9. Princeton in Beijing (PiB) a. Matthew Walak, Summer 2019 Final Report I originally planned to keep a blog, but I quickly discovered PiB left me with neither the time nor the energy to maintain a weekly blog. As a result, here’s my final report: A lot happens at Princeton in Beijing in a very short amount of time. I could not fully process my experience until I returned home and had time to think about it for a few days. From the perspective of a second-year Chinese student, my entire summer was essentially a non-stop Chinese class from the moment my plane touched down in Beijing to the moment I returned to Boston. In terms of workload, the weekdays were tough. Channeling my inner STEM major, here are some fun numbers: Daily class time: 4 hours 10 minutes (4 x 50 min classes + 1 x 50 min one-on-one class) Daily homework average: 3 hours 36 minutes (Monday through Friday) Total class time, homework, tests, and test preparation: 291 hours 8 minutes Total working days in China: 39 days Percentage of awake time on working days spent studying or in class: 46.7% (Assuming 8 hours of sleep, which was not always the case) Essentially, Monday through Friday, almost half of the time I was awake was spent studying or in class. We had a few weekend cultural excursions to see tourist attractions such as the Great Wall, the 2019 Beijing horticulture exhibition, and the Marco Polo Bridge. We also had the opportunity to see a Chinese opera (Which ended up being in French), and Chinese acrobatics. -

religions Article Christian Education and the Construction of Female Gentility in Modern East Asia Jeesoon Hong Department of Chinese Culture, Sogang University, Seoul 04107, Korea; [email protected] Received: 30 June 2019; Accepted: 1 August 2019; Published: 6 August 2019 Abstract: This study explores the relationship between Christian education and the construction of female gentility in East Asia around the turn of the twentieth century. Because American missionary schools played an important role in the region, notions of female gentility were greatly influenced by the cultural values of the American middle class and, more specifically, American liberal arts colleges. The notion of the “new gentlewoman” helps to illuminate modern Protestant womanhood’s ambiguous relationship with feminism and nationalism. Recognizing that the Protestant notion of “female gentility” was internally racialized, in this study, I also pay attention to the question of race. While the scope of my research spans East Asia, in this paper, I examine Christian education in China, focusing specifically on Yenching Women’s College. I compare the college’s educational goals and curricula to the pedagogy at the male college of Yenching, the governmental women’s college, and other female colleges in Japan and Korea. In this study, I approach East Asia as a whole for several reasons: first, because a broader view of the region helps put the Chinese case into perspective; second, because the region was often dealt with together in missionary work; and lastly, because national differences cannot be assumed to be more substantial than other differences, such as those based on gender, class, generation, period, and province. -

c hapter 16 MODELS OF CULTURE Mark Risjord 16.1. Introduction Th e concept of culture is one of anthropology’s most signifi cant contributions to contemporary thought. What might be now called a “classical” conception of cul- ture developed in the mid-twentieth century. It treated cultures as homogeneous and systematic entities, something shared by individuals within a given social group. Descriptions of culture were thought to be abstracted from individual ac- tions, and appeal to culture was taken as explanatory, both of patterns of action within social groups and of diff erences among groups. Th e culture concept infl u- enced philosophers of language who relied on the idea that linguistic communities have relatively clear boundaries. Philosophical work on language and meaning, in turn, infl uenced both the anthropologists who developed the classical conception and their critics. Contemporary anthropological models of culture continue to be infl uenced by, and have deep relevance for, philosophical understanding of language, thought, and human nature. While the anthropological concept of culture is little more than one hun- dred years old, there have been many ways of conceptualizing it. In a famous survey, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn ([1952] 1963 ) identifi ed 164 defi ni- tions of culture. At the risk of losing some of the texture of anthropological thought, this chapter will sort these defi nitions into a much smaller number of models. Th e earliest models treated cultures as collections of traits: a grab bag of ideas, material objects, habits, and texts. By the middle of the twentieth century, one of the dominant models came to emphasize norms, values, and beliefs as the central elements of culture, and this semiotic model is probably the notion most familiar to nonanthropologists. -

Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.
