoming the club’s 32nd & 33rd Life Members. Both players started playing for the club in 1993/94 and have continued to play the past 25 years.

After 8 seasons as the Clubs Uniform Officer, Anthony Goodman has decided to step down. During this period Anthony was instrumental in introducing the Club’s new Supporter Shirts and Jackets. Thank you Anthony for all your efforts and those last minute uniform requests on a Friday night.

Off the field our former Junior Payers, Ben Dwarshuis, Nick Amos and Brad Simpson continued to shine. Ben was selected in the Australian T20 Team that toured New Zealand and is currently in India playing for Kings X1 Punjab in the IPL. Nick became Sutherland District Grade Cricket Club’s 1st grade player number 269 when he made his debut on the 14th October 2017. Brad Simpson just finished playing for the Australian U16 Team against Pakistan.

This season Tim Russell and Chris Moreland continued on from the success of last year in their roles as Promotions Officers and brought in numerous new Sponsors.

Also this season the Junior Fielding Performance award was named the ‘Paul Waddell Trophy’ and the Senior Fielding Performance award named the ‘Greg Knowles Trophy’.

To all our sponsors thank you for your generous support throughout the year – without your donations the club would not be able to continue to provide new equipment for our teams.

To the Committee, Captains, Coaches, Managers, Scorers and helpers thank you for volunteering and being part of a successful season.

As we look towards next season and celebrate the Club’s 60th Anniversary we require new parents/players to join the Committee. The majority of the current Committee have served their time and will be stepping down in the near future. Please keep an eye out on our Facebook Page and Website for our AGM which will be held in early June.

TREASURERS REPORT

This year we saw 5 junior teams make the finals and 2 senior teams. With 4 junior winners 16C’s, 12A’s 10A’s and 10F’s and 2 senior winners B2 (JW)’s & B3’s. Congratulations to all teams and all individuals.

During the year the club made an operating profit of $8,796.85 compared to last season loss of $1,566.78 an increase of $10,363.63 over last year. The overall balances are very healthy at $53,069.51.

Highlights include: Cash balances of $53,069.51 up $8,796.85 on last season. Income was $46,119.78 down from $48,680.30 representing a decrease in number of players for both seniors and juniors and reduction to presentation receipts from senior presentation. Sponsorship/Donations for the year was $6,130.49, up $1,629.49 on last year. Our major sponsors include Club Engadine, Plus Fitness 24/7 Engadine and Generation Legal. A big thanks to all those others who contributed during the season, this helps in reducing registration fees and makes it more affordable for the average player. Thanks to both Tim Russell and Chris Moreland for their efforts this season to increase this over last year. Our Expenses were $37,322.93 down $12,924.15 compared to last season. This was mostly due to the contribution of the concrete and seating works at Anzac Oval of $4,000 in 2016/17 and lower uniform costs compared to last season. Uniform costs were down $5,529.15 due to stock pile in 2016/17 for 2017/18 season. Our fees paid to the association were in line compared to last year. The cost of balls was slightly lower than last season. Umpiring costs were down by $1,069.50 compared to last season. Our Rent and clubroom costs slightly higher compared to last year. Other Sundries costs were lower than last year due to the concrete and seating works of $4,000 in 2016/17.

Finally, thanks to all those who contributed in some way to making this a great club, whether its sponsors/advertisers, committee, coaches/managers, players or parents. Everyone plays some part towards the success of the club.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

Congratulations to our newest Life Members Matthew Carroll and Christopher Moreland who have just completed their twenty fifth consecutive season of playing for the Dragons. Both players joined the Club in the 1993/94 season with Chris playing in the U8’s and Matthew in the 10E side. Chris won numerous ‘A’ grade premierships as a keeper, but peaked as a batsman in 1995/96 with a batting average of 96 for his undefeated 10D Premiership team (picture below). Matt has been the Club’s most successful spinner taking well over 500 with the best figures of 9 for 16 in 2005/06, the Club’s second best ever figures.

1993/94 Year Book reported that this season was one of rebuilding after a number of years of low team numbers. The Club fielded 9 junior and 4 senior teams and the SSJCA introduced semi-finals for the first time with 5 of our sides - 10D, 12A, 14B, 16A and 16C competing in the semi’s. Our only successful side was the 16A’s who went on to win the Final from fourth position (Semi-finals were abandoned the following season). Our other success was the B3 team who won our first senior Premiership in seven seasons. This season saw the Club’s first U8 team take the field in the newly formed grade with Shaun Mealing coaching a team of twelve players, which included Chris Moreland and our very first female player, Christina Cuddy. The 1993/94 Year Book reports for Matt and Chris – MATTHEW CARROLL: Has lots of potential with bat and ball and played a couple of very good innings. 1993/94 10E Team: Cory Blake, Nick Campbell, Matthew Carroll, David Cook, Matthew Croughton, Ben Cutler, Aaron Meyer, Sanjay Patel, Matthew Pratten, Bryce Purcell, Peter Wackwitz and Luke Watts. Coach: Mel Croughton. CHRIS MORELAND: A great deal of potential and a menacing left arm bowler. Knows how to play cricket with great batting, fielding and wicket keeping skills. Not long now Chris till the big time. 1993/94 U8 Team: Brett Bullock, Nathan Bullock, Justin Champion, Christina Cuddy, Timothy Greenway, Mitchell Hatch, Craig Lowe, Peter Mealing, Matthew Newman, Christopher Moreland, Sunil Patel and Kurt Ridley. Coach: Shaun Mealing 1995/96 10D Undefeated Premiers

Chris averaged 96 with the bat this season. There are 4 players from this team that are still playing for the Club – Chris Moreland (25 years), Stuart Dibb (24 years), Dean Griffith (24 years) & Jonathon Ward (19 years).

10A TEAM REPORT – MINOR PREMIERS & JOINT PREMIERS

The Dragons 10As team for 2017/18 was a very talented and successful team, the boys went through the season undefeated with our only real close game being a tie in the final to finish as undefeated joint premiers. Every player contributed at important times throughout the season and the future looks bright for our club if these boys can stick together.

I would like to thank Kristyn and Michael Dundas for all their work as managers, Lil for his help at training and all the Parents for helping on game days and at training

NOAH ANDERSON-BARDEN: Un be known to all of us Nosey was the gun leg spinner in the comp, it wasn’t until just before Christmas he even told me he bowled spin but as soon as he started he was unplayable to opposition batsman. He also started the year on fire with the bat top scoring in our first game before working hard to continue to improve his leg spin

TYSON BURKE: This kid can do it all, a hard hitting batsman, who took the game away from other teams with the speed at which he could score. He was also the quickest bowler in the comp with his left arm pace. A natural athlete in the field Tyson had a great year for us and was very deserving of his selection in the Sutherland under 10 development squad

JAYDEN DUNDAS: Still eligible for the Under 8s this year, Jayden was never out of his depth, the most consistent bowler taking wickets all year with his nagging line and length, He also scored some important runs late in the year especially those vital runs in the final. Jayden was always 1 of our best in the field with his catching and ground fielding

MASON FARDELL: In his first season with the Dragons Mason had an outstanding year, he worked hard on his cricket each week at training and improved to the point where he could easily open the batting with his excellent technique and running between wickets, his left arm bowling was always dangerous, with another year of eligibility in the 10s he will be hard to stop next season

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 39

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 40

CONNOR GANDERTON: Our leading wicket taker for the year, Connor consistently took important wickets throughout the season with his excellent bowling, He also scored plenty of runs in a hurry for us this year with some of the best pull shots I saw from anyone and was always alert in the field

RYAN LILLIS: My mate Ryno can do it all, after a slow start with the bat he worked hard on picking the right ball to hit and never looked back, his winning innings in the final is something I will never forget showing maturity beyond his years to steer us to the winning total with no wickets to spare, he also improved his keeping along the way and was a consistent wicket taker throughout the year.

FRED MORANDO: One of my most experienced players, Freddy could always be counted on to give the boys a lift when we most needed it. 1 of the best fielders in the entire comp, and the hardest hitter of a ball I have seen at this age. His bowling can be unplayable when he gets it right.

