KATIE HAMLIN ASHLEY JOSLIN TAEGAN HINSLEY DOMINIC & JOSHUA HILLMAN JASHWAWN HOWARD CHARLIE GUNN

Some signs of our commitment to children are very obvious. Take, for example, the $400 million 1 Expansion Facility taking shape on the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children campus just north of our main building. Or the announcement that last year Children’s was listed for the first time among US News & World Report’s top 30 pediatric facilities nationwide.

For other signs, you may have to search a little harder --- or you may not even see them at all. Construction of our newSOME facility provided a unique opportunity for Children’s and our construction partners to recognize young patients. Patient names were stenciled onto the support beams of the building, and a special celebration was held so families could gather to see their child’s name. All the names will eventually be covered by further construction. Because they are permanently etched into the heart of the building, we are reminded that children are the center of everything we do here at Children’s. SIGNS

We treat each child we serve as if that child were our own. Each patient does, indeed, become a “Child of Children’s.” We invite you to celebrate these children with us as you learn more about their stories and our achievements over the past year. MESSAGE Dear Friends, If you had asked me a year ago if it were possible for 2010 to be a better year than 2009, I would have FROM OUR CEO quickly said, “No way!” But I would have been very wrong: 2010 was undoubtedly the best year ever for Children’s in many ways.

From a financial performance perspective, we achieved a far-better-than-expected Medicaid resolution that positively impacted our year-end results. We operated on budget, and our investment returns and philanthropy results continued to rebound. We had very good annual credit reviews with Moody’s and S & P in New York --- reviews that were critical to our financial security and flexibility.

Our Joint Commission survey was successful, resulting in our certification for another three years. We established and awarded three new academic chairs in honor of longtime Trustees Bev Head, Ann McMillan and Phillip McWane. And we recruited Deb Wesley as our new chief nursing executive.

2 Five of our service lines were recognized in the US News & World Report annual review of the nation’s top children’s hospitals, and we are proud to feature these recognitions in this Report.

The year, of course, was punctuated by the dramatic rise of the new Hospital facility, which was reaching the eleventh of twelve floors of construction when this Report went to press. The project is under budget and still on track for a grand opening in the fall of 2012.

We look back on 2010 with a great deal of satisfaction and enter this new year with great momentum, looking forward to our 100th anniversary celebration in the spring. Thank you for your support.

Very truly yours,

Wm. Michael Warren, Jr. Chief Executive Officer Children’s Hospital of There were a number of highlights in the year just past. Many organizations, events and individuals continued to support the mission of Children’s Hospital, including the Regions Charity Classic Golf Tournament. In the photo at the left, University of Alabama Basketball Coach Anthony Grant gives a young patient some putting pointers as former UA quarterback Jay Barker looks on. Children’s also welcomed a new nursing leader, Deb Wesley, who is shown greeting some of her nurses. And we took to the skies for an aerial photograph to illustrate the dramatic progress made on the Children’s Expansion Facility during 2010.

But last year and throughout the past century children --- like the tiny baby who needed the services of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit --- are always our very top priority. You’ll see their photos throughout this Report.

On the next page, we’ll take a look at Neonatology, the first of the five services that garnered national recognition via the US News & World Report listing. With all of these leading services, we also will share a “Child of Children’s” story. We think that’s only fitting because awards are meaningless if they do not translate into better care for Alabama’s children.

HIGHLIGHTS3 Neonatology Physicians in the Division of Neonatology provide comprehensive care for all neonatal illnesses using “To be a ranked nationally requires research, superior clinical expertise, the most complete and up-to-date techniques to treat pre-term and term neonates with all medical excellent nursing ratios, state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive subspecialty support. "We were excited that five of our programs were ranked among the nation's best, particularly since 2010 was our first year to participate in the survey. More importantly, we were delighted to tell the Children's Hospital story at a national level. The submission and rankings could not have been achieved without the strong relationship with UAB, our academic medical partner. The affiliation between Children's and UAB results in excellent benefits for the children and families of Alabama." ~Mike Warren~ CEO, Children’s Hospital If it wasn’t for the bandage on her head, you would never suspect that Taegan Hinsley of Boaz has been fighting for her life for much of her 8 years. She was born at 24 weeks and, at her TAEGANlowest, weighed just under 12 ounces. HINSLEY She suffered from a number of life- threatening complications of prematurity, including brain bleeds and NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis), a condition where the intestines become infected and can begin to die.

