    1 The Difference between Blessing (bracha) and Prayer (tefilah) What is a Bracha? On the most basic level, a bracha is a means of recognizing the good that God has given to us. As the Talmud2 states, the entire world belongs to God, who created everything, and partaking in His creation without consent would be tantamount to stealing. When we acknowledge that our food comes from God – i.e. we say a bracha – God grants us permission to partake in the world's pleasures. This fulfills the purpose of existence: To recognize God and come close to Him. Once we have been satiated, we again bless God, expressing our appreciation for what He has given us.3 So, first and foremost, a bracha is a "please" and a "thank you" to the Creator for the sustenance and pleasure He has bestowed upon us. The Midrash4 relates that Abraham's tent was pitched in the middle of an intercity highway, and open on all four sides so that any traveler was welcome to a royal feast. Inevitably, at the end of the meal, the grateful guests would want to thank Abraham. "It's not me who you should be thanking," Abraham replied. "God provides our food and sustains us moment by moment. To Him we should give thanks!" Those who balked at the idea of thanking God were offered an alternative: Pay full price for the meal. Considering the high price for a fabulous meal in the desert, Abraham succeeded in inspiring even the skeptics to "give God a try." This marks a new stage when they are no longer practicing all the traditions and rituals, but are now full fledged adults and have the rights and responsibilities of the millions of Jews who passed this stage before them. As they are just about to enter their „teen‟ years, this beautiful process will allow them to find the pride and identity amongst their elders and friends. At Chabad we try to work with you to make the over-all process as powerful and memorable as possible to yourself, your child and all those involved. The most powerful thing we can do for your child is to give them positive memories of their Jewish education along with a strong footing in their Jewish heritage that will last them a lifetime. Of course we could not complete the journey without the complete support of the parents at home. Although we keep homework to a minimum, as the big day gets closer, there will be extra time needed at home.     Daniel Cooperrider 1 September 2019 Weybridge Congregational Church Amos 5: 24 Rivers of the Bible: Justice and Peace (Like a River) Introduction to Scripture Before we turn our attention to our scriptures for today, I’d like to give a little introduction or orientation to where we are, in terms of today being the third or actually fourth week of our seven week summer series on the theme of the Rivers of the Bible. The first week, as a reminder or introduction, we began with an experimental circular worship in our fellowship area downstairs, in which, in place of the sermon, we organized ourselves into a river flowing through that space, each placing ourselves along the course of the river wherever felt our lives landing at that moment—from the headwaters and source, to the riffles and rapids, to the winding bends and flat straight stretches, to the wide deep estuary or mouth. As we passed the microphone downstream to share our own river thoughts, we created our own flowing river of shared testimony together. The last two weeks have seen us focus on some key river stories in the Bible. Two weeks ago we began at the beginning with the story about the river of paradise that was said to flow out of the Garden of Eden. The question that week was the question of ultimate source, the question of ultimate beginning. Where actually does a river begin?, as a way of wondering, Where actually does all of this begin? My sermon that week included a personal adventure story of hiking up the side of Mount Tabor in southern Vermont trying to find the exact source of Otter Creek that flows through our town here.

Some features of our school of which we are especially proud: Tzedakah & Tikun Olam Our students learn the importance of Jewish ethics and values. They learn about Tikun Olam (repairing the world) and Tzedakah through hands-on participation in ongoing charity projects, including providing food for the homeless, Habitat for Humanity and literacy programs. B’nai Mitzvah students provide meaningful gifts; these have included money, time, books, blankets, mittens, and services. Services Learning to participate in congregational services is an important part of our school. Every school day starts with Tefilah in the sanctuary. The Rabbi is joined by students assigned to do recitations for day. He adds insight and explanations. On Sundays, Mrs. Hindy Kalmenson explores the weekly Torah portion with discussion, drama and games. Bar/Bat Mitzvah During the week prior to being called to the Torah as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, our students read Torah on Monday and Thursday morning and lead Shaharit on Friday morning. On Shabbat morning, they read Torah and Haftarah and lead the Torah service and Musaf. Family Events In addition to classroom learning, students come together for holiday activities, family learning workshops, Shabbat services and Havdalah. Learning Differences Our religious school program is open to children in grades K-8. Our staff works with our families to develop and modify instruction to meet the individual needs of each student. At Beth El, it is important for all learners to have access to their Jewish heritage. Our program engages students in Judaic studies, cultural experiences, Hebrew instruction, and prayer skills.
