Zeals Walkers On Sunday 4th August, in ideal walking weather, a dozen of us enjoyed a circular walk from Mells Post Office towards St Andrews Church. Having passed through the churchyard we continued walking over fields and a lane to Colliers Way, being part of the national cycle network from Bath to . There is still evidence of the old railway line visible in the undergrowth. On leaving Colliers Way and crossing a field we dropped down a lane to Mells Stream at Great Elm and meandered along Wadbury Walley through the woods alongside the stream. Amongst the undergrowth can still be seen remains of the former Fussells of Mells iron-edge tool works (1744 – 1894). At the end of the woodland path we walked the lane back to Mells Post Office. Thence to The George at Nunney for lunch (don’t mention the heritage carrots!) A seasonal reminder to all walkers in the countryside to take precautions from ticks by tucking trousers into socks and wearing long sleeved tops. After walks, especially through long grass, it is advisable to check one’s body all over for signs of ticks. Two members of our group have recently suffered from ticks this year. Stay vigilant. On 1st September the walk to be led by Steve Gale and Viv Biss will be at Motcombe followed by lunch at the Coppleridge Inn. Please let Viv or Steve know if you will be joining them. This year’s MLF promises to be an event not to be missed. There are talks by various authors and I would like to highlight two I consider well worth going to. Sue Evans Monday 07.10.19 7.00pm Ruth Wilson - Before & After St Michael’s Church £12.00pp The award winning actress Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair, Hedda Gabler, Jane Eyre), who played her own grandmother in the popular BBC Drama Mrs. Wilson, will be talking with the journalist Chloe Fox about the making of the drama and other aspects of her career.

Wednesday 09.10.19 2.00pm Paul Hooley- The Undercover Nazi Agent St Michael’s Church £7.00pp Following his hugely popular talk last year, Paul Hooley returns to the Festival to tell us more about the life and work of Wolfe Frank, chief interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials, who spent his final years living in Mere where he completed his memoirs, about his extraordinary life and times.

Country Calendar : September 2019 Heavy the silence Fields stand so bare Quietly foraging a solitary hare. Setting sun, rising harvest moon Autumn is coming albeit too soon. JP

Harvest certainly started very well, the weather being perfect with hot sunny dry days, which enabled us quickly to clear the spring crops. Then the heavens opened and the rain continues to disrupt leaving us with a prolonged frustrating harvest! As a slight diversion at least from harvest, if not the rain, we could concentrate our minds with showing. ‘Oh No Harry’ and Olivia duly went to The Gillingham and Show, where the rain was unforgiving and everyone was soaked to the skin. The wind did not want to be left out, and did its best at blowing the makeshift housing for the cattle so violently that the water held in the roof cascaded over man and beast. Our lovely young bull Oh No Harry was a little nervous but soon settled down and even though the rain and wind did its utmost he deservedly got 2nd place. Olivia our young heifer also got 2nd and we won First Prize for the Best Show Pen.

Oh No Harry lay down with his head on the straw bale attracting much attention from would be David Baileys. Jane Parker 6

As part of the day, the Kilmington & Stourton Women’s Institute were invited to offer teas and cake to the public, the proceeds of which they very generously offered to the Kilmington Church Tower Society. Over 300 people visited the garden and the wonderful sum of £800 was made for the Tower Society. Very many thanks and congratulations to Bella and to everyone concerned for such a successful event.

News from

Throughout the summer Stourhead was enjoyed by many families, having picnics in the garden, joining in with the summer craft workshops, using our adventure lanyards, playing Bank or Bust, and exploring the collection in the house.

Now that the summer is passing, we are looking forward to autumn and some early hints and tints of the season can already been seen around the garden. We are always asked when the best time is to see the autumn colours, and really there is no one answer for this. What comes of autumn very much depends on the weather we get in the coming weeks, particularly how much wind and rain and of course sun we have.

We’re making plans on how to welcome the vast numbers of visitors that come during the autumn season and hope that we will be welcoming you also. We’re putting out our autumn winter range in the shop, following the summer sale, and are starting to offer a range of hearty and warming dishes on the menu in the restaurant.