KADE PAYNE: One of our most consistent performers this year, Kade scored plenty of runs with a nice straight bat, he was one of the few players I saw who could hit straight drives for 4, he also took regular wickets with his bowling with the opposition unable to control his ability to get extra bounce

THOMAS POWELL: Was one of our most Improved players for the year to the point he was our opening bowler in the final with his excellent left arm swing bowling. Tom always had a smile on his face even when he suffered a couple of the most unlucky run outs you will see. Watching him top score in our last game was 1 of my favourite moments of the year

LUCAS SHEEHY: Another of our bottom age players, Lucas had a very good year, With his excellent technique he scored plenty of runs with the bat, combined with being our first choice Wicket Keeper. He works really hard on his cricket and was another player rewarded with selection in the Sutherland under 10s Development squad

LACHLAN SNELL: What an impressive all round cricketer, Lachie worked hard on his batting and has developed into 1 of the best batsman in the grade, a beautiful technique combined with hard hitting and great running. He also bowls fast and accurate along with being an excellent fieldsman and quality back up wicket keeper. Also a much deserved selection in the Sutherland Development squad.

COACH: John Sheehy MANAGER: Kristyn Dundas

10B TEAM REPORT

Season 2017/18 proved to be a very successful one for the 10B group of players. We assembled a talented bunch coming up from under 8’s mod cricket alongside some older boys who had played under the “when you are out, you are out” system previously. Despite only 3 wins throughout the season the team spirit, comradery and enjoyment of the game from the squad was outstanding making it very satisfying for the coach, manager, supporters and parents. Throughout the course of the summer the boys improved their skills considerably and their confidence grew. Much of this improvement can be attributed to our coach Cameron Wheatley who worked with the team and built the skills around some fun training drills and plenty of encouragement. Cameron was ably assisted by several of the other parents; thanks to Craig Beencke, Matt Te Hira and Craig Brownscombe in particular.

Junior sport can’t go ahead without lots of helpers. Thanks to all parents and family for getting the players to training and the matches on time each week and for your willingness to assist with day to day match duties such as scoring. Special thanks must go to Denise Martin and Leonie Beencke in this regard.

To all players, thanks for making Saturday mornings throughout summer such an enjoyable time. We wish you well in your winter sport as well as your cricketing endeavours for the future. We have the nucleus of a strong team here and it would be terrific to build upon this in season 2018/19.

BRADFORD BEENCKE: A standout performance for Bradford in his debut year of cricket. We saw significant improvement over the season with bat and ball. Bradford’s enthusiasm was infectious and his willingness to learn and encourage his team mates entitles him to the 10B “Team Player” award.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 42

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 43

KYLE BLAKENEY: A really determined effort from Kyle this season. Some fierce pace bowling conceded very few runs and pleasingly sundries were kept to a minimum. Kyle’s batting improved out of sight which was awesome to see.

ZACHARY BROWNSCOMBE: One of the best bowling actions for a player of his age. He combined pace and spin to bamboozle opposing batsmen. Zach batted consistently throughout the year but it was in the field he really shone taking out the 10B fielding award for his livewire performance.

MITCHELL BROWNSCOMBE: When tasked with the captaincy Mitch took the team to within a whisker of knocking off one of the top teams in our competition. A really great guy to have around the team. Always contributing and willing to help out.

LUCAS COUSEMACKER: Lucas was one of our most economical bowlers this year. Always very straight made his bowling difficult to get away and he conceded only a handful of sundries. One of the best defensive batsmen in our competition and an absolute whippet between the wickets.

ETHAN DRISCOLL: Superb fielding in general and when the team needed a crucial wicket, Ethan took it. When we needed a few runs, Ethan got them. A super reliable and consistent player he has a great understanding and feel for the game that will see him excel throughout his career.

MITCHELL DURIC: Mitch earned the 10B award as our most improved player this season. His bowling and fielding in particular were areas that he really developed in. Behind the stumps as wicketkeeper when one of the games was in the balance he was solid as a rock not to concede any byes and preventing extra runs.

COOPER MARTIN: Congratulations to Cooper who took out the 10B bowling award for season 2017/18. Not only did he regularly take important wickets, his line and length was superb so he gave away very few runs and extras. A young man who, when the confidence is up, deals mostly in boundaries with the bat in hand.

OLIVER TE HIRA: A break out season with the willow featuring some power batting that plundered countless boundaries and 1 towering 6 saw Ollie receive the team’s batting award. His wily medium pace surprised many batsmen and a rocket arm from the outfield saved plenty of runs.

THOMAS WHEATLEY: Toward the back end of the season Tom really stood up to become an influential member of our team. His improvement with the bat was really pleasing and he accumulated a top score of 21 in the last round which secured us a last gasp victory.

COACH: Cameron Wheatley MANAGER: Pat Blakeney

10E TEAM REPORT

It was a great season for the 10E team during the 2017/18 cricket season. A season that started off with mixed results and a few losses, came through the mid-season with a number wins, so by the last game they had a chance to make the final. The players in the team throughout the season really showed that they wanted to make the most of being a part of the team, and apart of cricket, and enjoy playing the game for years to come. It was wonderful to see all the team playing together and encouraging each other to play at their best. And it was great to see by mid-way through the season, that they team was playing consistently good cricket, and was challenging for wins every game.

Big thank you to Steve Chalmers for coaching the team. He helped all the players become better throughout the season, and really focused on the areas each player was having issues with.

ALEX CASPERSONN: Alex was a standout player for the team this year, our highest scoring batsman for the season. Every time Alex would bat, you knew runs would be scored. His batting technique was strength to his ability to score quick runs, and score a lot of 4's. He had the capability to score right around the ground. His bowling was also superb. Line and length was great, other players found it hard to score runs against him. His fielding was great as well. Was always running in to field the ball, or to help back up the stumps. Was also one of the team's best as keeper.

RORY CASPERSONN: Rory was another of our standout players. He showed great batting skills. Was able to scores runs consistently, and to score around the ground. His bowling was fantastic, was difficult to score against with superb control of line and length. His ability to bowl straight down the pitch with pace consistently, led him to take wickets frequently, and was the team's most economic bowler. His fielding was great, was always energized when on the field. His throwing was accurate, which lead to a few run outs. He loves playing the game of cricket.

His batting has improved, he has rock solid defence, and is beginning to play strokes frequently and score good runs. His fielding has improved, particularly his energy whilst fielding, and throwing back to the stumps. Great work Charles.

BRODIE ROUTH: Brodie has had a great season. His bowling ability was one of the best of the team. Was a formidable bowler for any batsman and his accuracy in delivery was great. Lead him to be our leading wicket taker for the season which was thoroughly deserved. He showed improvement in his fielding and backing up to the wicket, and his batting matured throughout the season, particularly his defensive stokes and running between the wickets.

DEAKIN STRUTHERS: Deakin showed super improvements this season. He showed great persistence with his bowling, line and length were great. Well done Deakin.

NOAH TURNER: Noah has had a year. His batting has come of age and he is able to play a variety of stokes more consistently and score more runs frequently. His energy around the team and for the game is fantastic. He's a great character for the team.

SAMUEL VERRELL: Samuel had a great first year of cricket. He showed batting skills straight away, particularly with his left shot over the slips. He has improved to have a variety of stokes and can score good runs. He bowling was solid, was able to keep runs lows and take wickets. His fielding was really good, particular in his backing up and throwing back to the stumps. He looked as though he really enjoys his cricket and being part of the team. Great stuff Samuel.

JAMES YOCK: James has had a fantastic first season of cricket. He was one of team's most consistent performers. His batting was great, really showed a variety of stroke play, which was key in a few games where scores were tight. His running between the wickets was one of the team's best. His bowling was great. He has developing a spinning action, which troubled opposition frequently. His energy in the field was outstanding. He was a brilliant team player. Good on you James.

10F TEAM REPORT – PREMIERS

What an amazing year it was for the mighty 10F’s, ‘The Smithy’s’. I would like to start by thanking all the parents for their support over the season. Paul and I appreciated your trust and the helping out when and where required.

However the stars were the players. All the players were new to this wonderful sport and the improvement from round 1 to the win in the grand final was amazing. As a coach, it is very satisfying when you see skill sets and game awareness improve. However a lot of the positive adjustments are really up to the players.

All players attended training regularly, which proved to be the catalyst to the team’s success. They were a highly competitive bunch, but were best of mates. The greatest achievement these boys accomplished this year was appreciating that the game of cricket is based on respect and being a gentleman. They certainly displayed this throughout the season, especially in the grand final.

