Having passed through the churchyard we continued walking over fields and a lane to Colliers Way, being part of the national cycle network from Bath to Southampton. There is still evidence of the old railway line visible in the undergrowth. On leaving Colliers Way and crossing a field we dropped down a lane to Mells Stream at Great Elm and meandered along Wadbury Walley through the woods alongside the stream. Amongst the undergrowth can still be seen remains of the former Fussells of Mells iron-edge tool works (1744 – 1894). At the end of the woodland path we walked the lane back to Mells Post Office. Thence to The George at Nunney for lunch (don’t mention the heritage carrots!) A seasonal reminder to all walkers in the countryside to take precautions from ticks by tucking trousers into socks and wearing long sleeved tops. After walks, especially through long grass, it is advisable to check one’s body all over for signs of ticks. Two members of our group have recently suffered from ticks this year. Stay vigilant. On 1st September the walk to be led by Steve Gale and Viv Biss will be at Motcombe followed by lunch at the Coppleridge Inn. Please let Viv or Steve know if you will be joining them. [email protected] or [email protected] 4 This year’s MLF promises to be an event not to be missed. There are talks by various authors and I would like to highlight two I consider well worth going to. Wednesday 09.10.19 2.00pm Paul Hooley- The Undercover Nazi Agent St Michael’s Church £7.00pp Following his hugely popular talk last year, Paul Hooley returns to the Festival to tell us more about the life and work of Wolfe Frank, chief interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials, who spent his final years living in Mere where he completed his memoirs, about his extraordinary life and times. Setting sun, rising harvest moon Autumn is coming albeit too soon. JP Harvest certainly started very well, the weather being perfect with hot sunny dry days, which enabled us quickly to clear the spring crops. Then the heavens opened and the rain continues to disrupt leaving us with a prolonged frustrating harvest! As a slight diversion at least from harvest, if not the rain, we could concentrate our minds with showing. ‘Oh No Harry’ and Olivia duly went to The Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show, where the rain was unforgiving and everyone was soaked to the skin. The wind did not want to be left out, and did its best at blowing the makeshift housing for the cattle so violently that the water held in the roof cascaded over man and beast. Our lovely young bull Oh No Harry was a little nervous but soon settled down and even though the rain and wind did its utmost he deservedly got 2nd place. Olivia our young heifer also got 2nd and we won First Prize for the Best Show Pen. Oh No Harry lay down with his head on the straw bale attracting much attention from would be David Baileys. • Addendum to School Places Strategy 2017-2022 – Explanation of the Differences Between Wiltshire Community Areas and Wiltshire School Planning Areas
Addendum to School Places Strategy 2017-2022 – Explanation of the differences between Wiltshire Community Areas and Wiltshire School Planning Areas This document should be read in conjunction with the School Places Strategy 2017 – 2022 and provides an explanation of the differences between the Wiltshire Community Areas served by the Area Boards and the School Planning Areas. The Strategy is primarily a school place planning tool which, by necessity, is written from the perspective of the School Planning Areas. A School Planning Area (SPA) is defined as the area(s) served by a Secondary School and therefore includes all primary schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into that secondary school. As these areas can differ from the community areas, this addendum is a reference tool to aid interested parties from the Community Area/Area Board to define which SPA includes the schools covered by their Community Area. It is therefore written from the Community Area standpoint. Amesbury The Amesbury Community Area and Area Board covers Amesbury town and surrounding parishes of Tilshead, Orcheston, Shrewton, Figheldean, Netheravon, Enford, Durrington (including Larkhill), Milston, Bulford, Cholderton, Wilsford & Lake, The Woodfords and Great Durnford. It encompasses the secondary schools The Stonehenge School in Amesbury and Avon Valley College in Durrington and includes primary schools which feed into secondary provision in the Community Areas of Durrington, Lavington and Salisbury. However, the School Planning Area (SPA) is based on the area(s) served by the Secondary Schools and covers schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into either The Stonehenge School in Amesbury or Avon Valley College in Durrington.

  • Ancient Market Towns and Beautiful Villages
Ancient Market Towns and Beautiful Villages Wiltshire is blessed with a fantastic variety of historic market towns and stunning picturesque villages, each one with something to offer. Here are a sample of Wiltshire’s beautiful market towns and villages. Amesbury Nestling within a loop of the River Avon alongside the A303, just 1½ miles from Stonehenge, historic Amesbury is a destination not to be missed. With recent evidence of a large settlement from 8820BC and a breath-taking Mesolithic collection, Amesbury History Centre will amaze visitors with its story of the town where history began. Bradford on Avon The unspoilt market town of Bradford on Avon offers a mix of delightful shops, restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfasts lining the narrow streets, not to mention a weekly market on Thursdays (8am-4pm). Still a natural focus at the centre of the town, the ancient bridge retains two of its 13th century arches and offers a fabulous view of the hillside above the town - dotted with the old weavers' cottages – and the river bank flanked by 19th century former cloth mills. Calne Calne evolved during the 18th and 19th centuries with the wool industry. Blending the old with the new, much of the original Calne is located along the River Marden where some of the historic buildings still remain. There is also the recently restored Castlefields Park with nature trails and cycle path easily accessible from the town centre. Castle Combe Set within the stunning Wiltshire Cotswolds, Castle Combe is a classically quaint English village. Often referred to as the ‘prettiest village in England’, it has even been featured regularly on the big screen – most recently in Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Wolfman’ and Stephen Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’.
