Name: YISHIUAN LIN Date of Degree: MAY, 2015 Title of Study: AN ASSOCIATIVE MODEL OF CODE SWITCHING: MANDARIN- TAIWANESE CODE SWITCHING IN SPOKEN MEDIA DISCOURSE IN TAIWAN Major Field: ENGLISH Abstract: This dissertation proposes an associative model of CS to analyze the phenomena of code switching (CS). Specifically, the associative model of CS is applied to speakers’ use of Taiwanese in Mandarin-dominant spoken media discourse. Gumperz’s (Blom & Gumperz, 1972; Gumperz, 1982) and Myers-Scotton’s (1993a) theoretical foundation is used as a basis for the associative model of CS. The associative model of CS emphasizes the important role of association in language switching and includes two types of language switching: code switching and utterance switching. With regard to the two types of language switching, the association Taiwanese or a Taiwanese utterance has can occur at the community, activity, and individual levels. With regard to communicative effects, the association Taiwanese or a Taiwanese utterance has at various levels is motivationally relevant to envisioning the use of Taiwanese or the Taiwanese utterance to create certain communicative effects, which in turn are realized by switching to Taiwanese or the Taiwanese utterance. The associative model of CS is examined by 50 CS cases collected in this dissertation, along with the comparison with Gumperz’s, Auer’s (1984), and Myers- Scotton’s theoretical notions, by the CS examples presented in previous CS studies in Taiwan, and by eight Taiwanese interviewees’ responses to 10 CS cases collected in this dissertation. The findings of the dissertation suggest that the associative model of CS can effectively explain various CS cases presented in this study and in previous CS studies in Taiwan as well as the interviewees’ views about CS. This dissertation contributes to the sociolinguistics field by proposing the associative model of CS and addressing the problem of applying various theories in different CS studies as well as to the CS research in Taiwan in a way that it provides another perspective in explaining speakers’ use of CS in Mandarin-dominant spoken media discourse, which has not received sufficient research attention. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter Page I. First published February 14, 2018; doi: 10.1152/jn.00498.2017.—Animals must perform spatial navigation for a range of different behaviors, including selection of trajectories toward goal locations and foraging for food sources. To serve this function, a number of different brain regions play a role in coding different dimensions of sensory input important for spatial behavior, including the entorhinal cortex, the retrosplenial cortex, the hippocampus, and the medial septum. This article will review data concerning the coding of the spatial aspects of animal behavior, including location of the animal within an environment, the speed of movement, the trajectory of movement, the direction of the head in the environment, and the position of barriers and objects both relative to the animal’s head direction (egocentric) and relative to the layout of the environment (allocentric). The mechanisms for coding these important spatial representations are not yet fully understood but could involve mechanisms including integration of self-motion information or coding of location based on the angle of sensory features in the environment.

    A Re-evaluation of Pelliot tibétain 1257: An Early Tibet- an-Chinese Glossary from Dunhuang1 James B. Apple and Shinobu A. Apple Introduction elliot tibétain 1257 (hereafter, PT1257) is an early manuscript preserved from the ancient city-state of Dunhuang kept P among the materials of the Paul Pelliot collection conserved at the Bibliothéque Nationale de France in Paris, France. Digital images of the manuscript are found at the web site of Gallica Digital Library (http://gallica.bnf.fr) and the International Dunhuang Project (http:// idp.bl.uk/; hereafter, IDP). French scholars Marcelle Lalou (1939) and R.A. Stein (1983 [English translation 2010]) have previously dis- cussed in an abbreviated manner the content and characteristics of this manuscript. A more extensive discussion of PT1257 is found among Japanese Buddhologists and specialists in Dunhuang studies. Akira Fujieda (1966), Zuihō Yamaguchi (1975), and Noriaki Haka- maya (1984) have provided initial insights into the structure and con- tent of PT1257 while the work of Ryūtoku Kimura (1985) and Kōsho Akamatsu (1988) have furnished more detailed points of analysis that have contributed to our current understanding of this manu- script. Other scholarship related to PT1257 has suggested that the manuscript was from a Chinese monastery and that it was utilized to help Chinese scholars translate Tibetan. This paper re-evaluates this presumption based upon a close analysis of the material components of the manuscript, the scribal writing, its list of Buddhist scriptures, and its vocabulary. Our assessment argues that PT1257 was a copy of a document initiated and circulated by Tibetans, presumably among Chinese monasteries in Dunhuang, to learn the Chinese equivalents to Tibetan translation terminology that was already in use among Tibet- ans.

The manuscript has been determined to be a school boy’s hand copy, complete with errors, and it reproduces not only the text (which appears in large characters), but also an early commentary (small, double-column characters).

A general at the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty, he was a prominent leader of the movement opposing the Manchu Qing Dynasty, and in recovering Taiwan from Dutch colonial occupation in 1661. Honored as a hero in Japan, China, and Taiwan, he has been dramatized in many plays in various theatre forms in Japan (since about 1700), China (since 1906), and Taiwan (since the 1920s).
