  • The World War and the Turco-Armenian Question
THE WORLD WAR AND THE TURCO-ARMENIAN QUESTION BY AHMED RUSTEM BEY Formerly Turkish Ambassador in Washington Berne 1918 translated by Stephen Cambron PERSONAL EXPLANATION OF THE AUTHOR The son of a Pole, who having been harbored in Turkey after the Hungarian abortive Revolution of 1848, served this country as an officer and was the object of government favors till his death, I was infeoffed to the Turkish people as much out of thankfulness as because of their numerous, amiable qualities. In writing this book intended to defend turkey against the Western public opinion concerning the Turco-Armenian question, I have only given way to my grateful feelings towards the country where I was born and which made me, in my turn, the object of her benevolence. These feelings expressed themselves by acts of indubitable loyalty and there is they reason why I fought twice in duel to maintain her honor and served her as a volunteer during the Turco-Greek War. It is after having ended my career and assured a long time ago of the kind feelings of the Ottoman Government and of my Turkish fellowmen’s that I publish this work under my name. Thereby I mean to say that I am only obeying my love towards the country. As to the degree of conviction with which I put my pen to her service in this discussion, where the question is to prove that Turkey is not so guilty as report goes and in which passions are roused to the utmost is sufficiently fixed by my signing this defense in which I speak the plain truth to the Armenian committees and the Entente.

Yet like them, they proposed a religious reformation, and the influence which dominated the new conception was at the beginning at least, the influence of the Christian movement upon Asia as represented in the Roman Catholic mission in Korea.

Our Vision of the Future 144 Afterword 194 Introduction 7 In the course of its long history the Armenian people has known both high and low points and was more than once on the verge of extinction. Yet, unlike many ancient civilizations, we have managed to survive, and this fact is amazing in itself. Today, in the first half of the 21st century, we are again poised at a critical juncture and are facing choices that will have very serious consequences for our nation. We must compare possible trajectories for the nation’s future development and make choices that reflect our keen awareness of our responsibility to the generations to come.

Title: “Centers of Provocation and Progress: Anatolian Missionary Stations Within the Ottoman State and Among Apostolic Armenians, 1878-1896.” This thesis examines American missionaries in the north central Anatolian city of Marsovan, their attempts to convert Apostolic Armenians to Protestantism, the nature of their relations to the Ottoman Empire, and how the sides narrated their encounters between 1878 and 1896. The subject of missionaries in the Near and Middle East has become quite popular in recent years, as interactions between Muslims and Protestant missionaries are a useful prism for research in postcolonial studies.

  • Heterodox Tribes of Asia Minor
BT UC-NRLF 703 H37 c 2 b 7L4 763 MAIN y* 3-r "70^ 310 From: Royal Anthropological Institute. Journal. V. 51, pp. # 310-342 HETERODOX TRIBES OF ASIA MINOR. 1 the late F. W. By jHasluck. I. § 1. Introductory. Professor von Luschan, in his Huxley lecture on Early Inhabitants of Asia Minor? has done much to bring order into our ideas of the still insufficiently known ethno- logical and religions divisions of that country. His studies are based mainly on his personal observations, and his point of view is for the most part that of a physical anthropologist. His predecessors in field work, dealing generally with narrower areas, have produced a great mass of literature, scattered or in some cases difficult of access, and no serious attempt has been made to approach the problems involved from the historical side. It therefore seems worth while at this stage to bring together the scattered material of explorers and collate with it such historical information as may be gleaned from pointed sources, with the object of presenting in one view a summary of the facts at our disposal and the problems they suggest for the investigation of future explorers in the history, and particularly the religious history, of Anatolia. European travellers in Asia Minor, mainly classical archaeologists and very seldom orientalists, are generally better acquainted with Christianity than with Islam. Consequently, the divisions of the Christians are more obvious to them than those of the Mahommedan populations. By most the latter are regarded as a single whole, and any divergence they may notice from orthodox Sunni practice suggests to them that the population in question has been affected by Christianity, that is, it represents an originally Christian population half-converted to Islam.
