The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960s By Zachary Saltz University of Kansas, Copyright 2011 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Film and Media Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John Tibbetts ________________________________ Dr. Michael Baskett ________________________________ Dr. Chuck Berg Date Defended: 19 April 2011 ii The Thesis Committee for Zachary Saltz certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960s ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John Tibbetts Date approved: 19 April 2011 iii ABSTRACT The Green Sheet was a bulletin created by the Film Estimate Board of National Organizations, and featured the composite movie ratings of its ten member organizations, largely Protestant and represented by women. Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

O'NEILL VATICAN CITY - (NC) - Michelan- gelo's masterpiece, the Pieta, severely damaged by a hammer-wielding Hungarian will be restored as faithfully as possible to its original beauty but will remain forever flawed. The 6,700-pound statue carved from a single block of white Cararra marble was smashed by several hammer blows shortly before noon Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in its side chapel in St. Peter's Basilica. The statue, portraying the sorrowing Virgin holding the limp, dead body of Christ, is world famous and considered perhaps the most valued treasure of the Vatican. ACCORDING to visitors in the church at the time, a bearded man leaped over a low marble railing of the chapel, jumped on a table in front of the statue and began flailing away with a mason's hammer. In the rain of blows on the figure, of the Virgin the (continued on page 21) CHE PIETA," by Michelangelo, is shown left in 1964 as it was photographed during »e New York World's Fair. This was the fourth consecutive year of growth in the number of French films scheduled (359 in 1995, 379 in 1996, and 404 in 1997). 91 films were programmed on Telepiu, and 390 on the free TV channels. Italian TV channels also devoted a larger share of their line-up to French fare. Of the more than 12,000 movie broadcasts, French films were aired 955 times, taking out 7.8% of film slots, showing an increase of 3.4 points compared with 1997. Their share of movie airtime rose significantly on the free TV channels, up from 1.9% to 5.3%. Traditionally giving greatest exposure to French films, RAI 3 bested past records this year. With 107 titles programmed, it outstripped even Telepiu, the specialist movie channel, in which Canal Plus had recently acquired a stake. The three public broadcasters stepped up the number of French films offered in 1998, demonstrated by an increase on RAI 1 from 41 titles broadcast in 1997 to 77 in 1998, and on RAI 2, from 30 to 32 titles. Of all the commercial channels, Rete 4 had always been the most oriented to French films. This year, it broadcast 84 titles, 38 more than the previous year.