There were some standout achievements throughout the season, however all players contributed and supported one another to ensure that the team result was the most important.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 48

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 49

PATRICK CHRISTMANN: You had a terrific season. Your bowling improved significantly over the year. You listened to all the feedback given to you and your finger positioning on the ball was making the ball move around and make batting hard for your opponents. Pat you batted well and supported every player with your committed running between the wickets. For next season practice hard and learn how to tie your shoelaces up properly (haha).

JAKE DAVIDSON: JD you were a bundle of energy. It took you a while to find your feet in bowling but once you did, you were very effective. Your attitude during the games was great. You were determined and always working on tips given to you. The runs flowed for you in batting when you believed in yourself. You were a real team player and always had a smile plastered all over your face.

TOM FAULKNER: What an amazing season you had Tom. Ranked number 2 in batting in the whole competition, scoring 216 runs and having a highest score of 31 (across all u/10 competitions you were the second highest run scorer too). Your footwork at the crease was natural and well beyond your years. You cleared the fence with several sixes and many 4’s. Your bowling was accurate and very quick. You struck fear into the opposition and had them ducking for cover. Your fielding was excellent and your accuracy when throwing at the stumps was consistent. Well done on a great season mate.

GABRIEL HAMMEL-WESTON: Gabe your season was one of perseverance and a great attitude. I will never forget the look on your face when you scored your first 4. It was priceless. Your running between the wickets was outstanding and gave us a lot of extra runs. Your bowling was one area that really improved. You were meticulous with your technique and honing that skill. Well done.

REAGAN HEFFERNAN: Heffo, your cheeky grin covered the real assassin in you. Towards the end of the season your batting defence was stronger than Alcatraz. You focused on every delivery and dispatched it accordingly. Hence why you were eventually ranked number 7 in the competition for batting. I could always rely upon you with your bowling, and you never gave the batsman an inch and never gifted them any runs. You fielded well all season and took some super catches.

COOPER HOLMES: Cooper your batting was amazing. Scoring 8 sixes and even more with 52 fours, you dominated all bowling attacks. You were ranked the number 1 batsman in the competition and scored a massive 309 runs. The most runs out of all under 10 competitions. Your bowling was fast and improved dramatically in the second half of the season, which saw you ranked number 7 in the competition. Your bowling average of 12.86 was well deserved. You fielded well with many run outs- many of which were throws at the stumps and several catches.

BENJAMIN MCDONOUGH: Stix you improved so much over the competition. Your running between the wickets was outstanding and your batting developed well throughout the season. You listened to all feedback and actioned it with plenty of runs. You were ranked 8th in the competition in runs which was a fitting result for all your efforts. Stix your bowling was accurate and rarely leaked any extras. You frustrated the batsman with your line and length, which rewarded you with wickets. Well done.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 49

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 50

JAKE SIMPSON: Simmo, I loved coaching a fella who wasn’t scared to back himself. When you started the season, you bowled pretty quick, then you changed everything and you were a ‘Leggy’, and a good one too. You moved the ball off the pitch and bedazzled the batsman. For an 8 year old to land the ball in the right areas with your limited experience in this trade was great. This is why you were ranked 10th in bowling stats. Your batting was solid and gathered runs when we most needed it. Ranked number 3 in the competition with batting and amassing 99 runs proved that you are truly an all- rounder.

ALEX SMITH: If there was ever an award for a player who depicted courage and determination……Wombat you win. Every week you were there trying your best. Your fielding and bowling improved with you stopping many runs through the cover area. Your batting through the season improved with your dismissal rate dropping considerably in the latter part of the season. The players loved being around you and I really enjoyed those inquisitive questions you would ask.

LIAM WENDT: Engadine Dragons has a new Jeff Thomspon. I know Thommo played for Bankstown CC back in the day but he is definitely in the spirit of you Liam. The speed and accuracy of your deliveries had you ranked 12th in bowling stats and the work on the ball that you achieved was excellent. In batting, your defence was rock solid. You ranked 5 in batting with 44 runs in total. Your attitude was always committed. You took feedback on board and improved in those areas. You fielded well all season and possessed a really good arm.

12A TEAM REPORT – PREMIERS

THE SEASON: We commenced the season with a mixture of seven second year boys from the previous 12A competition, three from last season’s 12C’s and one each from the 12D and 10A’s. The team had a great mix of characters that made for lively Saturday mornings.

The season itself started off well with the team firing on all cylinders and four straight wins before going down to Seagulls in rain affected match, which was well within reach of victory before the game was abandoned. The wheels became wobbly in round six with the side just falling across the line over Bangor before a reality check in the following round, which saw the worst fielding performance of the season gifting the match to Como-Jannali. Back on track again until round ten when the boys struggled to score runs against Seagulls bowling attack. The team finished clear second and into the Final as a result of 7 wins and 3 losses.

THE FINAL: Up against the undefeated Cronulla Seagulls at Kareela South. Dragons won the toss and batted first on a great ground that would provide good value for shots by both teams. Everybody chipped in with the bat to post a competitive score of 7 for 136 off our 50 overs, Lachlan (46), Alex (25no) and Koby (19no) the leading scorers.

In reply Seagulls struggled to gain momentum with the constant flow of wickets caused by excellent bowling and some exceptional fielding and catching. In the end the run rate got too much and in Seagull’s efforts to catch up collapsed to be all out for 97 in the 37th over. Best of the bowlers were Josh 2 for 4, Kobey 2 for 10, Lachlan R 2 for 12 and Tom 1 for 15. The most pleasing thing that came out of the Final was the fielding that we spent so much time on during the season finally firing with 6 catches and 3 run outs. Zane 2 catches, Lachlan R 1 catch & 1 run out, Tom 1 catch, Lachlan M 1 catch, Riley 1 catch, Elijah 1 run out, Kobey 1 run out and Mackay involved in all 3 run outs at keeper whipping off the bails.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 51

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 52

LACHLAN RITCHIE: (Capt.) The best all round cricketer in the competition. Champions stand tall in big matches and under pressure, which Lachlan did in spades with 46 runs, 2 for 12, run out and a brilliant catch in the Final. Lachlan captained the side well, but no better than the leadership he showed in the Final where he pulled all the right strings. This was a great season from a very determined and talented young man. We even got a smile out of him at the end of the Final when the job was done. Champion.

THOMAS SHEEHY: (V. Capt.) Lent good support to Lachlan with the field settings and pretty handy at the toss. Has talent with the bat, but unfortunately managed to get himself out just when he looked set. Tom’s leggies proved a revelation after Christmas having so much control and imparting so many revolutions was great for such a young spinner. Tom will cause a lot of damage in seasons to come. In the field he left his best to last taking one of the all time great catches in the Final that put his team in the box seat. Thommo was one of the great characters of the team. Thanks mate.

ZANE BELL: One of the quieter members of the team, but did all his talking with the bat and ball. Has a good batting technique and great concentration at the crease and will only get better as he gets stronger. Changing to spin later in the season gave him some good results with the ball. Opening the batting in the Final, Zane did an outstanding job for his team and the two great catches he took extinguished any chance of a comeback from Seagulls. Zane was a pleasure to coach.

LUKE CARTER-BENJAMIN: Missed the first three matches of the season due to a stint in the Royal Canadian Mounties. When he finally played he took out ‘Man of the Match’ opening the batting, a batting position which suited his gritty determination. Like Zane Luke has a good technique, but he too will get better as he gets stronger. Luke’s leggies improved as he became more confident within the team and will take many wickets in the seasons to come. Luke was very easy to coach.

ELIJAH DUNDAS: The team could always rely on Elijah’s to bowl well and pick up important wickets and had the second lowest economy rate in the team, but you already knew that didn’t you Elijah? Can bat very well and proved it on a couple of occasions when he took on the bowlers and hit them to all corners of the field, but once he becomes more confident at the crease he will really hit his straps with the bat. Elijah has another season in the U12’s and will be a handful for any opposition. An absolute pleasure to coach and very handy for a score update.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 52

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 53

RILEY EDWARDS: Mr. Cricket was by far the most enthusiastic player in the side and lived and breathed cricket throughout the season. Got the team off to some great starts opening the batting, but his greatest improvement came with the ball eventually taking over the opening bowling role in the last few rounds and Final in which he bowled eight great overs. Riley also took a screamer of a catch to dismiss Seagulls danger man and top scorer of the Final. Riley was definitely the personality of the team and kept us all smiling on Saturday mornings. Well done mate.

