Da wären zunächst meine Abteilungskolleginnen und -kollegen im Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB), die alle Phasen dieser Promotion und meinen Weg von der Theaterwissenschaftlerin zur Soziologin begleitet haben. Unsere Gespräche haben mich, oft buchstäblich im Vorbeigehen auf dem Flur, immer wieder sehr motiviert und inspiriert. Meinen großen Dank sende ich auch in die USA an Trevor Pinch für seine großartige Bereitschaft, meiner Prüfungskommission sehr kurzfristig beizutreten sowie für seine Unterstützung auch über die Verteidigung hinaus. Weil diese Arbeit eine ethnografische ist, danke ich außerdem meinen hier anonymisierten Gesprächspartnerinnen und -partnern im Feld für ihre Zeit und ihr Interesse. Sie haben mir in Lyon, Berlin und am Rande zahlreicher Konferenzen und Veranstaltungen geduldig Rede und Antwort gestanden, selbst wenn mein Französisch nicht perfekt oder mein Forschungsinteresse an ihrem Berufsfeld für sie eher undurchsichtig war. Ich verdanke ihnen weit mehr als Informationen und Einsichten, denn sie haben mich und meine Arbeit schon ernst genommen, als ich selbst insgeheim noch zweifelte. Natürlich erforderte auch „innovating in public“ eine Menge Promovieren in private. Meine in Mitleidenschaft gezogene Familie, meine Freundinnen und Freunde haben mein Lamento über Monate hinweg mit Zuversicht ertragen und sich sogar mit mir oder mir zuliebe für künstliche Beleuchtung begeistern lassen. Das hat gut getan. Ich möchte besonders die Unterstützung folgender Damen würdigen – in alphabetischer Reihenfolge: Eva Alter für die tröstlichen Telefonate; Etta Dannemann für den einzigen realistischen Zeitplan in vier Jahren, für die LED-Grafik in Kapitel 4 und den bereichernden Austausch über Licht; Janina Galvagni für die beste Gesellschaft während der Schreibklausur und die Wiederentdeckung des roten Fadens im Empirie-Teil; Inga Haese, weil sie es sehr viel leichter gemacht hat, das Boot zu rocken, in dem wir ja beide saßen; Katharina Krause für den großen Spaß bei der Sache auf Konferenzen und bei der Feldforschung; Simone Kurz für sommerliche Lichtblicke mit Picknick im Tiergarten und ihr Feedback; Karen Schierhorn, für die pragmatische Seelsorge und, weil sie mein Vorbild war; Julia Schweigger, für viele schöne Feierabende und dafür, dass sie so lange kritisch nachgefragt hat, bis wir beide verstanden haben, worüber ich schreibe. Zu guter Letzt bin ich meiner Familie unendlich dankbar. Meine Eltern haben es geschafft, dass ich mir für solche Unternehmungen eine fast kindliche Begeisterung und Neugier bewahrt habe. Sie haben verstanden, wenn ich zu Besuch war und doch nicht ganz da, und haben alle Höhen und Tiefen mit mir durchlebt.     Intro to Light Fixtures IN THE BEGINNING PRIMITIVE LAMPS - (c 13,000 BC to 3,000 BC) Prehistoric man, used primitive lamps to illuminate his cave.     Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station National Historic Landmark Study By Ralph Eshelman Designated August 5, 1998 Images by Ralph Eshelman, 1997 Present and Historic Physical Appearance A remarkably complete station, the Ponce de Leon Light Station consists of a 176-foot tall brick tower, a principal and two assistant keepers' dwellings, oil house, pump house, and three woodshed/privy structures. The principal buildings are arranged forming a courtyard effect, connected by brick pathways and surrounded by a white wooden picket fence. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse tower is the second tallest brick lighthouse tower in the United States; only Cape Hatteras Lighthouse being taller. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station is located on the northern side of the Ponce de Leon Inlet; bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Halifax River on the west. The property is operated by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association. General Description: [1] Existing Structures: Contributing Resource: Light Tower [2] The Ponce de Leon Inlet light tower measures approximately 176 feet from ground level to the pinnacle. The height of the tower from the bottom of the foundation below ground level to the pinnacle of the lantern roof ventilator is 188 feet, 6½ inches. The foundation consists of a 45- foot-diameter, 12-foot-deep, hexagonal brick foundation with a round-shaped concrete apron extending from the brick edge outward. Each side of the hexagonal brick foundation is 176 inches wide. The concrete apron (including the brick foundation) extends outward 120 inches from the tower in a circular pattern except around the stairway to the entrance door where the concrete apron extends further to each side in a rectangular pattern.

This is an integral part of glassmaking because if a hot glass object is allowed to cool too quickly, it will be highly strained by the time it reaches room temperature; indeed, it may break as it cools. · Annealing Crack -- A defect that occurs during the glass manufacturing process (during cooling) and generally results in a fine, hairline crack. By the early twentieth century, electricity played an ever-increasing and complex role in everyday life in western society as consumers gradually became more dependent on it as a source of energy for light, heat, and power. On the eve of the Second World War nearly 80 percent of the residential dwellings in the United States had electricity as their primary form of illumination. However, more than 20 percent continued to rely on either kerosene or gasoline lighting and almost one percent still used gas lighting. The gap between those using electric lighting in urban and rural America was much wider. According to the 1940 U.S. Census, almost all residents of urban communities and metropolitan districts had electric lighting in their homes and rural-nonfarm dwellings hovered around the national average. However, nearly two-thirds of rural farm dwellings continued to rely on kerosene or gasoline illumination. Indeed, the adoption of new technology is seldom a linear and complete process, but more and more people were accustomed to seeing and using electricity by mid- century. Feynman in Lectures in Physics, Vol. I iii ABSTRACT Reflector design stemmed from the need to shape the light emitted by candles or lamps. Over 2,000 years ago people realized that a mirror shaped as a parabola can concentrate light, and thus significantly boosts its intensity, to the point where objects can be set afire. Nowadays many applications require an accurate control of light, such as automotive headlights, streetlights, projection displays, and medical illuminators. In all cases light emitted from a light source can be shaped into a desired target distribution with a reflective surface. Design methods for systems with rotational and translational symmetry were devised in the 1930s. However, the freeform reflector shapes required to illuminate targets with no such symmetries proved to be much more challenging to design. Even when the source is assumed to be a point, the reflector shape is governed by a set of second-order partial non-linear differential equations that cannot be solved with standard numerical integration techniques. An iterative approach to solve the problem for a discrete target, known as the method of supporting ellipsoids, was recently proposed by Oliker.
