Music Statement of Aims: The aim of the KS5 Curriculum is to develop… • Successful Learners

Students engage actively in the process of music study. They recognise the interdependence of musical knowledge, understanding and skills and make links between the integrated activities of performing, composing and appraising underpinned by attentive listening. They broaden musical experience and interests, develop imagination and foster creativity. They appraise contrasting genres, styles and traditions, and develop understanding of musical contexts and a coherent awareness of musical chronology. They develop as effective, independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.

• Confident, inspired individuals

Students develop performing skills to demonstrate an understanding of musical elements, style, sense of continuity, interpretation and expression. They develop knowledge and understanding of a variety of instruments and styles, and of relevant approaches to performing. They reflect critically and make personal judgements on the music of others. Students have a wide range of opportunities to develop skills in public performance, including showcase evenings, end of year musicals, presentation evenings, CAMEO and Open Evening. Students develop composing skills to demonstrate the manipulation of musical ideas and the use of musical devices and conventions. They develop knowledge and understanding of a variety of instruments and styles, and of relevant approaches to composing. They develop awareness of music technologies and their use in the creation and presentation of music. They reflect critically and make personal judgements on their own music.

Students develop many transferable soft skills during the course such as dedication, perseverance, determination, perfecting and working towards an end goal. Students engage with and appreciate the diverse heritage of music, in order to promote personal, social, intellectual and cultural development. They take part responsibility for their own learning, working on their performances at home and in peripatetic lessons. They learn the skill of practising to accomplish perfection. They use their free lessons to work on performances and compositions in school, ensuring they meet required deadlines.