KOBEY FREER: Kobey was very serious about his cricket and put in many hours of training to achieve his tremendous performances throughout the season. With the bat Kobey was the rock of the side with a batting average above fifty throughout the season and along with Lachlan R was instrumental in many of our wins. Kobey’s spin gave the team the variety it required as he consistently tied down the opposition innings. Great hands close to the bat and in the slips taking a number of blinders during the season. Bob you had an exceptional season.

MACKAY JOHNSON: Macca was a real team player and could be heard from the boundary supporting his teammates and adding a buzz to the side in the field. One of our two wicket keepers Macca improved throughout the season with a number of good catches and three important run out assists in the Final. Plenty of potential with the bat and always looked good at the crease and very aggressive, but just needs know when to attack and when to defend. Macca was a pleasure to coach.

KOBY LILLIS: Was our number one keeper only conceding 22 byes, took some great catches and stumpings throughout the season and set the standard for our fielding. His glove and footwork improved immensely during the season and was great standing up to the stumps for our many spinners. Koby batted in a number of positions this season and proved consistent anywhere he batted and his 19 not out in the Final at number 5 proved invaluable as he guided the team to the 50 over mark. Bowled a couple of overs, but the less said the better. Great season.

LACHLAN McKENZIE: Best athlete in the side and being left handed made him the ideal candidate to field in the most important position of point. Lachlan’s was one of our leading run scorers throughout the season and has the potential to be one of the best bats in the competition. Lachlan had great success bowling his left arm orthodox spin and proved difficult for the opposition bats to attack him. Lachlan is a very laid back character and kept his team mates well entertained with his great sense of humour. Well done.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 53

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 54

ALEX TRENBERTH: Alex really hit his straps after Christmas and started to fulfil the potential that we saw glimpses of before the break. Everything seemed to drop in place with his bowling with him rattling the stumps on a regular basis. Alex was an absolute gun in the field with one of the biggest arms in the competition and his fielding in the deep was spectacular. Alex’s sliding and diving pickups on the boundary and his returns over the stumps saved numerous runs. Alex left his best for last with a swashbuckling 25 not out off 11 balls in the Final that left Seagulls shell shocked. Great season Alex.

JOSHUA WHIPPY: Pips Luke for the quietest playing in the side by a good margin, but with the ball he was a silent assassin. With his height and action once he fills out will be the quickest bowler in the competition and terrorising the opposition. Always reliable in the field with a good pair of hands and I think I actual heard him talk in the field in the Final. Joshua’s batting is getting there and will fall in place in the not too distant future, but when he did fire he gave the ball a hell of a thump. Josh picked up two wickets in the Final, which included the last, clean bowled. Another boy that was easy to coach.

BIANCA McKENZIE: Thank you for helping the team out in round no.3 when we were down on troops. Bianca only played the one match for us, but excelled representing Sutherland in the Mollie Dive Shield competition. Bianca was the Rep team’s captain, wicket keeper and leading run scorer with 159 runs at an average of 39.8 with a top score of 59 in the 4 match series. Thanks Bianca.

PARENTS: Thank you to all the parents for getting their boys to training and the matches on time. Also thank you to everyone that helped out with the field set up and the scoring each Saturday

morning.

I would like to give a special thank you to Marty who was always available for throw downs on match day and helping out at training. Also thank you to Chris and Corrie who helped out at training. Thank you to Emma for taking so many great photos at the Final, many of which can be seen throughout the Annual Report.

Last, but not least thank you to the Johnson’s for offering their home and hosting the post Final BBQ. It was a great night for all the boys.

MANAGER: What can you say about Michelle, plenty! I have had many managers over the years, but Michelle wins hands down. All I would need to do is turn up at training or the match and coach, the rest was all done. The team app Michelle set up was great and kept us all inline throughout the season and was a great alarm clock on Saturday mornings.

Thanks to Doug who filled in on the odd occasion (not as good).

ASSISTANT COACH: Thank you Craig for all your help this season, both at training and on Saturday mornings. Without all the time and effort you put in the boys wouldn’t have improved and achieved as much as they did this season. I’m sure all the boys appreciated the work you did with them all. Last and most importantly thanks for standing at square leg each Saturday morning while I was sitting back sipping my coffee!

12B TEAM REPORT

Whilst the rub of the green did not go our way this season, each and every player should be, as I am, very proud of themselves for what they achieved this year individually and, as a team. They gave it their all this year and, above all, played cricket within the spirit of the game.

The focus this year for our team was to a) make each game enjoyable and memorable b) learn additional cricketing skills and c) take the opportunity to shine when it comes up.

Here is a little on each of our players… Both “Magic” Maeve and Jacob “loosen-up” Chapman worked hardest this year at improving both bowling and batting technique. They listened carefully at training and applied what they learned on game day. The last game of the season showed this. Jacob has acquired the skill of shaping the ball across the batter delivering great results for our slip cordon and, to finish the season off, Maeve bowled the ball of the season. A great Yorker dismissing the other team’s best batter. Well done both of you!

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 57

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 58

Our “swing kings” Bailey and Balin were our most accurate and dangerous bowlers. When our backs were against the wall, both bowled well to stifle the oppositions scoring ability. Bailey excelled as our standout point fielder this year and found just enough strength with the bat in the last round to get his first “six”. Balin unfortunately missed the last couple of games due to injury but during the season, Balin was our most consistent bowler and, our batting spine keeping us in the game.

Hayden (Haydos) kept up our teams moral when it would, on occasions, start to get flat particularly with a couple of good bats at the crease. Haydos’s “one liners” would quite often have both umpires quietly chuckling away. Aside from the moral piece, Haydos displayed nice spin bowling and, batted with determination and flair. Of note was his exceptionally good wicket keeping skills also. Very impressive Haydos!

Patrick (Patty), Angus (Gussy) and Koby (Kobes) were our strike pacemen with the ball. When “on song” they would have opposition batters quaking in their boots. These three lads showed a natural ability to bowl good variation. The batters didn’t know what was coming. Patty and Kobes could also score runs very quickly and get our run rate up almost every game. Most notably this season was Angus’s last dig where he batted with power and patience scoring a marvellous and unbeaten 50. “Top shelf” performance lads.

Aiden S (Mr Stewart) and Kyle “the K-man” were our teams “doctors”. Whether it be with the bat or ball, they settle down the play with a certain calculated calmness. When we would lose a few quick wickets, these two were the ones that steadied the ship. When we were “bleeding” runs with the ball, these two slowed down an opposition’s run rate nicely. In the field as well, they contributed to saving many runs whenever and wherever they could. Great season lads!

Last but not least, Aidan W (Cowboy) and Lucas (Tiger) had a top, well rounded season. These two tried their hearts out in the field. Tiger took a classic catch at first slip to round out the season (what a catch!) and Cowboy had proved to all teams he was dangerous when he was fielding in the covers or at mid-wicket. He quickly became our run-out specialist claiming scalp after scalp. Both batted well getting us runs when they were most vital. They never gave up with the ball whether it was Tiger with his leg spin or Cowboy with his medium pacers. Great season both of you.

Thank you to Kirstan our team manager. Kirstan did an outstanding job managing the team. Kirstan’s organisation and commitment to the team was second to none. On behalf of the team, thank you Kirstan.

Thanks to all the Mum’s, Dad’s, family and friends who chipped in to help out and, came to support us. Finally, thanks team for the opportunity to coach you. I hope you got as much out of the season as I did.

I hope to see you back next season,

12D TEAM REPORT

What a fantastic group of young men I took over as coach of this year. We had a mix of experienced players and nearly half the team made up of “first timers” to the competitive game.

One of the most pleasing parts of this year was even when we lost we were not blown out the park we were always in the game no matter which team we came up against.

We started the season with a win and as a new coach I was extremely pleased and looking forward to future success in the season. Things did not continue as planned but concentrating on fairness every player would always get to Bowl and to Bat in each game.

If we played at the start of the season the way we finished with every player starting to really hit their straps and the improvement of some players going through the roof the season may as well have been very different. Our main issue is with our rate of scoring we didn’t lose wickets we just did not score quick enough. Something to learn from leading into next year especially in the shorter version of the game.

