The gradual and complex transformation into stone and brick constructions – the so-called ‘petrification’ – is one of the most important processes within cities and towns. To date, however, this phenomenon has been little studied by historians and archaeologists. How these architectural transformations and their chronology took place is still a matter of conjecture. ‘Petrification’ is nonetheless a significant process: it affects the general aspect of the cities and towns, reflecting an obvious change in the landscape and the evolution in the employed building materials. From a social viewpoint, ‘petrification’ is associated with the way in which houses are interconnected and thus is a reflection of town politics as well as the relationships between neighborhoods. Thing Theory is situated in the domain of Material cultural studies and was initially developed by Bill Brown (2001)1 as a study of objects in literature. The title refers to two books of Geert van Istendael and by the act of combining both I inscribe them in Baudelaire's tradition of observing the city of Brussels ‘through objects’. This paper explores through the object of a fountain and Manneke Pis his act of watering on the city the importance of this naked urban thing. Only 58 centimeters high he owns more than a thousand of costumes. Dressed in his architect's suite he is and remains a peeing ‘Brusseleer’ on the center of Europe. Some see in his jets of water spurting an abundance of knowledge and source of wisdom that incarnates a particularly Belgian way of thinking. A ‘Don Quixote’ attacking the ‘F*heads’? The origin of the book you are holding now lies within this generous gesture. Thirty years later, when I accidently rediscovered it, I realised that the text quotes a book by Susan Sontag, translated and typewritten by an unknown hand. Everyone has a sort of individual form vision. In all the greatest artists the seeds of this form vision has been present even in their early work, and to some extent their work has been a gradual unfolding of this rhythm throughout. (…) It’s something the artist can’t control – it’s his make up. (…) The less conscious you are of your own individual form rhythm, the more likely it is, I think, to get richer and fuller and develop. Henry Moore, 1941 What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more. Our task is not to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art, much less to squeeze more content out of the work than is already there. Our task is to cut back content so that we can see the thing at all. (…) The function of criticism should be to show how it is what it is, even that it is what it is, rather than to show what it means. -

IN 1998, CONSCIOUS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS HERITAGE AND ITS RAPID DETERIORATION, THE CITY OF BRUSSELS TASKED ITS HISTORICAL HERITAGE UNIT WITH THE JOB OF CARRYING OUT A HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL STUDY OF THE HOUSES ON THE SQUARE. THE AIM WAS TO PRESENT AN OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THEIR STATE OF REPAIR. SCHOOL OF BUILDING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE UNIT–I- URBAN DESIGN – SAR 1403 School Of Architecture UNIT 1 – Introduction and History of Urban Form Introduction to Urban Design. Urban design is concerned with the arrangement, appearance and function of our suburbs, towns and cities. Its both a process and an outcome of creating localities in which people live, engage with each other, and engage with the physical place around them. It involves the design and coordination of all that makes up cities and towns. Traditionally, the most popular definition is that urban design is the interface between urban planning and architecture. In this sense it plays a meditative role between two major disciplines involved in the urban realm, but at different levels and scales. Moreover, the latter directly tackles the physical built form in unitary particles, while planning manages more ‘abstract’ notions such as zoning, functions, transport networks and economy. Hence urban design focuses on the urban space created through the effects of planning and realized through the physicality of architectural buildings. In order for urban design to fulfill the role of a real interdisciplinary interface, it should be thought of – and taught – as a multidimensional activity. Other than planning and architecture, it should be clear that other seemingly independent disciplines play equally crucial roles in the study and/or creation of cities. Landscape architecture, communication and transport engineering, but also the ‘soft’ disciplines – sociology, economy, group and individual psychology and behavioral studies, even art and the humanities – are some of the poles that together shape the urban environment and give it its inherent subjective qualities. -

It rang the note la and weighed 10.2 kg. Its diameter was 0.019m. 1569. (14, see annexes). A bell, whose inscriptions have not been preserved, was founded by Peter van den Ghein, in 1569, for the Saint-Jacob church in Antwerp. It had been offered by the parishioners and had been consecrated to Saint Hendrick. We know, however, that it was adorned with the Coat of Arms of the Chief Church Warden, the Knight Hendrick van Berchem. The accounts of the church mention, on the same date, that a bell, called "franche clocke", weighing 990 pounds, was flawed and it was sent to Mechelen for redesign. They did not manage to agree with the founder on the conditions of work. Expenses made on this occasion, at the Gulden Hoot Inn, rose to 7 sous and 10 ½ deniers. Resolved to dispense with the good offices of van den Ghein, agents of the Saint-Jacob church travelled Mechelen, but failed to find a bell that gave the desired sound. They returned to van den Ghein and finally came to an agreement. The founder then signed a contract, by which he undertook to recast the cracked bell. -

Since then, the City has been elaborating new strategies for the Grand-Place and its surroundings to preserve its heritage, to enhance the quality of its built environment, and to reinforce its residential use and animation role. A management plan was established in 2012 for a three-year period. Key words: Grand-place, buffer zone, world heritage. Introduction The Grand-Place in Brussels is an ensemble of monumental architecture consisting of a Gothic town hall surrounded by Baroque-style houses, which owes its external appearance to profound modifications at the end of the 18th century and major restoration work during the 19Th century.