You may notice that we are starting to talk more about Christmas as we want to let our visitors know of reasons to return, including seeing the property in a completely different light with the magical, after-dark, illuminated trail, Christmas at Stourhead. As well as this new evening offer, we will of course be opening up the house in the daytime, beautifully dressed with handmade decorations. We will of course be welcoming Father Christmas once again, who will be sharing a story with all the children.

We hope that you will all join us in wishing for a great autumn season, one that is long and full of colour, I am sure that you enjoy walking around the garden, seeing the golden reflections on the lake and the taking in the autumnal scents, including that of burnt sugar from the Katsura trees, as much as we all do.

If you want to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, please do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon. Charlotte, Marketing & Communications Officer [email protected] or 01747 842021.

Green Fingers : September Notes from the not so green fingered The year has turned full circle again and I have run out of " flowers of the month” and garden tips. So for the next three months I will write about three gardens that I have particularly enjoyed visiting, and then it is someone else's turn to fill this slot. Any volunteers please tell Celia (see below) Just this summer I visited this most beautiful of gardens. Giardini La Mortella is situated on the island of Ischia just off Sorrento in mainland Italy. Susana Walton, wife of the British composer William Walton started to develop La Mortella Gardens in 1956. The couple engaged the help of British landscape architect Russell Page and between them they developed these magical gardens. The gardens run up a steep hillside that is crossed by shady pools and fountains with many places to sit and listen to the faint sounds of William Walton’s music. The extensive plant collection is a bold mix of tropical and Mediterranean plants. These gardens, so worthy of a visit, are open from April to November on selected days of the week.

We are most grateful to Pippa for her informative and entertaining articles over the past two years. If there is anyone who would like to take over from January 2020, please get in touch with me. Many thanks. Celia Cotton, Editor 11

Dogs without Collars It seems a while ago now, but on 5th July, Graham Perryman and his wonderful Band performed at Bourton Village Hall in their usual exuberant style. The gig was a sell-out and hugely enjoyable - there was much dancing! Many thanks to all the organisers and to all the kind people who donated nibbles etc, and especially to Sarah Bullivant for overseeing and coordinating all the refreshments. A wonderful £1,635 was taken on the night for PCC funds. The parish is particularly grateful to Dogs without Collars for coming to perform for us free of charge for a second time.

Open the Book Psalm 78v4 NLT “We will not hide these truths from our children but will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord.”

I am pleased to say a sum of £120 from the retiring collection on 7th July, celebrating 20 years of Open the Book, was sent to the Bible Society for work in Africa. Further news of exciting work in Ghana has been sent to me. The first international Open the Book team was set up 4 years ago in Ghana and a local headmaster has shared how it has made a huge difference to the many children. Behaviour has improved dramatically and children have taken the message of Jesus into their hearts, sharing it with their parents. They are looking to expand their work. Bourton Village Hall Trust AGM : 5th August 2019 Some 40 people attended this year’s AGM. The Chairman of Trustees, Paul Curry, reported that the Hall is alive and well, hosting regular weekly and monthly bookings by groups including The Bowls Club, Craft and Chat, The Gardening Club and Cubs and Beavers among others. Zumba and Pilates have been regulars. The Parish Council continues to hold its monthly meeting, now regularly needing the space available in the main hall. The village lunch is still held monthly; some younger faces would be very welcome. Film Night remains an essential, showing ‘blockbuster’ films to attract the largest audiences. The calendar is augmented by a variety of events; quiz nights, private parties, talks, live music and of course, the Panto, which this year raised over £2000. During the meeting, seven Trustees were re-elected, forming the Board whose responsibility is policy and strategic planning, supported by the Volunteers Group, who do all the marvellous work organising and running events .. A report on the New Village Hall Project described how progress is being made by the Parish Council in obtaining the transfer of land for the new Hall. The meeting was informed that a major campaign to raise grants and funds will start before the year’s end, once the land has been secured. Closing the meeting, Paul offered his thanks, and those of the Trustees, to the too small group of volunteers, who donate their time and their cheerfulness. He appealed for new volunteers. He noted that the present hall cladding had been refinished, damaged pathways repaired, and plans were being made to redecorate the Hall’s interior.