All in all it was an extremely enjoyable season and getting to coach some fantastic young men I must say was an absolute pleasure.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 61

JAYDEN DRISCOLL: Jayden was new to the game this year and gradually came out of his shell as the year went on. Always present at practice and quietly going about the business of improving each and every week. Finishing the season with his highest batting score of 27 not out was a fantastic achievement.

LIAM GUNNELL: Liam proved himself as Mr reliable with his bowling and could always be called upon to have a solid spell when needed. With his best bowling figures of 1/7 and top score of 14 not out he was an asset to the team.

KYSON HILL: Another new player to the game Kyson came into the year ready to learn. With great improvement in his bowling and batting as the year went on his accuracy with the ball towards the end of the year while bowling was vastly improved. Best bowling figures for the year of 1/13 and a top score of 10 not out.

WILL MARCIC: Will showed from the start his ability to control the ball while bowling and his ability to be a main stay in an innings with solid defence. With 7 maidens and best figures of 2/8 his bowling was essential to keeping the oppositions score down to a minimum. His high score of 33 not out showed he was a very handy all-rounder.

WILLIAM MILLIKEN: William’s ability with the bat was apparent from the start but could not transfer it onto the field to begin with. By the end of the season he was connecting beautifully and showing the promise. Also useful with the ball with best figures of 1/7 he could be relied upon whenever required.

SETH O’KEEFE: Seth another new player to cricket but you wouldn’t have known. With a hat trick in the season and 3rd best batting figures in the comp he was an asset to the team. Averaging 42 for the season with a top score of 53 not out and best bowling figures of 3/7 he is an all-rounder for the future.

JACKSON SHILLETO: Jackson also being new to the game came into the season full of enthusiasm to learn everything he possibly could. His best bowling figures of 1/3 showing his efficiency with the ball towards the end and always keen to keep wicket and his improvement with the bat meant he had a very strong finish to the year hopefully keeping that momentum leading into next season.

JOSH STEWART: Josh our resident spinner was an asset to the team displaying natural leadership ability with the team. A solid fielder through the entire season and always troubling the batters with his spin not easy to get away. A top score of 23 with the bat showcasing his ability all around the game.

COREY TURNER: Corey was the Mr energetic of the team which proved invaluable in the field always backing up and getting to everything he possibly could. Saying this, his bowling and batting were always on the ball. His best bowling figure of 2/15 and top score of 27 not out shows this. He scoring rate kept us in the game consistently in our games pushing for singles at every opportunity.

JAKE WALLACE: Jake had a slow start to the season with bat but his improvement at the end was amazing. 17 not out in his final game showing how far he had improved. Always a threat with the ball whether bowling or fielding he was a player not to mess with. Best figures of 3/21 and lots more wickets Jake showed us what he could do.

14A TEAM REPORT

The 14A team are a great bunch of boys and tried very hard at improving their cricket and competing in each of the games they played. Even though the boys finished the season with only one win, they continued to improve over the course of the season as evidenced in the second round where four losses were by 13 runs or less, including against the two grand finalists. The team struggled for numbers most weeks but this seemed to develop character and resilience amongst the boys as the season progressed. There were many pleasurable moments including a gutsy first innings loss to Caringbah where we got to bat for five of the six hours and the father son game in the last training session of the season. There were many other highlights. We enjoyed coaching each of the boys, they are all fine young men and we hope to see everyone back playing next season.

The team was made up of the following players:

LACHLAN BROWNSCOMBE: Lachlan is a talented cricketer and was rewarded with his selection in the shield side. His leg spin bowling was an asset to the team and provided variety to our bowling attack. He bowled many tight spells and bowled well in partnership with the fast bowlers. Lachlan started to deliver on his batting potential and looked good many times at the crease.

RILEY CUSSEN: Riley was the only first year Under 14’s player in the team and he handled the step up well. He has a good batting technique that stood up to the fastest bowlers in the competition. Riley also shows promise with the ball and his left arm action is a very handy attribute.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 63

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 64

KYAN HOLDER: Kyan had an unfortunate run of injuries during the season that either kept him out or caused him pain while playing. We did however see what an outstanding bowler he is with some great spells of bowling. We also enjoyed watching Kyan’s free-spirited batting and the comedy he brought to the team.

ZACK JOHNSON: Zack is an imposing sight with the ball in hand. His bowling got better and better as the season went on and by the end of the season he was opening the bowling. ‘Chuck’ is a real athlete and used his speed to stop anything that came his way on the boundary. I’m not sure if Zack is a big fan of batting but he came to life in the last game with some big hits.

HAYDEN LINDSAY: Hayden was outstanding again this season with three 50’s and a 43 from the eight games he played. He picked up a lot of pace over the offseason to be one of the most threatening bowlers in the competition. Hayden came back better than ever after a broken and dislocated thumb to show his class.

BEAU MCINERNEY: Beau is a great team player, constantly talking and encouraging his team mates and will do anything for the benefit of the team. Beau is a terrific bowler who bowls with a great economical rate by putting the ball in the right areas. He is a tough nuggetty batsman who fights hard to create partnerships and to protect his wicket.

JAKE MELLOR: Jake did a great job for the team opening the batting and was rewarded for his persistence and fighting spirit with a terrific innings in the last game. Jake puts his body on the line in the field, stopping anything that comes his way and took the most catches of anyone this season.

CALEB NEWTON: Caleb has the best throwing arm in the team, a safe pair of hands and makes fielding look easy. He is also a very capable wicket keeper and had a knack of frustrating the opposition when he was batting. He shrugged off any opposition banter that came his way and found it humorous.

LUKE RITCHIE: Luke had some good innings and bowled tightly during the season. He captained the team well by changing plans to adapt to the situation of the game and by his efforts in staying positive in the field.

KYE ROBSON: Kye did an excellent job for us behind the stumps, with a good pair of hands and also standing up to the stumps to keep the pressure on. He competed well with the bat by pushing the gaps and also worked hard to create good partnerships.

NATHAN TRUDGEN: Nathan worked very hard at improving his game, fields very well and is positive on the field. He bowls very well by pitching the ball up and deceiving the batsmen with his flight. Nathan’s highlight for us this season was his aeroplane celebration after dismissing the opposition’s best bat.

THAL WHEATLEY: Thal has a lot of potential in all cricketing aspects. He can bowl some unbelievable balls and hit some sweetly timed shots and with a bit more patience within himself will continue to develop into a fine cricketer. Thal is a good fielder and makes positive contributions to the team chatter.

A big thanks to Mark for coaching the side and Andrew for his managerial expertise. Thanks also for the help and support of all other parents. You played a big part in making this season so enjoyable.

14D TEAM REPORT – MINOR PREMIERS & RUNNERS UP

The Dragons 14D’s had an absolutely fantastic season, finishing as well-deserved Minor Premiers but unfortunately being out-played on the day and being defeated by Como-Jannali in the Grand Final.

It was a strange season in some ways. With only 4 teams in the competition, it meant that we played each of the other teams 3 or 4 times throughout the season and everybody – players, coaches, managers, scorers – all got to know each other quite well. This was good for the boys however as the more they got to know their opposition, the more they were able to think about their cricket – how to bowl to certain batsmen, which bowlers to defend against, which to attack etc.

With Bangor not winning a game throughout the season, it meant that the battle was between the three remaining teams for just the two spots in the final. It was very closely fought, with each of the three teams beating each of the others at various times, but to the credit of the Dragons they finished on top of the ladder and were the first to book their spot in the Grand Final due to a couple of very close victories in crucial matches late in the season.

The Grand Final itself did not go to plan with Como-Jannali getting some early breakthroughs with the ball to get them off to a good start, and then had a couple of strong partnerships with the bat late in the day to steer them to victory. But it was a great day nonetheless, played between two teams that had already had some tight matches throughout the season and in doing so had developed a great deal of mutual respect for each other. Despite the result, Grand Final day was a great celebration of an awesome season played in a great spirit.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 66

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 67

Key to the boy’s success this season was that as individuals every single one of them improved their games in one way or another, and as teammates they came together brilliantly and supported each other and all had a great time doing it. It was one of those seasons that was enjoyable for all involved, and one that you hope future seasons will be like.

