  • Gloucestershire Castles
Gloucestershire Archives Take One Castle Gloucestershire Castles The first castles in Gloucestershire were built soon after the Norman invasion of 1066. After the Battle of Hastings, the Normans had an urgent need to consolidate the land they had conquered and at the same time provide a secure political and military base to control the country. Castles were an ideal way to do this as not only did they secure newly won lands in military terms (acting as bases for troops and supply bases), they also served as a visible reminder to the local population of the ever-present power and threat of force of their new overlords. Early castles were usually one of three types; a ringwork, a motte or a motte & bailey; A Ringwork was a simple oval or circular earthwork formed of a ditch and bank. A motte was an artificially raised earthwork (made by piling up turf and soil) with a flat top on which was built a wooden tower or ‘keep’ and a protective palisade. A motte & bailey was a combination of a motte with a bailey or walled enclosure that usually but not always enclosed the motte. The keep was the strongest and securest part of a castle and was usually the main place of residence of the lord of the castle, although this changed over time. The name has a complex origin and stems from the Middle English term ‘kype’, meaning basket or cask, after the structure of the early keeps (which resembled tubes). The name ‘keep’ was only used from the 1500s onwards and the contemporary medieval term was ‘donjon’ (an apparent French corruption of the Latin dominarium) although turris, turris castri or magna turris (tower, castle tower and great tower respectively) were also used.

  • Petrification’ of Brussels Architecture an Attempted Explanation Between Construction Methods, Supply of Building Materials and Social Context (13Th-17Th Centuries)
‘Petrification’ of Brussels architecture An attempted explanation between construction methods, supply of building materials and social context (13th-17th centuries) Paulo CHARRUADAS 1 | Philippe SOSNOWSKA 2 1 Centre de Recherches en Archéologie et Patrimoine, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)-Fonds National de la Recherche scientifique (F.R.S.-FNRS), Belgium | 2 Centre de Recherches en Archéologie et Patrimoine, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium Abstract : Except for religious and aristocratic buildings, most constructions and houses in the initial stages of the former European cities and towns were mainly made of cob and timber. The gradual and complex transformation into stone and brick constructions – the so-called ‘petrification’ – is one of the most important processes within cities and towns. To date, however, this phenomenon has been little studied by historians and archaeologists. How these architectural transformations and their chronology took place is still a matter of conjecture. ‘Petrification’ is nonetheless a significant process: it affects the general aspect of the cities and towns, reflecting an obvious change in the landscape and the evolution in the employed building materials. From a social viewpoint, ‘petrification’ is associated with the way in which houses are interconnected and thus is a reflection of town politics as well as the relationships between neighborhoods. The ‘petrification’ process has also important implications in the organization of urban supplies of building materials. The relationship

  • EASTMAN NOTES JUNE 2004 Draft: Final Date: 6/15/2004 INSIDE
NOTES JUNE 2004 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR The right “stu≠” Dear Eastman Alumni: We like Notes’ new look, and it seems you do too. Response has been unani- mously favorable; perhaps we should consider a Steve Boerner–David Cowles NOTES presidential ticket for 2008. I’d vote for them; these two artists made “Notes Volume 22, Number 2 nouveau” a pleasure, and I’m glad the pleasure was conveyed in the magazine June 2004 itself. I write the stuff, but they (and our photographers) make it look good! We also had a tremendous response to our “Eastman Alumni on CD” feature; Editor see pages 33¬34. And enough of you commented on different editorial aspects of David Raymond Notes (not always favorably) that we have a “Letters to the Editor” section, which Assistant editor may be a first for us. Christina Casey This issue of Notes is admittedly filled with history, but Susan Conkling’s re- Contributing writers minder of the great women who shaped both American music and Eastman, and Martial Bednar Amy Blum Paul Burgett’s reminder of four black composers who Christine Corrado played an important part in Eastman history, are stories Contributing photographers worth telling. As is the story of the success of Howard Kurt Brownell Hanson’s Merry Mount at the Met in 1934—a remarkable Gelfand-Piper Photography event, when you think about it. I should add a special Bob Klein Photography word of thanks here to David Peter Coppen, the Sibley Carlos Ortiz Don Ver Ploeg/VP Communications Library Archivist, who is always helpful with providing Amy Vetter historical photographs and other materials for Notes, but Photography coordinator outdid himself for these three articles.

Thing Theory is situated in the domain of Material cultural studies and was initially developed by Bill Brown (2001)1 as a study of objects in literature. The title refers to two books of Geert van Istendael and by the act of combining both I inscribe them in Baudelaire's tradition of observing the city of Brussels ‘through objects’. This paper explores through the object of a fountain and Manneke Pis his act of watering on the city the importance of this naked urban thing. Only 58 centimeters high he owns more than a thousand of costumes. Dressed in his architect's suite he is and remains a peeing ‘Brusseleer’ on the center of Europe. • Het Historisch En Politiek Noodlot Van België
LEON PASCHAL HET HISTORISCH EN POLITIEK NOODLOT VAN BELGIË MET EEN VOORREDE VAN JHR. MR. A. F. DE SAVORNIN LOHMAN N.V. A. W. SIJTHOFF'S LIITGEVERSNIIJ - LEIDEN HET HISTORISCH EN POLITIEK NOODLOT VAN BELGIË LION PASCHAL HET HISTORISCH EIS POLITICK LOODLOT VAIN BELGIË MET EEN VOORREDE VAN JHR. MR. A. F. DE SAVORNIN LOHMAN N.V. A. W. SIJTHOFF'S IrIITOEVERSNIAATSGHAPPIJ - LEIDEN VOORWOORD.

  • Marco Polo – the Label of Discovery
Marco Polo – The Label of Discovery Doubt was expressed by his contemporaries as to the truth of Marco Polo’s account of his years at the court of the Mongol Emperor of China. For some he was known as a man of a million lies, and one recent scholar has plausibly suggested that the account of his travels was a fiction inspired by a family dispute. There is, though, no doubt about the musical treasures daily uncovered by the Marco Polo record label. To paraphrase Marco Polo himself: All people who wish to know the varied music of men and the peculiarities of the various regions of the world, buy these recordings and listen with open ears. The original concept of the Marco Polo label was to bring to listeners unknown compositions by well-known composers. There was, at the same time, an ambition to bring the East to the West. Since then there have been many changes in public taste and in the availability of recorded music. Composers once little known are now easily available in recordings. Marco Polo, in consequence, has set out on further adventures of discovery and exploration. One early field of exploration lay in the work of later Romantic composers, whose turn has now come again. In addition to pioneering recordings of the operas of Franz Schreker, Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound), Die Gezeichneten (The Marked Ones) and Die Flammen (The Flames), were three operas by Wagner’s son, Siegfried. Der Bärenhäuter (The Man in the Bear’s Skin), Banadietrich and Schwarzschwanenreich (The Kingdom of the Black Swan) explore a mysterious medieval world of German legend in a musical language more akin to that of his teacher Humperdinck than to that of his father.
