The Crucifixion John’s : The Adulterous Woman

goes to the Mount of Olives and by day visits the Temple to teach. • While there, the scribes and , seek to trap Him. • It’s a catch 22: If He condemns her, He can be accused of showing no mercy to sinners; if He releases her, He can be accused of opposing the law. • His answer is the classic trickster/fool’s response, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” John’s Gospel: Jesus’ Claims

• Jn 8:57-58—Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” • Jn 10:30-33—“I and My Father are one.” Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?” • The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.” John’s Gospel: Lazarus (The Final Straw)

• Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary, and were close friends of Jesus. • The dynamic between Lazarus, Mary, Martha, and are very personal and real, authentic. Pay attention to this! • This is a key event on the way to the Crucifixion. John’s Gospel: Lazarus (The Final Straw)

• Lazarus is the third resurrection Christ will do: • The first was the daughter of Jairus, which happens just after she dies. (Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43) • The second was the raising of the son of the widow of Nain, which happened at the moment they were carrying the corpse to the tomb. (Luke 7:11-17) • Lazarus is DEAD. Jesus will resurrect him after 4 days being dead. John’s Gospel: Lazarus (The Final Straw)

• This is important, because Jesus is going to resurrect Himself soon—this establishes precedence as well as ability. • The Jews had to believe that He Who has the power to raise someone from the dead for four days has the power to raise Himself in three days. • It’s also really pretty showy—it’s going to fry the Pharisees! John’s Gospel: Lazarus (The Final Straw)

• Once word of this gets out, Jesus is going to be a major distraction for the Jewish community and authorities. • The very next scene will be the Sanhedrin’s plot to kill Jesus. • After the plot against Jesus is begun, the scene shifts back to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus again. • Lazarus is eating with Jesus, Martha is serving, and Mary anoints Jesus with spikenard (fragrant burial oil—seriously expensive). • Foreshadowing! Triumphal Entry

• It is now the festival of Passover. • Jesus is approaching for the festival. • Rumors are running wild • —Lazarus is risen from the dead! • —Jesus claims to be God! • —Is He the messiah?!? • When He arrives, he receives a kingly reception • But it is a humble performance Triumphal Entry

• Christ enters on the city to throngs quoting King David’s Psalm 117 (118): • Open unto me the gates of righteousness; I will enter therein and give thanks unto the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord, the righteous shall enter in thereat. I will give thanks unto Thee, for Thou hast heard me and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in your eyes. This is the day that the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad therein. O Lord, save now; O Lord, send now prosperity. Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Triumphal Entry

• The Pharisees grow alarmed by the attention Christ receives. • “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” • But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” (Lk 19:39-40) Triumphal Entry

• Zechariah 9:9-11speaks of this scene: • 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. • 10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. • 11 As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. The Last Days…

• After the Triumphal entry, Jesus goes to the Temple and tosses out the money changers and salesmen. • Jesus begins to teach, and we get the fantastic sparring between Christ and the Pharisees and scribes. • This will finally end with the great challenge from Christ, “How does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: • The Lord said to my Lord, • Sit at My right hand, • Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’? (Matthew 22:41-46) • It’s a fun moment. The Last Days: Wednesday

is forced to bear the cross of Jesus to Golgotha. • Jesus is given sour wine and gall. • While He is crucified, soldiers divide His clothes by casting lots. • “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” • Longinus The Last Days: Friday

• At the cross: Mary, Jesus’ mother, Her sister-in-law Mary the wife of (Clopas was Joseph’s brother), , and John. • He saw his mother standing with John. “‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then He said to the , Behold your mother!’ And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.” Jn 19:26-27. • John is reporting how he came to take in the Theotokos Mary. And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, remember me when you come into Your kingdom.’” • “And Jesus said to him, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.’” Lk 23:39-43 The Last Days: Friday
