Steers to £1130 Heifers to £1100

Nothing wrong with the store trade here at Exeter on Friday and although those close to finishing sorts did reflect the flagging deadweight price all others looked a tremendous trade. Top priced steers rose to £1130 for a ‘top drawer’ red Limousin (19m) from Chris Chudley of with another quality Limousin bullock (19m) close at £1125 for Michael & David Snell of . Best Native breed steers saw Aberdeen Angus (25m) to £1100 for John Simmons of and £1065 (24m) for Chris Poad of Saltash whilst South steers (23m) drew £1075 for Michael & David Snell again. A bunch of four well turned out Charolais steers (25m) from GE Ellett & Son of eased to £1070 apiece with a solitary British Blue (18m) not far behind at £1055 for Clive Timms & Family of . Good Simmental steers (27m) from the Shervington Family of got £1055 and a pen of four well farmed Hereford bullocks (23m) saw £985 for Chris Poad again. A couple of eye catching Limousin heifers (23m) topped that section at £1100 for Phil Rogers of Noss Mayo followed by a further bunch of five Limousin bred sorts of a similar age from Phil at £1035 apiece and a trio (22m) from Chris Poad once again which fetched £1000 a life. Younger (18m) Limousin females took home £935 for a pen of seven smart types from Chris Chudley. More good Charolais bred stores from GE Ellett & Son reached £1055, this time for their trio of heifers (28m) with another three good Charolais (23m) making £1050 for John Simmons, the latter also saw a rangy Friesian heifer (35m) take home £960. A bunch of six smart British Blue heifers (18m) looked decent money at £920 apiece for Clive Timms & Family as did a single Aberdeen Angus (23m) at £895 for John Simmons.

An insufficient number met a flying trade as grass jumps from the week’s wet weather. Young cattle topped at £795 (12m) for Limousin cross steers from Leo Bradford and family of , J Smerdon & Co up from attained £735 for a pen of 6 Simental cross steers (13m), Steve Webber down from Witheridge attained £735 for a pen of Blue steers (11m) with Hereford steers from the same home reaching £630. Keith Vincent of Truro showed another run with the best blues attaining £705 (12m), whilst a run of good South Devon steers from RJ Merchant of Moretonhamstead achieved £680. Younger cattle looking a good price, with Angus steers from E Willis of reaching £610 (9m) and Limousin cross steers from IC & DJ Pincombe of hitting £590 (9m). Heifers looking well sold with top draw sorts from Rob Davis of topping at £755 with others attaining £680 (11m), Frank Stephens of Lostwithiel attained £685 for South Devon heifers (12m), whilst another run from RJ Merchant saw the best of his South Devon heifers reach £645 (13m). younger cattle wanted – don’t miss the boat! 83 CALVES – 10.15 AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935

A small entry of dairy cattle for the first sale back since the country went into lockdown which saw the best of what was forward top at £1650 for GCB Davis of Tiverton who sold others to £1640, £1520 & £1500. Fleckvieh x Jersey heifers from Oliver Hicks of sold well to a top of £1200 twice with others to £1180 & £1120. A consignment of sixteen Pedigree Holstein heifer calves from Y Farm Partnership of Shepton Mallett sold to strong demand topping at £320 x 4 with others to £300 x 4 with the whole group averaging well at £300. Organic Crossbred heifer calves sold to £220 x 6 and £180 x 4 for Brian Down of .

184 Store Lambs & Hoggs The first of the seasons store lambs, being the tidy up from a few local pre-Christmas lambing flocks were a firm trade throughout with a pleasing compliment of buyer’s ringside to see them sold. Robert & Edward Mortimer of Kennford sold a forward pen of new season stores well at £92 followed by Chris Carr of Shillingford Abbot at £81 & £77.50, Charles & Ben Mortimer of Powderham at £80 and Richard Pratt of sold his younger sorts well at £78.50 & £76. Best of the hoggs to £80 for both Richard Guppy of Liverton and Michael & David Snell of Knowstone with plenty of other healthy sizable sorts from £65 to £77 whilst smaller tail end sorts traded £40 to £50. Overall average of new season and hoggs including some new season sold with a fault was decent enough at £67.

17 Grazing Ewes Michael & David Snell topped with decent mules at £70 as well as leaner sorts at £65 and others back from there.

91 Sows A very large entry saw the trade a lot easier very much in line with other centres across the UK. Trade has dropped sharply on the “deadweight” system too and expected to slip further this week. Top call of the day was £160 given for the best from Chris Down with Tim Stockwell of at £150 and the best from Chris Hill of Wessex Pork, at £140.

103 Prime/Store Pigs A good entry met a useful trade with 3 regular buyers joined by 4 local butchers and farm shop buyers pushing the best to £132 for the best coloured pigs from C.A Kneebone of Lifton with another pen at £130. Messrs Smith of Launceston sold their white pigs well at £128 with Richard & Vicky Gibbins reaching a decent £126 for a double penful of 91kg white pigs. It was nice to see Duchy Agricultural College of Cornwall selling pigs at Exeter with their best 91kg types at £110 with Richard Knox & Family also hitting £110. Lightweights reached £82 for a penful in from Messrs Dallyn of West Buckland with the best of the store pigs hitting £42 for a pen of nice ginger pigs in from The Hon Evelyn Boscawen of Tregothnan Estate, Truro.
