At our social time after Mass, that guy whose name you can’t remember might just become the guy you shoot hoops with on Thursdays or Fridays or play golf with on the weekends. That family who awkwardly looks in your direction sometime at Mass just might love playing board games as much as your family does and may want to start a monthly game night. And those newcomers/visitors could really use a friend. They might real- ly appreciate having someone to tell them what grocery store carries the best meats, fish and cheeses, which restaurant is the best seafood place in town, or why Father’s homily should be longer or shorter.

I invite all of us at Holy Trinity use this as an opportunity not only to visit with each other but especially to welcome visitors and get to know them so that they will know us through our open hearts.

The Temptation of

My dear friends in ,

Today’s gospel reading presents us with the temptation of Jesus. Notice that the Gospel began by telling us that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert. In other words, Jesus was not alone in the desert. Naturally speaking, you would think that the devil seeing Jesus and the Holy Spirit would retreat, but he was deter- mined to derail Jesus from his mission of transforming lives and saving souls. Jesus’ temptation ended in victory and became the beginning of the reconstruction and reunification of the world because despite the inducement to satisfy the self, he remained selfless.

On Ash Wednesday, we heard about the three pillars of Lent namely, prayer, fasting and almsgiving, and we were encouraged to go into the desert of our hearts for forty days and strive to embrace these pillars of our faith. It is appropriate that we are reminded today that faith in God and our efforts to pray, fast, and give alms do not exempt us from or make us less vulnerable to temptations rather, when we do not get dis- couraged in the face of tribulations, we become stronger and grow deeper in our faith.

Just like Jesus our Savior, we will face different kinds of temptation. Part of our temptation may be that we gave up something for Lent and try to reward ourselves in some other way; it may be that we constantly seeking attention or approval for works of charity; it may even be that after a few days into Lent, forty days begin to appear too long and you begin to slip away from upholding what we gave up for Lent. Whatever the case, I encourage you to persevere and journey with Christ till the end.

With Jesus we pray “Our Father…lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,” Amen.

Appreciation

Our Knights’ breakfast in the parish hall last Sunday was a success. Many of you, even some who came to Saturday vigil Mass, attended the Sunday breakfast. I thank the Knights of Columbus in our parish for say- ing yes to this wonderful initiative, and the brother Knights from St. Monica’s for coming to help and sup- port us. We truly appreciate the Knights for their service to our parish community.

Last Tuesday’s Mardi Gras celebration was spectacular. It was festive, joy-filled, and we had many visitors who expressed gratitude for how hospitable our parishioners were. I thank Dr. Gail McClave, Mike and Sharon Hennick, Elaine Caldwell, Laura Doffing, and everyone who sponsored, decorated, cleaned up and helped to make it a memorable day for us.

LENTEN FAITH SHARING GROUPS You are an apostle who can make a difference! Sign up!

We often look forward to Lent as a time of spiritual housecleaning, better discipline - a time to improve our game, so to speak. To this end, one great place to start is to sign up for a Lent Faith Sharing Group. You can sign up with any group of people you wish (sign-up sheets are in the vestibule of the church). Materials for reflection and discussion about the Lenten Scripture readings will be provided. Just as Jesus shared his jour- ney with his disciples, we will break open Scripture and share ideas with one another to delve a little deeper into the life of Christ, discovering new ways we can imitate Him more closely during the season of Lent.

WHAT: Parish Faith Sharing Groups. WHEN: Once a week during the Lenten season. WHERE: See sign-up sheet. WHY: To draw closer to Christ and one another. HOW: Sign up at the back of the church today!

Our parish recommendations on FORMED this week for: Youth Adults

Beckoning, the long-awaited sequel to Awakening, follows Tabby Long, a modern-day, 14-year-old non-Christian who attends a Catholic school. On Good Friday, her father is mi- raculously healed of the eye disease that was leading to blindness. He has an immediate conversion to Christ, some- thing that causes a rift with his wife and pushes Tabby to investigate how her father has come to faith.

In the Adoration Chapel, Tabby follows the Ignatian Spirituali- ty practice of inserting oneself into the stories of Sacred Scripture. In doing so, she envisions herself in when Jesus is crucified. She imagines herself to be Tabitha Longinus, the daughter of Centurion Longinus, the soldier who crucifies Christ, pierces his heart with a lance, and experiences an immediate healing of his eye disease, causing him to exclaim, “Truly, this was the Son of God.”

In her imagined life in Biblical times, Tabitha navigates the choppy waters her family treads following her father’s con- version at the foot of the cross. Eventually, she finds herself alone in Jerusalem, beset by tragedy, and in danger as she is pursued by a Temple guard who wants to arrest her. But she is not deterred from learning about the source of her father’s faith and exploring whether the crucified and risen Lord is beckoning her to follow Him, too.
