The main reason for this was the uncertainty that prevailed at the beginning of this research concerning the question whether I could find baanrotsen in sources for the thirteenth and fourteenth century other than the chronicle of Jan van Heelu. De mens vult de ruimte in met steden, landbouw, kanalen en wegen, industrie, parken, bossen enz. De ruimte is een totaliteit. De ruimte heeft ook een structuur, een stelsel waarvan de verschillende onderdelen niet apart staan, maar deel uitmaken van grotere gehelen. De mens heeft behoefte aan ruimte om zijn activiteiten te kunnen ontplooien, daarom tracht hij ze naar zijn hand te zetten. De ruimte wordt bijgevolg sterk bepaald door deze activiteiten. De mens kan zich maar optimaal ontplooien als zijn ruimtelijke omgeving voldoende kwaliteiten bezit. Het begrip ruimtelijke kwaliteit steunt daarom op de relatie tussen mens en ruimte. Het is geen eigenschap van de ruimte op zich. Ruimtelijke kwaliteit gaat immers niet over de intrinsieke kenmerken van een landschap, van een binnenstad of van een stedelijke ruimte, maar over de waarde die eraan wordt gehecht in een ruimere context.

    The passage of the valley of the Lasne by the Prussian units on the 18th of June 1815. According to Von Bülow himself it was the information of major Von Falckenhausen which led Blücher to decide to cross the valley of the Lasne and to occupy the Bois de Paris. 1 Others believe it was major Von Lützow’s information which led Blücher to do so. 2 From shortly before 10 a.m. onwards, Von Lützow had, accompanied by lieutenant Von Massow and a detachment of the 2nd regiment of Silesian hussars (3), observed the positions of Wellington and Napoleon from a covered position in the western edge of the Bois de Paris. 4 Von Lützow reported to Blücher that the Bois de Paris was not occupied and that the French right flank wasn’t secured at all. Before he did so, Von Lützow left lieutenant Von Massow with the hussars behind in the wood. Some patrols had crossed the valley of the Lasne. One of them reported: Der Weg nach La Haye durch Lasne führend geht ziemlich sanft herunter das diesseitige Ufer ist bei weitem steiler. Der Weg ist, so lang das Defilée, mit 20 Fuss hohen Wenden eingeschlossen. … Der Bach der Lasne ist nur unbedeutend 2 bis 3 Fuss tief. [..] Block 5 It was Von Valentini himself, who, accompanied by a farmer and a private called Dieterichs, also acqainted himself with the fact that both the village of Lasne and the Bois de Paris were not occupied by the enemy. 6 After the 2nd regiment of Silesian hussars had entered Chapelle Saint Lambert, it detached one squadron to Lasne to verify whether it was occupied.

Plague Mortality in the Seventeenth-Century Low Countries Much current scholarship argues that in early mod- ern northwestern Europe, plagues not only were less severe than the seventeenth-century plagues that ravaged Italy; they were also far less territorially pervasive—remaining mainly in the cities and not spreading easily into the countryside. Such a view connects to a long historiography about early modern plague in northwestern Europe that largely establishes the disease as an urban phenomenon, a nar- rative that is still dominant. This view adds further weight to the “urban graveyards” notion that depicts early modern cities as death traps. From this perspective, extreme rural cases of plague, such as the famous examples of Colyton (Devon) in 1645/6 or Eyam (Derbyshire) in 1665/6 in England, look exceptional, unrepresentative of general epidemiolog- ical trends.

Solitair in het midden van het weiland staat een stoere eik in harmonische symbiose van kracht en waardigheid, koning te wezen. In de grasberm langs de gracht bloeit een weelde aan margrieten. Veldbloemen bekoren door hun eenvoud, ze ontplooien zich gaaf en puur zonder een hand die ze beschermt of leidt. Het malse gras van het hooiland is precies op tijd aan maaien toe; in de aangrenzende weiden grazen wit- zwart gevlekte koeien of liggen er urenlang te herkauwen. Een leger bruine konijntjes wipt en rent door de wei waarin de paarden staan, één paard kan dat niet verdragen en gaat furieus achter de langoortjes aan. Enkele dagen geleden is er een veulen geboren, we zagen nog net hoe het op zijn ranke benen leerde staan. Nu volgt het de merrie en vlijt zijn hoofd vertederend tegen moeders hals aan, een prachtig beeld van intimiteit en verbondenheid. In de tuin is het een explosie van rood en wit, lila en roze nu de rododendrons bloeien; prunus en blauwe regen lokken je met een fijn parfum dichterbij.

    DIEST STAD AAN DE DEMER 1 Prijs e 1 Demerwandeling Diest DIEST STAD AAN DE DEMER De wandeling Neem een duik in het Demer-verleden van Diest. Stap na stap. • Vertrekplaats: parking Provinciedomein Halve Maan Omer Vanaudenhovelaan. • Afstand: 5,5 km (ongeveer 2 uur). • Type: stadswandeling, een klein stukje over de groene stadsvesten. • Wegdek: verharde wegen en zandwegen. Aangepast schoeisel wenselijk. • Bewegwijzering: geen (zie kaart). • Niet volledig toegankelijk voor rolwagens en kinderwagens. De Demer: 85 km meanderen De Demer ontspringt in Ketsingen, deelgemeente van Tongeren en slingert zich via ’s Herenelderen (Riemst), Hoeselt, Bilzen en Hasselt naar Diest. Daarna meandert de rivier via Zichem en Aarschot naar Werchter. Hier gaat hij – 85 km na de bron – op in de Dijle. Of … omgekeerd: want de Demer is de grootste van de twee. Stad op ‘Linkeroever’ Zonder de Demer was Diest niet de bruisende stad van vandaag. Al in de prehistorie bevolken onze voorouders de linkeroever. Logisch. Hier vinden ze vis, is er stromend water. De scheepvaart op de Demer zal eeuwen later de handel en dus ook de groei van de stad stimuleren. Die ontwikkelt zich ook aan de hoge linkeroever. Rechts – aan de lage oever – is de bodem over het algemeen te instabiel en te nat voor huizenbouw. Ook voor akkerbouw is de Demervallei niet geschikt. De slibbodem is wel ideaal voor graslanden en het hooien van gras. Hij bevat veel nutriënten uit Haspengouw die de rivier in dit overstromingsgebied afzet. Deze alluviale vlakte staat Colofon bekend als het ‘Webbekoms Broek’. Ver.
