But it also will do much more than that. It will open a door to a hidden world of physics, where scientists hope to find unimagined wonders that will make relativity and quantum mechanics seem like Tinker Toys.” —Ronald Kotulak, Chicago Tribune (San Francisco, CA)—Physicists at Fermilab, the world’s most powerful particle accelerator laboratory, are closing in on one of the universe’s best-kept secrets, the Holy Grail of physics: why everything has mass. With the Tevatron, an underground particle accelerator buried deep beneath the Illinois prairie, Fermilab scientists smash matter together, accelerating protons and antiprotons in a four-mile-long ring at nearly the speed of light, to find a particle—the Higgs boson—whose existence was theorized nearly 40 years ago by Scottish scientist Peter Higgs. The physicists searching for the Higgs boson are excited; they may be approaching the discovery of a lifetime, and there’s almost certainly a Nobel Prize for whoever finally finds it.

  • Music: Music and Me (Part 1) Hi Everyone! We Are Going to Be Exploring Our Identity Through Music
Music: Music and Me (Part 1) Hi everyone! We are going to be exploring our identity through music. Our identity is made up of all the different things that make us who we are. Each one of us is completely unique with our own experiences, feelings, family background and dreams. Music is a brilliant way of exploring and expressing our identity. It gives up confidence, power and purpose. Our gender is also a really important part of our identity. For different reasons, there haven’t been enough women working in the music industry. This is completely unjust, and meant that many women weren’t given a fair chance. People all around the world have been working really hard to change this, and we’re starting to see the results. We are going to look at 4 talented female musicians who are exploring their own musical and cultural identity. You will hear how they got to where they are, and see how you can do the same. You can be part of the change. How exciting! We will invite you to try out some different ways of making your own music and to explore some of the most inspirational and influential women in music from the last 100 years. Now don’t worry if you’ve never created your own music before; just enjoy the experience, and have fun! For today’s music lesson, let’s meet the 4 artists. When you listen to each song, write down your personal answers to the following questions (the more detailed your answers, the better): 1.

This Arrangement Has Been Published with the Authorization of the Ella Fitzgerald Estate. PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA ella fitzgerald series sweet georgia brown (1966) Ella Fitzgerald Biography: Truly the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald was one of the greatest singers in American history. As her official website perfectly states, “Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate, and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz, and imitate every instrument in an orchestra.” She enthralled audiences all over the world for decades, worked with everyone from Duke, Dizzy, and Count Basie to Nat King Cole and Sinatra, and left a recorded legacy that is second to none. Born Ella Jane Fitzgerald on April 25, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, Ella endured some rough times as a child. Following the split of her parents, she moved with her mother to Yonkers, NY, and sadly lost her mother at age 15. Fighting poverty, Ella eventually used these difficult times as motiva- tion in life, and continued to harbor dreams of being an entertainer. She made her public singing debut at the Apollo Theater in Harlem on November 21, 1934 at age 17.

  • The Aesthetics of Hate Music
The Aesthetics of Hate Music By Keith Kahn-Harris Introduction The expression of hatred in music is, for many people, something intrinsically worrisome. From Nazi skinhead music to homophobic reggae, hate music seems to demand close watching at least and direct censorship at most. This is perfectly understandable given contemporary concerns about hate speech and in many ways the desire not to let hate-filled music pass without comment is a laudable one. However, I want to argue that the terms of the debate about hate and music are all too frequently rooted in certain, very questionable, ideas about musical aesthetics and that as a consequence some of the complexities surrounding issues regarding hatred and music tend to be ignored. In particular I wish to question the tacit assumption behind much writing on music and hate that it is a prioria problem. That is, that hatred and music simply do not go together and when they do come together the consequences can only be worrying. In fact, this assumption is historically specific and open to question and contestation, with important consequences for our understanding of music and hate The legitimacy of hatred In western societies at least, the development in the nineteenth century of a particular musical aesthetic has had far-reaching consequences (Chanan 1994). That is, the resurrection of the Platonic idea that music should ideally represent a form of transcendental perfection. In an impure world of lust, conflict and hatred, music should ideally represent the world as it ought to be, a world that is whole, perfect, free of messy bodily imperfections and antagonism.

Dorothy Heyward papers, ca. 1850-1976 (bulk 1918-1961) SCHS 180.00 Creator: Heyward, Dorothy, 1890-1961. Description: 18 linear ft. Biographical/Historical note: Playwright and novelist. The daughter of Herman Luyties Kuhns (b. 1855) and Dora Virginia Hartzell, Dorothy Hartzell Kuhns was born in Wooster, Ohio. Dorothy studied playwrighting at Harvard University, and as a fellow of George Pierce Baker's Workshop 47 she spent a summer's residency at the MacDowell Colony, an artists' retreat in New Hampshire, where she met South Carolina author DuBose Heyward (1885-1940). They married in September 1923. Their only child was Jenifer DuBose Heyward (later Mrs. Jenifer Wood, 1930-1984), who became a ballet dancer and made her home in New York, N.Y. Dorothy collaborated with her husband to produce a dramatic version of his novel "Porgy." The play became the libretto for the opera "Porgy & Bess" (first produced in 1935) by DuBose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin. She also collaborated with her husband to produce "Mamba's Daughters," a play based on DuBose Heyward's novel by the same name. In 1940 Dorothy Heyward succeeded her late husband as the resident dramatist at the Dock Street Theater (Charleston, S.C.). In the years following his death she continued to write and published a number of works including the plays "South Pacific" (1943) and "Set My People Free" (1948, the story of the Denmark Vesey slave insurrection), as well as the libretto for the children's opera "Babar the Elephant" (1953). Earlier works by Dorothy Heyward include the plays "Love in a Cupboard" (1925), "Jonica" (1930), and "Cinderelative" (1930, in collaboration with Dorothy DeJagers), and the novels "Three-a-Day" (1930) and "The Pulitzer Prize Murders" (1932).