A big thanks must go to Steve “Eddie” Hardman for his dedication to coaching the boys and instilling a great sense of sportsmanship in them, and to all the parents who assisted with umpiring, scoring, helping out at training, getting everybody to and from the games and everything else that needs doing. It really was a great team effort and many people contributed to making it such a great season to be involved with.

Congratulations and well done boys on a great year. Hopefully we can see them all come back and stay together for season 2018/19 and aim to go one better than we did this year.

16A TEAM REPORT

It was a tough year for the 2018 Dragons 16A team. We were young and inexperienced playing against some high quality opposition week in and week out with no easy games. The effort from the boys was always there, they pushed each other every week at training trying to improve their results, in the back half of the comp their effort was rewarded with a memorable win against St Pats highlighted by the twin centuries from Tyler and Corey. There were plenty of other quality individual performances throughout the year and obvious improvements from all players.

I would like to thank Dave Touma for his outstanding effort managing the team this year along with the Steve Johnston, Steve Jacka and Scott Alford for their long stints in the field umpiring. Thanks also to the Parents for helping with scoring, field set up and food and drink throughout the year.

COREY ALFORD: 5 Wickets, 2 Catches and some late order runs was a quality effort again for Corey, it wasn’t as rewarding as Corey’s previous successful seasons for the dragons, but it certainly wasn’t because of a lack of ability or effort as he works hard on his bowling and should have a good year in the 16s again next year

TAJ ALLEN: With 5 Wickets and 3 catches as well as some useful runs, Taj contributed well to the team in his first year of A Grade Cricket, Taj puts plenty of work into his batting and bowling and should see plenty of reward next year with another year of junior cricket.

CATHAL BRADY: Playing his first season of A Grade in his final year of Juniors, Cathal made huge improvements as the year went on, taking 5 wickets and a catch but it was his innings against Miranda late in the year that was most fun to watch.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 69

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 70

LAYTHEN CARLISLE: One of the hardest workers in the team, Laythen was always early to training to practice his bowling, taking some wickets and scoring runs late in the year was a great reward for his effort, another year in 16s next year should provide plenty more runs and wickets

DANE COOMBS: Playing his final year of junior cricket for the club this year, Dane was the co-captain of the team who led from the front all year opening the batting and bowling spin or pace at various times to suit the team needs. A terrific fielder who always gave his best at training and games. He also played rep cricket in the president’s cup and some metro cup games for Randwick this season. Well- liked by his peers and always a positive influence on the younger members of the team

WILL CRAGGS: Unfortunately, Will missed a few games during the year, much to the pleasure of opposition teams who were genuinely scared of the sheer pace he bowls at, he finished with 8 wickets a handful of runs as well as some terrific ground fielding.

HAMISH JACKA: A very talented left hand opening batsman playing his first year of A grade cricket, Hamish was the rock we built our innings around all year. Scoring 226 runs and taking a couple of important wickets. Hamish was deservedly picked to play rep cricket for the first time this year and is primed for a big year in the 16s again next year.

BRAYDEN JOHNSTON: Taking a step back from rep cricket this year Brayden found a home in the middle order for us this year contributing 112 runs, combined with 2 wickets and 4 catches. His highlight moment was his classy 50 against St Pats. It should be an even bigger year in the 16s again next year

TYLER CUSSON: Scored plenty of runs and took 18 wickets across a few different teams this year, Tyler helped out in the B2s, led the scoring for the 16s President team and scored plenty of runs and took 8 wickets in our 16s team. But it was his 116 off about 60 balls against St Pats that was the highlight

COREY MOORS: An absolute stand out for us, Corey did a bit of everything this year, he scored 720 runs across Green Shield, 15 reps, Dragons B2s and 16s cricket this year combined with 25 wickets, 12 catches and 4 Run Outs. An extremely talented cricketer, I look forward to seeing what he can do in Junior and senior cricket again next year

JOSH SHEEHY: A solid year of cricket for Josh as co-captain of this team, playing Under 15 representative cricket as well as B2s and 16s for the dragons he scored over 260 runs along with 10 wicket keeper dismissals, next year should be another productive year as he completes his junior career.

JAMES TOUMA: Another consistent performer for the team this year, James contributed in all forms of the game, he was our opening bowler taking 7 wickets, score some important runs for us, even opening the batting for us on a couple of occasions, and was a shining light with his athleticism in the field with 6 catches and a run out.

16C TEAM REPORT – MINOR PREMIERS & PREMIERS

Well what a great season from all the boys, they all played some very good cricket this season. We started the season well with a win against Illawong and only lost one game against Como just before the break, with that giving us the motivation we needed to go on and win the Final against them.

All the boys trained well all year and even organised their own training, at times during the week and in the holidays. There was some great batting from Steven Green scoring 674 runs with an average of 61.27 and was supported well at the other end from Jarrod Wood 293 runs. Our batting was supported by everyone scoring runs at different times when needed. The same goes for our bowling with Harry Long 32 wickets with an average of 4.56 and Ollie Kennedy 17 wickets at 4.65, everyone bowled well and got wickets at different times.

The grand final was played at Anzac 2 and it was a low scoring game with our guys winning the toss and batted first, and after our first 25 overs we where 4-54 and where bowled out for 78 runs after our second 25 overs.

Como where 5-53 after their first 25 over and we needed a big effort to win the game. Como needed 25 runs to win. Connor bowled their better batsman first ball and then Steve and Ollie just plugged away at them and we won by 9 runs.

It was a great effort from the boys and they deserved to win with all the hard work they had put in all year.

I would like to thank all of the boys in this team for the way they have played the game of cricket this year and the way they have conducted themselves both on and off the field, they are all a pleasure to coach and to be around, at times very funny, even other coaches have commented on how well they play the game. I wish them all the best for next year and I am very proud of them all.

A1 TEAM REPORT

Thrown straight into A1’s after the big premiership win in the B1’s was a bit of a rude shock but after round 1’s performance making 330 runs first innings and winning the match we thought this A1 business was too easy. Much like the St George Illawarra Dragons do every season, we prematurely won the comp in our heads after Round 1. The reality was it was our only win for the season, which made for a very long 13 rounds to end the season.

A1’s is a tough competition where every wicket needed to be earned, there was no easy teams and this is supported by the bowlers wicket tallies, Tim 10 wickets @23, Hydey 9 wickets @28, Ads 8 wickets @35, Lakey 7 wickets @28, Denty 6 wickets @50, Stew 5 wickets @55. These guys are great bowlers but it just goes to show how different the standard of batting is within top grade. It was great to see Lakey pick up a hat-trick and it was also good to see everyone was able to roll their arm over at some point this season.

A1’s was made tougher for us not having a full squad of players able to make the games, I think we managed to fill a side for four games playing games as short as 7 players. With such a tough competition this just meant we were never able to compete. But that’s life and everyone is going through different stages with work and family commitments.

With the bat this season we had Dunco constantly making great starts at the top of the order, the most consistent of all the batters he was unlucky to never kick on to make a good score. Dibby played Round 1 and made 112 not out, unfortunately that was all he could play heading up to Brisbane for work. Timmy made 120 in round 1 and 90 in Round 14 and not much in between, apart from his string of first ball ducks. Marty made a great 52 and our star number 10 Denty made numerous scores constantly embarrassing the top order.

Although the season wasn’t full of wins, it was still good to get the guys together and give it a crack. You can’t win every season and these tough seasons make the good seasons even better. Hopefully we bounce back next season.

A2 TEAM REPORT

Another fun year with a great bunch of blokes.

Our year was characterised by some very hard fought and narrow defeats with limited numbers on the park. We also were both washed out and evacuated due to fire when on the verge of certain victory.

A clear highlight was Joff’s 59, providing the perfect platform from which Spence was able to take the opening partnership to 172, his innings to 244, and his yearly total to just shy of 500 runs. Well done Joff.

Awesome contributions from all the boys. Special mentions to Deano with both bat and ball, and Bremner who took the bowling honours with 14 wickets off 1048 overs.

We welcomed Simon to the team this year. Opening with a duck at first drop and bowling something resembling spin, he quickly showed his class with the willow and some wicked swing and seam.

Mirza, another new recruit, showed unparalleled enthusiasm for the game, including one of the best appeals of all time, and running into a tree to save a run.