News from Parish Councils

Bourton The past few weeks have been unprecedently busy for Bourton Parish Council. On August 1st the Parish Council held an Extraordinary General Meeting in light of the letter that had been circulated to residents by a group who are independent from the PC. The details of this meeting can be seen on the Bourton Community Village website www.bourtondorset.org/parishcouncil. With regard to our wonderful village website, Nick Hall would welcome a volunteer who would be willing to work alongside Nick and help out with the running of the website. If anyone is interested in helping with this vital part of our community please contact the clerk, Eve Wynn at [email protected] It was agreed at the June meeting that the Parish Council should invest in a microphone/PA system and these were up and running for the EGM and proved to be very effective in ensuring that everyone - public and councillors - could have their say and be heard. For information, the October meeting has been moved forward and will now take place on 21st October" Eve Wynn, Clerk

Kilmington The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Thursday 5 September starting at 7.30 pm in the Whitesheet Primary Academy; items on the Agenda will include an update on the footpath across the playing field, parking outside the playing field and new signage on the B3092 at Coombe Barn lane. Full details will be given in the October report. From the archives: Looking back at the Minutes of a meeting in July 1999, the Parish Council was starting negotiations with the National Trust to purchase the playing field land. It was eventually agreed to pay £2500 for the land and the transfer deed was dated 16 October 2000. Also in the autumn of 1999, plans were being progressed for the millennium celebrations and the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. At that time, your Clerk was living and working in Milton Keynes and would have had no idea that twenty years later, she would be involved with a tiny Parish Council in a rural village in Wiltshire; she would rather not think about what she could be doing in another 20 years! Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Stourton with Gasper The Parish Council (PC) held a Site Planning meeting on 2 August to consider the planning application (19/05874/FUL) which the National Trust (NT) has submitted to (WC) for improvements to the car parking facilities continued on page 21 ….. 20 for the houses they rent to residents in Stourton Lane. No one from the NT was available to attend the meeting which highlighted serious safety concerns in regard to the current entrance that were not included within the proposed alterations. Consequently the PC, whilst not objecting to the plans, could not support them either. They have therefore written to the NT suggesting that they might wish to take another look at their proposals and these comments have also been passed on to WC. As this magazine is usually published and available towards the end of the previous month for which it refers, I would like to bring to the attention of all parishioners that Stourhead Western Estates has asked for a formal response from the PC to their plans to create a new 215 acre Woodland Creation project at Bonham Farm. All details on www.stourhead.com/estate/bonham.html website or by contacting Nick Hoare. This will be an item on the Agenda for discussion at our next meeting on Thursday 29 August commencing at 7 pm in the Memorial Hall. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Zeals Summers are normally quiet and this year has not been an exception. However, there are issues looming on the horizon that will need close attention. Readers can catch up on past Council matters by exploring the website www.hugofox.com/communities/zeals. Councillors meet again on Thursday 12 September at 7 pm in the Village hall, with the Trustees and Management Committee of the Hall having their short meeting beforehand. Of special interest will be the presentation given in the Open Forum part of the meeting by an outdoor activities company who would like to run Bushcraft Activites for young and old in the Westfield Wood. The managed upgrading of the playground by the Westfield housing area continues: now that the perimeter fencing around the swings is in place we will then move on to have the wire fencing repairs completed around the soccer pitch. Plans are in place to brighten up the facility through a painting programme, which should follow quite soon. In addition to residents being very welcome to attend on 12th September, I feel I should also extend once again an invitation to those from our area who have never come across using a Defibrillator before. I know I am repeating myself here, but the Defibrillator Training Evening run by SW NHS Ambulance Services is open to all. In case you have missed previous notices, it is due to take place in the Village Hall from 7pm on Tuesday 24 September. Graham Edgar: Clerk