Today, Taegan is coping with cerebral palsy, seizures and hydrocephalus. 5 But despite all that, her mother Erica describes her as, “very lively, independent, strong, determined and full of life. She is just a miracle child, and the NICU always will be special to me because God and those doctors and nurses saved my baby.”

Taegan is shown here with one of her NICU nurses, Rejahn Rogers, CRNP. Pictured at the upper right is Taegan’s paternal grandmother, Nadine Eldridge, who has worked at Children’s for 29 years --- the last 17 as a Unit Clerk in the NICU. Nephrology

Our community continued to express its support for our mission through a variety of giving avenues, including gifts to our capital fund, sponsorship of fundraising events, our new Family Friends program and our statewide Children’s Miracle Network program --- all supported by thousands of parents, children, employees, physicians and leaders throughout the community. 2010 LEAD GIFTS

Children’s Hospital Expansion Facility, Early January, 2010 WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES

“In 2009, much of the progress on our project was below ground and not visible. I had someone ask me if I had gotten the construction plans upside down. (I think he was kidding.) The opposite of that happened in 2010 as we 17 completed more than 11 stories. Completion, dedication and start-up of the Central Energy Plant also occurred in December, setting the stage for heating and cooling the building. The structural supports for bridges to the main Hospital, as well as the UAB Women & Infants Center, also were completed. We look forward to topping out in March and completing the exterior of the building in 2011.”

The months since that morning in September 2010 when her 8-year-old son woke up unable to see have been difficult ones for Montgomery resident Wilhamenia Eaton. She took Charlie to their local pediatrician where a CAT scan was performed. Then it was on to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and a frightening diagnosis: Charlie’s vision problems were being caused by a craniopharyngioma ---a brain tumor. Surgery followed and Charlie spent 42 days at Children’s. Now that he’s home, Mrs. Eaton says she finds her own strength in that of Charlie and her three other sons. “He’s a strong little boy,“ she says. Ashley Joslin of upstate New York was born with a birth defect that left her with a badly deformed left hip and leg and fused fingers on her left hand. But that didn’t stop her from pursuing any of her dreams. Helping her along the way were her doctors at Children’s Hospital, which her parents carefully chose ASHLEYas “the best” for their only child. Soon, Ashley will return to Birmingham to beginJOSL her medical residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at UAB’s Spain Rehab Center. “Children’s doctors helped me so much with my life,” Ashley says. “They are absolutely the main reason why I chose this type of medicine.” “I believe we have earned a regional reputation based greatly on the breadth and volume of the services we provide. We are a busy, pretty much full-service orthopedics center dealing with everything from tumors to fracture repair to birth defects and everything in between. Surveys like that of US News & World Report also look at a facility’s commitment to quality assurance, and we do a good job in that area by our systematic review and periodic assessment of virtually everything we do. Our clinical outcomes support our attention to quality assurance.” ~J. Scott Doyle, MD~ Chief of Orthopedics

Gutierrez, MD~ Interim Director, Division of Pulmonary Medicine Director, UAB CF Center Director, Medical Quality, Children's Hospital When 19-year-old Dominic Hillman (far right) was just 7 years old, his parents, Eddie and Michelle, made the decision to move to Prattville from Hattiesburg, Mississippi so their oldest child could be closer to Children’s Hospital of Alabama in 27 Birmingham. Dominic needed specialized care for treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF), an inherited disease that attacks the lungs and digestive system and may result in early death. “The Cystic Fibrosis Center at Children’s is one of the top clinics in the nation, and after only one visit they gave us great hope for a long and healthy life for Dominic,” Mr. Hillman says. The decision to move proved to be a wise one when Joshua was born four years later. He, too, suffers from CF and almost died last year due to complications of the disease. “Children’s always has provided world-class care for our DOMINICchildren,” says Mr. Hillman. & JOSHUA Board Officers Executive Officers Chair Distinctions LEADERSHIP Raymond J.