Great to see Bails making some quick-fire runs and to see Wado and Tubs continue their very fine careers.

In the young guard, Clams was an absolute workhorse, Crisafulli was keen-as for drinks, and Beddy was his usual, nonchalant and brilliant self.

Valuable cameos from Cam and Sydesy, members of two separate yet equally important groups of the criminal justice system.

With only one trip to the judiciary, Dave was Mr Reliable - provided he was not relied upon to show up on time, stay for the whole game, or score runs. Lucky he’s such a nice fella.

Finally, the season saw the farewell of life member Stu Slack. We sent him to the land of the long white cloud with a stylish win, and wish him all the best on his new ‘edvinture’.

Next year we will bring home the bacon.

B1 TEAM REPORT

I think we can all agree that this season was let down by lack of numbers, unfortunately, we had a lot of games where we had 9 or 10 players. However, we still gave it a red hot go each week and only just missed the finals series. Thank you to Mark Mitchell for taking over the captaincy while I was away and doing a fantastic job. Having lost 2 games at the start of the season by less than 10 runs was tough to swallow. Highlights of the season: Defending 97 on Nth Sutherland oval with Ben W taking 8 wickets. Losing 6/8 in the last game and almost losing from a seemingly unbeatable position. Being told to tone down the “decibel levels” while bowling. Standard duty umpire decisions/endless banter. Paul Dixon 5 wicket haul verse St Pats

We still entered the field each week with the same never give up attitude and I think we all enjoyed the year nonetheless and will definitely be back next season.

B2 (CD) TEAM REPORT

When the sledging ends Freshly cut grass, a soft spring breeze and an entire off season to improve internal team sledges. This season started like any one previously, the call out to players well past their prime with some new faces to add to the banter. The season began well and we looked on par for greatness, lead by the perfect tactician, yours truly. Some might say that my tactics were too perfect and that many couldn’t see the genius in them. A mid season slump and not being able to field a team of 11 grown man that could keep themselves organised to attend a park for a few hours on a Saturday, hurt our chances and we were playing catch up for the rest of the season.

There were many highlights across the season from Barnesy’s early season form, to his end of season form slump to ensure that his average was a true reflection of his talent, mediocre. I believe his one game stint for the A1s in round 6 hurt his confidence as he wasn’t able to bully his way on flat tracks to back to back tons. Luke’s deserved demotion down the order where he took to an old ball and a tiring attack for an unbeaten *111. Dazzler’s match winning performance with either the ball or bat late in the game, the guy has a knack of pulling out something in the big moments. Graz price’s horrific spell of short pitched bowling that took 2/9 off 5 balls, thank god there were 3 out on the boundary for those slog pulls. Lastly to Wisey taking the reins of captaincy for the final game in which I have heard nothing but good things… I believe the ton of negative shit slinging was conducted on a closed messenger group.

I want to thank all the boys that turned out and played this year it was another fantastic season of stupidity and drinking up the pub post game.

THE PLAYERS: Brett ‘Hubs’ Adams – Hubs joined us this year and do to his work commitments wasn’t able to play much. When he did play he was often put up the order much to his disappointment. He did play himself into a couple of good innings throughout the season and while attempting to relive his glory days.

Dale ‘Scotty’ Armstrong – Dale was talked into playing this year by his kiwi bro Scotty, however he soon discovered that he couldn’t keep playing throughout the season due to family commitments. It was from this that he was often filled in by Scotty an ex grade player that Barnesy knew who was stupid enough to turn up on weekends to spend 4 hours in the heat with us.

Matthew ‘Chucky’ Barnes – With an amazing 3 tons in the first 4 games, Chucky seemed destined to achieve greatness. Having not received as many low full tossers as last year Barnesy had nothing to fear but his form…and playing a leg glance.

Nathan ‘Baz’ Barry – Baz was a rather handy keeper that could always be trusted behind the stumps because you couldn’t really put him anywhere else. Having not applied himself with the bat it wasn’t until half way through the year that Baz started to care and was pushed up the order and when starting to look good was run out by a lazy Barnesy asleep on his bat. Baz’s season ended earlier than planned when a dangerous Carlos slow medium pacer clipped the top of off and collected Baz in the cheek.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 79

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 80

Carlos ‘Carlitos’ Batlyn – Carlos was again a great contributor to the team from his handy runs to good tight left armers around the wicket Carlos could be relied on to stir up and annoy the shit out of Luke which was always a welcome addition. With some get stops at cover Carlos was never far away from the action and always livened up the morale with a well placed Dragons Roar.

Darren ‘Daz’ Chapman – Dazzler played some fantastic knocks and had 2 handy spells with the ball. Some of the best lower order hitting that I was privileged enough to be down the other end of. With his fast paced nude balls and his often seen harbour bridge fielding to ensure that he didn’t have to chase the ball, Daz was an integral part of the team.

Andrew ‘Chipotle’ Cortes – Chipotle didn’t get the game time like he had in previous years, this was due to work commitments and a new found love of Friday night curry. Highlights include a fantastic first ball of the season wicket and his knack of deep square leg judgement, having run in twice for a catch only to see the ball sail over his head to the tune of “oh no not again”.

Mitchell ‘No Bal’” Davis – having living the high life of fly in fly out work Mitch only graced the field for a few rounds this season. For me one of the best power hitters in the game that was evident in round 2 when he took to a 17 year old leggie and scored 41 off about 19 deliveries. What was even better to see was that same 17 year old then take to Mitch’s own leggies and go for 31 off 2 overs.

Grant ‘Granty’ Ebdon – Granty could always be relied on in the field with some spectacular stops and for always dirtying his whites. Whether it be a simple stop to picking up a blocked ball, Grant could always show his expertise by sliding in on 2 knees just to make sure his misses had something to wash on Sunday. Also his political and personal views on minorities’ life choices after the game having a few drinks could always liven up the team.

Brett ‘Bretto’ Graham – First year for Bretto in the team, it started with Bretto downplaying his ability to a mostly “backyard player” however as the season went he showed he could play quite well with some superb cover drives and some handy top of off outswingers.

Kevin ‘Heavy Bal’” Isaac – known as the heavy ball specialist of the shire Kevy was a handy player with the ball but unfortunately an inflated sense of batting ability didn’t see Kevy with too many runs on the board. Having a handy set of catching mitts Kevy did well in the slips all year given that he pulled his calf early in the year and couldn’t chase a ball. His skills weren’t evident at Taren Point when he dropped 2 catches in 3 balls at point from a rather pissed Carlitos.

Dane ‘flash’ Logan – Flash played an integral part in the core of the team’s golfing contingent, shame his form didn’t play over into cricket with some low scores up the order however looked in form for a huge ton at Alfords point against the other Dragons team and their tactic of using 14 year old spinners on a flat track until the rain set in. highlights were Flash displaying a lack of effort in chasing any ball that pierced the field.

Graham “Graz” Price – Originally only in the team to keep his life membership to the club ticking over Graz was conscripted to more games this season than what he has played in the previous 3 seasons. Having started the year with the bat terribly he was restricted to late innings bowling and having fouled not only the other team but also his captain with a sensational 5 balls to finish the innings that took 2 wickets for the deep square leg fielder. Having discovered that he was almost blind and required glasses Graz started wearing them whilst batting, soon he went from 21 ball ducks to become a handy lower order worker of the ball.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 80

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 81

Andrew ‘Reggie’ Regan – Reggie didn’t play too much this season however when batting his form was true…often given out LBW. His theories of umpires biased against left handed batsmen seemed to ring true to only him.

Luke ‘get with me’ Richards – having been the star of the team over recent years, the efforts of being a dad to triplets could be seen early with a loss in pace. Only wanting to play a bit part in the team by batting at 3 and bowling first drop, Luke had some rather memorable innings. From not bowling a ball inside the batsmen’s half to getting out cheaply up the order it wasn’t until a spack at the captain about his superior ability that saw him demoted down the order to 8 in which against a tired attack that he plundered his way to 111 not out. Having been disgraced, the captain could only put him back up the order for Luke to then score a season total of 142 runs.

Scott ‘Scotty’ Trenberth – having been tricked into playing again this season Scotty was hesitant in getting in close given the scars still on his hands from the broken fingers from last time he played. Having not been given enough opportunity with the ball he was placed in the middle order and could often been seen getting out cheaply. He was however a good sport with all the Kiwi bashing and allowed the boys to come back to his man cave for the end of season festivities.

