EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT May 2017 Friday 5th Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 [email protected] www.kivells.com 511 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS– 10AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Alan Webber 07967 718048 Steers to £1365 Heifers to £1135 With the welcome rain of late and tightening numbers, store cattle were no less money on Friday, with another top quality entry for our Third Spring Show and Sale of Continental store’s attracting excellent results. A tremendous consignment of Simmental cross bullocks from April Hayden and William Tucker of Kingsbridge scooped both first and second prize in the show steer section with bunches to £1290 and £1265 (24m), however these were eclipsed by their grand single steer (25m) at an impressive £1365, with their twenty-eight head averaging £1210. Graham Tancock of Broadclyst brought his usual well farmed, forward sorts and attained a worthy £1270 for a pair of Charolais steers, with his solitary steer (25m) of the same breed to £1265. Whilst Clifford & Martin Squire, Coryton saw cracking Blonde steers (15m) to £1225 and a bunch of five neat Blonde females (12m) to £895. South Devon steers (26m) sold to £1210 for John Hamlin of Bickington as Limousin and Blues (23m) reached £1175 and £1170 for the Lee family of Colyton. Best Friesian type steers (21m) rose to £855 for a group of four from Tony West of South Zeal. Young ‘summering’ stores looked as dear as anything on the day with a trio of Charolais (11m) from Tom Elliott of Ashburton fetching £1060 and a pen of seven proper Simmental bullocks of a similar age to £1000 for Keg Hoskin of Christow. Store heifers sold to a high of £1135 for a couple of well grown South Devon cross (25m) from David & Mary Stark of Denbury with a smart Blue female (21m) from JW Davies & Sons of Uplowman running to £1130 and a Charolais (22m) from R & J Bowles of Broadclyst getting £1125. A striking Limousin heifer (24m) (and first prize show winner) from Brian Vallance, Bickington achieved £1100 closely followed by second placed heifers, a pair of Simmentals (25m) from Steve Smith of Colebrooke at £1095 apiece. Eye catching bunches of Angus heifers (24m) again from JW Davies & Sons saw £1090 & £1070 with well bred and farmed Blue cross Limousin females (22m) hitting £1050 for Michael Hutchings of Chudleigh. THIS FRIDAY, 12th MAY *To be sold within the weekly store cattle sale* 12 Smart Purebred Simmental Bulling Heifers from Andrew Palk of Paignton – further details from the Auctioneers on 01392 251261 157 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 & Simon Alford 07789 980203 Steers to £920 Heifers to £685 Another excellent show of stirks and suckled calves met a strong trade throughout with a fantastic consignment from J Chisholm & Son of Hatherleigh receiving top honours seeing the best of their Limousin cross steers (11m) hitting £920, a further two pens of younger sorts (10m) attained £870, a bunch of four smart Limousins reached £840 and a pair from the same home again attained £770. Further Limousin crosses (9m) from Peter Heard of Okehampton levelled out at £800 apiece, David & Justine Colton of Princetown realised £765 for their Limousin steers (8m), Blonde crosses from Markwell Farm Partnership from Landrake hit £750 and further good steers from J Chisholm & Son saw British Shorthorn crosses attain the same figure. Simmental crosses (11m) from Richard Beckley of Blackdog reached £735 as did Steve Arrowsmith- Brown of Postbridge, this time for South Devons. A smaller show of heifers saw the best attain £685 for Limousin crosses from Peter Heard, with a second pen of similar goods attaining £640. David & Justine Colton saw Angus heifers (11m) achieve £670, South Devon heifers (12m) from Steve Arrowsmith-Brown reached £635, whilst a pair of smart Limousin crosses from Michael & Janet Folland of Roborough, Winkleigh attained £620. Simmental heifers from Richard Beckley attained £615, whilst Michael Turner of East Allington realised £600, again for Simmental heifers. Young British Blue CALVES Bulls Heifers bulls to £390 & £330 for Messrs CD & EM Gooding of Ottery St Mary with others to £385 for Martin & Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE Liz Bennett, £355 for Olly Rose of Dulverton, £348 British Blue 10 390 333 for Chris & Connie Creeper of Axminster and £328 Limousin 3 380 295 4 352 241 & £320 for Paul Hendy of Kingsbridge. Young Simmental Holstein / Friesian 11 140 62 heifers sold well to £332 for Martin & Liz Bennet Ayrshire 1 15 15 who also sold a British Blue at £332, a Limousin at Brown Swiss 10 102 59 £282 & Charolais at £280! Other Blue heifers to £325 & £320 for Olly Rose, £322 for Messrs CD & EM Gooding and £300 & £290 for Chris & Connie Creeper. A cracking 8 day old Hereford heifer from James Baker of Aylesbeare was a flying trade at £320 purchased by a gentleman to be his companion! Other smart young Herefords to £245 for Richard, June & Anthony Barton of Cullompton. Friesains sold well with some smart young British Friesians to £140 & £100 for Nick Heard of Thorverton. Brown Swiss bulls to £102 & £100 for Mr FJ Luxmore of Tiverton with others to £88 (x2) for Olly Rose. MONTHLY SALE OF 10 BREEDING CATTLE – 12.30PM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 A small entry of Pedigree Blonde In Calf Cows from DR RR Woods of Cornwood sold well to a top of £1160 for a 2015 born Cow which was two months in-calf. Others sold to £1110 (x2) for 2012 born cows six months in-calf to the Angus. An in-calf Devon cross cow to £710 for Richard Baxter of Exwick. 240 PIGS – 10AM Auctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133 79 CULL SOWS & BOARS Another excellent entry saw a drop in the trade following the recent flying trade at Exeter. That said, we were still a long way in front of other markets and ‘deadweight’ prices in the UK with an overall top call of £214 from Chris Down of Budleigh with Colin Gibbins of Honiton close up with the best of his line-up of six coloured sows at £210. Richard Dunning of Drewsteignton did well with his consignment topping at £186 and the best from Timmy Stockwell of Kingsbridge at £176. Today’s top ten averaged £202.31 with four buyers competing well throughout the sale. 101 PRIME PIGS Superb trade! The first quality prime pigs saw an uplift of between £10-£15 from our last sale with Nigel & Sandra Tope of Totnes at £134 (x8) with Messrs Glynn of Callington at £132 and Andrew Freemantle of Exeter at 3130 (x4). Messrs Turner of Ilfracombe saw a remarkable trade for their quality medium weights (86kg) hitting £120, £118 & £116. Messrs Rowe of Liverton sold a smart line up of ‘porkers’ topping at £130 with others at £104, and as usual Richard & Vicky Gibbins of Poltimore saw plenty of interest with their best at £110. Today’s top twenty prime pigs averaged £119.33 with more needed to satisfy buyers’ orders. 60 PRIME PIGS A good entry of stores saw the day topped by a sow with ten piglets reaching £270 on behalf of Derek Speake of Yarcombe going home with first time buyers Messrs Rooth. Trevor Hampton of Cambourne saw his young weaners hit £58 (x6) with young ‘slips’ from Mike Ayre of Thorverton at £42. Plenty of vendors between £40-£50 with generally more interest overall. *Our next sale is Friday 19th May – Entries to James Morrish 07814 010133 or Exeter Office on 01392 251261* 952 SHEEP – 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 19 ORPHAN LAMBS The 19 orphan lambs met much demand and sold to £26 (x2) & £24 (x5) for Adrain & Julie Rich of Halwell and £21 (x2) for Graham Kivell of Ashreigney to average £18.78 overall. 131 STORE HOGGS & LAMBS Store hogg numbers are really drying up, as is the quality. The best today sold to £64 for both PV Jones of Bridford and the Pearse family of North Bovey as IW Leonard of Yeoford claimed £56.50 and a pen of Scotch tups and wethers from Malcolm Osborne of North Bovey claimed £44.50. First of the season’s store lambs sold well and to £70.50, £66 & £58.50 for Ben & Charles Mortimer of Powderham. 29 GRAZING EWES A handful of grazers sold to £70 for both R & J Legg & Son of Bridport and Messrs Hatherley & Rendle of Tamerton Foliot and £67 for a LLanwenog ram from PV Jones of Bridford.
