"------The 1980 College of Law Fund Report Our $64,000 Goal Was Surpassed-Greatly!

Chairman's Message

Ask a friendly witness at trial a question you don't already know the answer to, and the result is predictable: a big sur- prise. It seems that this old trial lawyer's axiom applies in fund- raising as well. But in fund-raising the surprise is not always a bad one. Last June College of Law Fund volunteers first began ask- ing you "The $64.000 Question." We all felt that that dollar goal was one we could achieve, perhaps even slightly surpass. By your generous response to our "questioning," you demon- strated what timid forecasters we really were! Special thanks go to many people: Carroll Redford; Bob Houlihan; Judge Harris Howard; Roy Ray; Homer Ramsey; J. Woodford Howard, J r.; members of the lafferty Society, the Visiting Committee and Board of Directors of the College of law Alumni Association; the 50 + Class and Area Agents. 1n addition, the generous gifts represented by the lengthy lists for the Dean's Club, Sponsors, Associates and Patrons merit hearty accolades. (The average gift among alumni was $1431) By achieving this $93,000 total, we have made a statement to Dean lewis and the faculty, to Dr. Singletary and the Uni- versity leadership, to the Council on Higher Education and the Commonwealth: We are proud of our law school and we take our commitment to it seriously. Quality without com- promise is what the school deserves; it is what we pledge to see it obtain. let's not stop here. We have shown that a six figure goal is attainable in the years ahead. What a nice surprise that achievement would be for 1981. Joe B. Campbell

3 Dean's Response

In the last issue of The Review I reported on the first half of Sixth, our Recruitment Committee energetically pursued the year in a tone that at best could be described as cautious its new mandate to develop a recruiting program aimed at optimism. At that time I could see that the goal of the College of Law Fund during its fourth year would be met, and I could point out from logic and some experience during the year that ad- Gift Designation Summary justments we had made in our CLE programming would not have any significant effect on program quality. 4 Seventh, your law Alumni Association acting through its Board of Directors completed one of its most active and pro- ductive years. Attendance at the several meetings of the Board was excellent and discussion was positive and fruitful. You surely have seen the Association's page in the Bench and Bar, which will be a continuing feature. We are indebted to President John Heyburn for this idea and its implementation.

If you will think of our educational program as a structure, all of the above comments will be seen to relate to the foun- dation of the structure. The superstructure consists of what we asa faculty do to educate students and how we do it. Our Curriculum Committee this year studied quite thoroughly the question of what we do-our conglomerate of courses, the sequence in which they are offered, and the credit hours allotted to them. The Committee's report stimu- lated more than nine hours of discussion during two Saturday faculty meetings. We now have a better understanding of these facets of our curriculum than before, but we did not address to a signifi- cant extent teaching methodology- the question of how we use the allotted credit hours. As you know, the casebook and variations on the use of lecture, and the so-called socratic method, constitute the core of our methodology.
