UEFA Research Grant Programme 2011/12
UEFA Research Grant Programme 2011/12 Researcher: John Hughson, Professor of Sport and Cultural Studies, Director of the International Football Institute, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK Project: Football Supporter Culture in Serbia: Considering an anti-violent future 1 This final report is presented to UEFA as a position paper on the future directions for the football supporter culture in Serbia. The proposals with which the report concludes are admittedly ambitious, but not, in the opinion of the author, unrealistic. The proposed recommendations are achievable, depending on the commitment of relevant organisations. The author remains at the disposal of UEFA and the key organisations in Serbia for further advice and input towards the pursuit of positive directions in Serbia’s football supporting culture. The research undertaken for this report has informed academic outputs that are presently in preparation for submission to refereed academic journals. These intended publications and a related larger, on-going, project on ‘positive futures’ for Serbian sport are outlined in the concluding section of this report. Background The key intention of the project is to contribute to the larger plan – actively pursued by UEFA – to eradicate violent conduct from football supporting in Europe. Although much has been accomplished since the darker years of the 1980s, hooligan type activity remains a problem and, understandably enough, UEFA has acknowledged its role as an organisation with responsibility toward the resolution of this problem. The answers are not simple and any attempt to present facile and easy solutions would rightly be dismissed by anyone with knowledge of football associated violence – right through from senior administrators in the sport, to the police, the media and the majority of violence 2 abhorring football fans. -

Fan Cosmologies and Relationships Between Celtic's
DOI: 10.2298/GEI1602305H UDK 796.073/.332(414.3)(497.5) Original scientific paper Andrew Hodges Institut za etnologiju i folkloristiku, Zagreb; NEWFELPRO/Marie Curie Scholar [email protected] The Left and the Rest? Fan Cosmologies and Relationships between Celtic’s Green Brigade and Dinamo Zagreb’s Bad Blue Boys Through examining ethnographic material alongside a forum discussion on the website ultrastifo, this paper relates fan solidarities occasionally asserted between certain members of Green Brigade (Celtic FC) and the Bad Blue Boys (NK Dinamo Zagreb) to what I term fan cosmologies. I first describe my theoretical positioning with respect to fan activist groups and initiatives, before making some notes concerning the two fan groups’ political contexts. I then consider the empirical material, concluding with a brief discussion of fan cosmologies as an approach to studying football fan groups anthropologically. Key words: football, ultras, fan solidarities, cosmology. -

Conceptualizations of Masculinity Among Young
CONCEPTUALIZATIONS OF MASCULINITY AMONG YOUNG MEN IN SERBIA By Jovan Grubić Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Gender Studies Supervisor: Elissa Helms CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2014 Abstract This thesis is an effort to explore the expressions of masculinity among young men in contemporary Serbia who actively took part in workshops organized through the Young Men Initiative, a project that sought to challenge ―Balkan‖ masculinity by its implementation. By analyzing interviews conducted with these young men, much information was gathered related to masculinity in the various social contexts of Serbia. Therefore, this study contributes to existing literature on men and masculinities in the Serbian context. In order to contextualize their experiences during the violent division of ex-Yugoslavia and the war in Kosovo, followed by economic sanctions and NATO bombings that were happening almost simultaneously within the so called post-socialist transition process, I consider a brief history of these events and conflicts to place these young men in a specific time and place. In my research, I have questioned their gender roles enactment, engagement in sport activities, encounters with violence and their work experiences. I also looked at their family and relationships and discovered negotiations of the roles they performed. I discovered their ability to perform multiple conceptualizations of masculinity in relation to both dominant and subordinate masculine identities. Finally, young men from technical schools living in suburbs have showed how they both perform and challenge so-called hegemonic masculinity while also engaging directly with it. -
