Yaroslav Gorbachov Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Department of Linguistics, University of Chicago [email protected] Abstract As attested, the Slavic pantheon is rather well-populated. However, many of its nu- merous members are known only by their names mentioned in passing in one or two medieval documents. Among those barely attested Slavic deities, there are a few whose very existence may be doubted. This does not deter some scholars from articulating rather elaborate theories about Slavic mythology and cosmology. The article discusses two obscure Slavic deities, “Black God” and “White God,” and, in particular, reexamines the extant primary sources on them. It is argued that “Black God” worship was limited to the Slavic North-West, and “White God” never existed. Keywords Chernobog – Belbog – Belbuck – Tjarnaglófi – Vij – Slavic dualism Introduction A discussion of Slavic mythology and pantheons is always a difficult, risky, and thankless business. There is no dearth of gods to talk about. In the literature they are discussed with confidence and, at times, some bold conclusions about Slavic cosmology are made, based on the sheer fact of the existence of a par- ticular deity. In reality, however, many of the “known” Slavic gods are not much more than a bare theonym mentioned once or twice in what often is a late, un- reliable, or poorly interpretable document. The available evidence is undeni- ably scanty and the dots to be connected are spaced far apart. Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View
37 Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View Kay Muhr In this chapter I will discuss place-name connections between Ulster and Man, beginning with the early appearances of Man in Irish tradition and its association with the mythological realm of Emain Ablach, from the 6th to the I 3th century. 1 A good introduction to the link between Ulster and Manx place-names is to look at Speed's map of Man published in 1605.2 Although the map is much later than the beginning of place-names in the Isle of Man, it does reflect those place-names already well-established 400 years before our time. Moreover the gloriously exaggerated Manx-centric view, showing the island almost filling the Irish sea between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, also allows the map to illustrate place-names from the coasts of these lands around. As an island visible from these coasts Man has been influenced by all of them. In Ireland there are Gaelic, Norse and English names - the latter now the dominant language in new place-names, though it was not so in the past. The Gaelic names include the port towns of Knok (now Carrick-) fergus, "Fergus' hill" or "rock", the rock clearly referring to the site of the medieval castle. In 13th-century Scotland Fergus was understood as the king whose migration introduced the Gaelic language. Further south, Dundalk "fort of the small sword" includes the element dun "hill-fort", one of three fortification names common in early Irish place-names, the others being rath "ring fort" and lios "enclosure". -

Para ampliar esta diversidad, algunos esfuerzos tienden a revalorizar las lenguas regionales, incluso a nivel constitucional. Un caso representativo de esta tendencia es el bretón, lengua celta hablada en el oeste de Francia. En la región de Bretaña, existen varios movimientos político-culturales muy activos cuyo objetivo es oficializar la lengua bretona, extenderla y modificar su estatuto y su imagen en la sociedad francesa y bretona. Desde hace algunos lustros, se puede palpar los resultados de sus acciones; por ejemplo: el bretón en el sistema educativo y en los medios de comunicación y el bretón en el discurso político y el mundo de la cultura. Estos hechos marcan una cierta orientación; sin embargo, las lenguas regionales, particularmente el bretón, tienen dificultades para obtener una estabilidad y su futuro es incierto. RÉSUMÉ Du point de vue linguistique, la France est un pays très divers malgré la suprématie du français. Pour propager cette diversité, des tentatives cherchent à revaloriser les langues régionales, même au niveau constitutionnel. Un cas représentatif de cette tendance est le breton, langue celtique parlée à l’ouest de la France. Dans la région de Bretagne, il existe plusieurs mouvements politico-culturels très actifs dont l’un des objectifs consiste à officialiser la langue bretonne, la répandre et changer son statut et son image auprès des Français et des Bretons. -

In EBGR 1998 we have focused on new epigraphic finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, and epigraphic corpora, but we have also summarized a few archaeological studies which make extensive use of the epigraphic material; for the significant contribu tion of archaeology to the study of Greek religion the reader should consuIt the Chronique archéologique in Kernos. As in earlier issues we have not limited ourselves to epigraphy but have included a few references to important papyro logical sources (nOS 29, 134, 168, 181, 280, 300) and to the evidence provided by the documents in Linear B (nO 50). -

A la différence de ces deux derniers pays, il n'est pas « mono-polarisé » : l'influence de Quimper, tant sur le plan des emplois que sur celui des services, est contrebalancée par la présence de quatre pôles de service bien équipés situés sur le littoral, Concarneau, Douarnenez, Pont-l'Abbé et Quimperlé, ainsi que par le pôle d'emploi de Châteaulin au nord. Le rythme de croissance de la population s'est stabilisé depuis une vingtaine d'années à 0,2 % par an. La croissance du pays de Cornouaille est ralentie par un solde naturel (naissance-décès) en déficit croissant. En revanche, le solde migratoire (arrivées-départs) est positif et en augmentation. Mais il convient de souligner l’hétérogénéité de l’évolution démographique sur le territoire. -

Ten Thousand Eyes: The Story of Ἄργος Μυριωπός Alexander Nikolaev HE MYTH OF ARGUS was well known in antiquity, to judge from sixth- and fifth-century literature and art. Its T basic constituents are as follows: when Io was turned into a heifer by Zeus, the titan Argus was appointed by Hera as her guard, and while on this duty he was killed by Hermes.1 The most conspicuous and unusual feature of Argus is the number of his eyes, which in different sources ranges between three and several thousand. The purpose of this paper is to make a new suggestion regarding the origin of the motif of the myriad-eyed cowherd. 1. Let us remind ourselves of the relevant sources. In Aesch. Supp. the story of Io is treated in the stichomythia between the chorus of Danaids and Pelasgus, the king of Argos; Io’s guard is mentioned at 303–305, described as πανόπτης οἰοβουκόλος, “all-seeing cowherd of one [heifer].”2 A somewhat more de- tailed description is in [Aesch.] PV: in her monody Io calls Argus a “myriad-eyed cowherd” (568, µυριωπὸν … βούταν) and later an “earth-born herdsman, staring with his many eyes” (677–679, βουκόλος δὲ γηγενής … πυκνοῖς ὄσσοις δεδορκώς). Bacchylides, too, was familiar with the myth: in his poem about Io (19.19–25) he describes Argus as “looking every way with tireless eyes” (ὄµµασι βλέποντα πάντοθεν ἀκαµάτοις) 1 For variants of the myth of Io see L.
