At university these students have now come into contact with a diverse group of people from different generations who think differently. We have to try and understand what is going on in the minds of a new, free generation of students. Quite honestly, I do not think we really know who this group of people is or what their frame of reference is. They experienced a whole new world from the day they were born, right through the new schooling system to a changed university landscape. It is important to get to know them and to understand what makes them tick. We are lucky that we have some of the best born-free minds in the country at Maties. We are proud that we are not just a knowledge provider, but that we also equip our students to flourish in the diverse context of our country and continent.

COMEDIANS PLAY RACE CARD: Two of South Africa’s funniest men had SU students and staff in the palm of their hands during Diversity Week. Marc Lottering (pictured above) and Siv Ngesi drew full houses when they performed in the tent on the Rooiplein on respectively Wednesday, 2 October and Thursday, 3 October. Both made jokes about the diverse people of South Africa. Lottering joked about learner drivers, snobbish sales people in expensive boutiques and hair culture. Ngesi poked fun at the way black, coloured and white people act when they get out of the water, hair (yes, he too) and the way different cultures dance.
