Une «Flamandisation» De Bruxelles?
Une «flamandisation» de Bruxelles? Alice Romainville Université Libre de Bruxelles RÉSUMÉ Les médias francophones, en couvrant l'actualité politique bruxelloise et à la faveur des (très médiatisés) «conflits» communautaires, évoquent régulièrement les volontés du pouvoir flamand de (re)conquérir Bruxelles, voire une véritable «flamandisation» de la ville. Cet article tente d'éclairer cette question de manière empirique à l'aide de diffé- rents «indicateurs» de la présence flamande à Bruxelles. L'analyse des migrations entre la Flandre, la Wallonie et Bruxelles ces vingt dernières années montre que la population néerlandophone de Bruxelles n'est pas en augmentation. D'autres éléments doivent donc être trouvés pour expliquer ce sentiment d'une présence flamande accrue. Une étude plus poussée des migrations montre une concentration vers le centre de Bruxelles des migrations depuis la Flandre, et les investissements de la Communauté flamande sont également, dans beaucoup de domaines, concentrés dans le centre-ville. On observe en réalité, à défaut d'une véritable «flamandisation», une augmentation de la visibilité de la communauté flamande, à la fois en tant que groupe de population et en tant qu'institution politique. Le «mythe de la flamandisation» prend essence dans cette visibilité accrue, mais aussi dans les réactions francophones à cette visibilité. L'article analyse, au passage, les différentes formes que prend la présence institutionnelle fla- mande dans l'espace urbain, et en particulier dans le domaine culturel, lequel présente à Bruxelles des enjeux particuliers. The gradual and complex transformation into stone and brick constructions – the so-called ‘petrification’ – is one of the most important processes within cities and towns. To date, however, this phenomenon has been little studied by historians and archaeologists. How these architectural transformations and their chronology took place is still a matter of conjecture. ‘Petrification’ is nonetheless a significant process: it affects the general aspect of the cities and towns, reflecting an obvious change in the landscape and the evolution in the employed building materials. From a social viewpoint, ‘petrification’ is associated with the way in which houses are interconnected and thus is a reflection of town politics as well as the relationships between neighborhoods. Thing Theory is situated in the domain of Material cultural studies and was initially developed by Bill Brown (2001)1 as a study of objects in literature. The title refers to two books of Geert van Istendael and by the act of combining both I inscribe them in Baudelaire's tradition of observing the city of Brussels ‘through objects’. This paper explores through the object of a fountain and Manneke Pis his act of watering on the city the importance of this naked urban thing. Only 58 centimeters high he owns more than a thousand of costumes. Dressed in his architect's suite he is and remains a peeing ‘Brusseleer’ on the center of Europe. Some see in his jets of water spurting an abundance of knowledge and source of wisdom that incarnates a particularly Belgian way of thinking. A ‘Don Quixote’ attacking the ‘F*heads’? Europea NEO Brussels BRUSSELS Working with masterplanners KCAP and architects Jean-Paul Viguier, Gustafson Porter’s work at Europea Neo Brussels (‘Europea’) will create high-quality landscape within a new 68-hectare high-end mixed-use district surrounding the Roi Baudoin stadium. Our landscape design ensures this new district integrates into the surrounding urban fabric of Brussels and is chiefly comprised of the areas around the Mall of Europe, Europea gardens and the Euroville Park, home of the iconic Atomium. The design consists of large public spaces and a series of water features which offer rest areas, promenades and playgrounds for children. Our work on the Atomium Esplanade will create a spectacular space where waterfalls complement large lawns, offering a new perspective on the Atomium and the wider Heysel plateau. Won in international competition in 2012 the development was led by Jean-Paul Viguier Associés (France), with Gustafson Porter as landscape architect. The project has been developed by Unibail-Rodamco SE, BESIX and CFE, and encompasses 500 residential units, a 3.5ha park and 112.000m² dedicated to leisure, restaurants, an art district and the retail precinct “Mall of Europe”, a 72000m2 shopping centre which includes 9000m2 of restaurant and leisure facilities. It is estimated to receive 12-15 million visitors a year and is envisaged as a ‘smart city’ with high standards of environmental design. Form Vision Hans Theys Form Vision Artists on Art Tornado Editions 2019 To Tamara Van San In 1983, a fellow student handed me this Banda copy, suggesting it might be interesting for me – as an aficionado of art and literature – to study the writings of Kafka without interpreting them. The origin of the book you are holding now lies within this generous gesture. Thirty years later, when I accidently rediscovered it, I realised that the text quotes a book by Susan Sontag, translated and typewritten by an unknown hand. Everyone has a sort of individual form vision. In all the greatest artists the seeds of this form vision has been present even in their early work, and to some extent their work has been a gradual unfolding of this rhythm throughout. (…) It’s something the artist can’t control – it’s his make up. (…) The less conscious you are of your own individual form rhythm, the more likely it is, I think, to get richer and fuller and develop. Henry Moore, 1941 What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more. Our task is not to find the maximum amount of content in a work of art, much less to squeeze more content out of the work than is already there. Our task is to cut back content so that we can see the thing at all.