Andrew ‘Wisey’ Wise – Wisey being an avid lover of cricket his skill was somewhat lacking. Always keen in the field Wisey showed particular fondness for awkward sledges. He finally showed his mettle with the blade when facing spinners so he could close his eyes and swing from the hip.

Yours truly, ‘the Captain’ – Having been said to believe he was a better talent than he is, he could be seen almost always taking the new ball and batting at 11. Having played arguably the greatest Captain’s knock at Alfords Point, whilst covering for Daz as his runner, I believe I truly got the team over the line with my score updates and calm cooling advice, not the 60 odd runs that Daz and Graz put on for the last wicket. While consistently taking wickets for the team throughout the year a sect inside the team believed that he was unfairly bowling himself too much and to that all I can say is I didn’t go 4 games without a wicket Luke.

Thanks to all the players for the memories over this season and for the seasons over the past decade, I have been truly blessed to play amongst an absolute champion team of blokes. It seems that the team is destined to be broken up with players going their separate ways with lives down the south coast and wifely distractions that kept them away this year. I can’t think of a better way to spend my Saturdays then abusing the crap out of each other (Mitch I talking about you), struggling to walk and getting cramps while sitting at the pub watching the Saturday night football.

Cheers boys and thanks to the Club that has allowed us to play and come back year after year.

Another great season with the boys.

To Dave, Ryno, Harry, Rhonda, Westie, Dougie, Luke, Tyler, Moorsy, Tin man, Charlie, TG, Corey, Anu, Jrn Sheehy, Senior Sheehy, Mappy ( neddy)well done to a great season.

Again the team was filled up with fathers and sons and as well as some old but young boys who played some good cricket threw out the comp. it was nice to see the young boys step up and have a real crack and it wasn’t too often the older fellows had to do much to bring the team home.

Big thanks for all the support while I was away (Dougie & Johnny) it is a great team effort and it takes a team to win a comp.

All the best John

B3 TEAM REPORT – PREMIERS

As the new season commenced we saw a combining of a couple of teams with a few younger players joining the team, which gave plenty of encouragement for a promising season. The season started slowly and following the completion of the entire first round we were at the bottom of the table. This was mainly due to a lack in player numbers as a couple of the games we had 9 players and conceded a forfeit. With 1 win in 6 games the season appeared to be all but over and semi finals were a long way away.

The second round started and we finally started to provide a full team consistently each week. A couple of good wins just before the Xmas break and we managed to get ourselves off the bottom of the table but still a long way away from the semi-finals. After the Xmas break we continued to build some momentum and with the assistance of duty and an important win we again started to slowly creep up the table. A draw due to a bushfire had the potential to end the season as the semi’s appeared to be getting out of reach. In a vitally important game playing against the team coming second, winning the toss and batting with 9 players we were 3-17. We then saw the turning point and a couple of crucial partnerships and some good scores we managed to get to around 250. With a full team the second week we defended the score and a win then gave us some hope with 1 game remaining. Last game came and in an extremely strong game we managed to win outright and thus ensuring we finish 2ndon quotient by an extremely skinny margin.

Semi Final came and with rain on the 2nd day a win resulted in a place in the final. The final came and it would be comfortable to say we saved our best for last. In a comprehensive display we bowled an extremely strong batting team out for 84 (our best bowling performance all season) and a win seemed likely although work still needed to be done. The top order batsman did the job and we passed their score 1 down early on the 2nd day.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 85

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 86

A terrific performance resulting in a terrific win to a season that overall started slowly but certainly finishing with a bang.

In the end being unbeaten from Round 8 through to the Final which included 9 games. Even the 2 draws we were probably placed better than the opposition to win the game.

It was an all round team performance during the year with all players sharing with some valuable contributions. Key performances highlights include –

Round 1 Tim 63

Round 2 Steve & Josh B with 61 and 59 respectively and sharing in an important 116 run 6th wicket partnership. Matt B doing the job with the ball with 4/39 with Josh Kennedy finishing with 3/22.

Round 3 Tim 5/45

Round 8 Brayden 72 in a terrific innings from a total of 140

Round 9 a memorable 217 opening run partnership between Josh Kedwell 153 and Brayden finishing with 127 n.o. This helped us achieve our highest score for the year of 5/431 from 40 overs. Rithik pick of the bowlers with 3/14.

Round 13 Steve and Brayden 101 4th wicket partnership Brayden 65 and Steve 51. This was followed by a super innings under pressure from Josh B with 92 and put on an invaluable partnership of 86 with Ben 13. Rithik finished with 4/52 and Josh B with 3/17.

Round 14 Matt B 92 and Josh Kedwell 66. Matt following up his batting with 5/28 and 2/45, Tim B also contributing with 4/27 in the 2nd innings.

Final Brayden 1/10 off 10 and 24n.o, Matt 1/3 off 6 and 13n.o and a superb Man of the Match performance by Josh Kedwell with 47 and 4/29. All resulted in an emphatic win in the final and we were then able to celebrate a very successful season.

A super season with an excellent finish especially considering being last after round 7.

B5 TEAM REPORT

The B5’s were a new side this year put together with a mixture of youth and experience. What started off with such promise with a score of 500 plus in round one to being rolled for less than 90 the next game. A good season from a side put together at the last minute with a few younger guys stepping up from juniors to seniors and a few older heads returning to the game after a couple of seasons off. We sat comfortably in 2nd for most of the season until the Christmas curse hit after the break. Only managing to field 11 once after Christmas was unfortunately the only game we won in the new year as we finished up in 4th place. An enjoyable year with even better blokes. A few special mentions to Pat Delaney for his first 100 and 6/44. Kevin for his 13 wickets at an impressive average of 8.5. Brett for his 380 runs and Riley for just turning up. See you next season lads!

PERPETUAL TROPHIES AND WARDS CRITERIA (Amended 2017-2018)

The Management Committee reserves the right to withhold the allocation of any award where in its assessment the criteria have not been met or for any other valid reason.

Where the assessment of the award calls for nominations all such nominations must be in writing, with reasons in support. Nominations must be forwarded to be in the hands of the Secretary or Assistant Secretary by no later than two weeks after the date of the final last played or any other such date as the Committee may announce or publish.

In the absence of nominations the Management Committee shall consider the merits of each award and may determine a recipient on its knowledge of the available candidates.

The Management Committee may make any special award it sees fit to acknowledge exceptional circumstances or to provide encouragement. The Management Committee may also adjust criteria’s from season to season to reflect changed conditions of play.

All considerations of the Management Committee and/or the Executive are confidential. Neither body shall be required to give reasons for the acceptance or rejection of any nomination.

GENERAL CRITERIA To provide a measure of objectivity and consistency throughout all levels of the Club for the determination of performance awards, the following criteria shall apply uniformly. Where a bowler is competing with a batsman and/or wicket keeper for a Club honour, the following system shall apply –

For each 10 runs scored – 1 point For each wicket taken – 1.3 point For each catch/stumping made – 1 point

Where two batsmen or two bowlers are vying for an honour/award the Management Committee will take into account the ratio of runs to innings, and/or wickets to overs noting the strike and economy rates and in each instance make judgment based on its assessment of all circumstances. The above may also be used for determining “All-rounders” but with respect to the junior, intermediate and senior divisions it is to be read in conjunction with the criteria specified.

INDIVIDUAL TEAM AWARDS (Personal Trophies)

Junior and Intermediate Divisions For all junior and intermediate teams engaged in SSJCA competition cricket there will be four awards presented. The awards are - one for batting and one for bowling plus two others to be nominated by the Team Management (Coach and Manager). The Coach and Manager may recommend two awards from the following four categories – Most Improved Player, Most Consistent Player, Team Player and Best Fielder. For Batting and Bowling the award will be based on the highest aggregates achieved in their graded team and derived from the official Scorebooks. Aggregates include both innings, but exclude finals. In the case of more than one player sharing the highest aggregate the player with the highest average will be awarded the trophy. In the instance of a player winning both the batting and the bowling award the “General Criteria” will apply to determine which award (Batting or Bowling) is presented. The other award (Batting or Bowling) will be presented to the player with the second highest aggregate. No one person may win more than one of the above awards.

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 89

ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 90
