Prüferin: Prof. Dr. Gudrun Behm-Steidel III ZUSAMMENFASSUNG 60 Jahre nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges und der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft befin- det sich noch immer NS-Raubgut im Bestand deutscher Bibliotheken. In der vorliegenden Bachelorarbeit wird eine Übersicht zur Thematik „NS-Raubgut und Restitu- tion in Bibliotheken“ erarbeitet. Dies geschieht mit dem Ziel, im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit aufzuzeigen, wie diese Inhalte in die Ausbildung von Informationsfachleuten integriert werden können. Nach einer Einführung in den Themenkomplex erfolgt zunächst eine Statusermittlung des der- zeitigen Umgangs mit der Thematik innerhalb der Ausbildung von Informationsfachleuten an deutschen Hochschulen. Darauf aufbauend werden Vorlesungsinhalte erarbeitet, die sich für die Vermittlung in der Ausbildung eignen. Die Betrachtung möglicher Vermittlungsformen ist ebenfalls enthalten. Dawidowicz and the Restitution of Jewish Cultural Property NANCY SINKOFF1 In September of 1946, Lucy Schildkret, who later in life would earn renown under her married name, Lucy S. Dawidowicz,2 as an “inten- tionalist” historian of the Holocaust,3 sailed to Europe to work for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (the JDC, the Joint, or the AJDC) in its overseas educational department among Jewish refugees in displaced persons (DP) camps.4 She later recalled that the journey had filled her with foreboding.5 Schildkret was returning to a Europe 1.     Nazi-Confiscated Art Issues Dr. Jonathan Petropoulos PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, LOYOLA COLLEGE, MD UNITED STATES Art Looting during the Third Reich: An Overview with Recommendations for Further Research Plenary Session on Nazi-Confiscated Art Issues It is an honor to be here to speak to you today. In many respects it is the highpoint of the over fifteen years I have spent working on this issue of artworks looted by the Nazis. This is a vast topic, too much for any one book, or even any one person to cover. Put simply, the Nazis plundered so many objects over such a large geographical area that it requires a collaborative effort to reconstruct this history. The project of determining what was plundered and what subsequently happened to these objects must be a team effort. And in fact, this is the way the work has proceeded. Many scholars have added pieces to the puzzle, and we are just now starting to assemble a complete picture. Millionen von Büchern gelangten aus dem In- und Ausland unrechtmäßig in ihre Bestände, wo sie lange unbeachtet verblieben. Erst in den 1980er Jahren begann man in Bibliothekskreisen mit einer kritischen Ausei- nandersetzung der NS-Vergangenheit, die in den 90er Jahren durch politische Erklärun- gen und erste Rechercheprojekte weiter forciert wurde. Seitdem wurden die Bemühun- gen, das NS-Raub- und Beutegut aufzuspüren, es an die rechtmäßigen Eigentümer oder Erben zurückzuerstatten und die Projekte umfassend zu dokumentieren, stetig intensi- viert. Dennoch gibt es viele Bibliotheken, die sich an der Suche noch nicht beteiligt ha- ben. INTRODUCTION On 117 rolls of this microfilm publication, M1947, are reproduced the administrative records, photographs of artworks, and property cards from the Wiesbaden Central Collecting Point during the period 1945–52. The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives (MFAA) Section recovered Nazi-looted works of art and artifacts from various storage areas and shipped the objects to one of four U.S. central collecting points, including Wiesbaden. In order to research restitution claims, MFAA officers gathered intelligence reports, interrogation reports, captured documents, and general information regarding German art looting. The Wiesbaden records are part of the “Ardelia Hall Collection” in Records of United States Occupation Headquarters, World War II, Record Group (RG) 260.     Anne Rothfeld1 RETURNING LOOTED EUROPEAN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS: AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE OFFENBACH ARCHIVAL DEPOT, 1945–1948 In 1944, Pierce Butler wrote, “ever since libraries have existed, war has been one of the chief agencies of [their] annihilation.”2 The looting and destruction of cultural treasures during wartime is an established fact throughout Western history, including Greek and Roman times as well as during the Crusades, when empires stripped defeated nations of their cultural heritage. During the Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century, Napoleon had an army of art commissioners who were ordered to locate and seize valuable cultural property, including whole libraries, for transfer to France. But the systematic Nazi confiscation of European cultural treasures in the twentieth century was unique, as looting at- tained new ideological and methodological dimensions that furthered the Nazi goals of destroying whole peoples and cultures. Despite recent publicity on the restitution of Nazi stolen artworks, the seizure and destruction of European library collections receives little attention today. But this was certainly not the case just after the end of the war. Recognizing the massive looting that had transpired, the Allies set up the largest book restitution program in history, a program that can justly be described as the antithesis to the German plundering machine. In March 1946, the Allied Military occupation government of Germany established the Offenbach Archival Depot, and placed it under the supervision of the Monuments, Fine Arts, & Archives program (MFA&A), a branch of the Office of Military Government in Germany and Austria.
