Complete Index of Common Names: Supplement to Tropical Timbers of the World (AH 607) by Nancy Ross Preface Since it was published in 1984, Tropical Timbers of the World has proven to be an extremely valuable reference to the properties and uses of tropical woods. It has been particularly valuable for the selection of species for specific products and as a reference for properties information that is important to effective pro- cessing and utilization of several hundred of the most commercially important tropical wood timbers. If a user of the book has only a common or trade name for a species and wishes to know its properties, the user must use the index of common names beginning on page 451. However, most tropical timbers have numerous common or trade names, depending upon the major region or local area of growth; furthermore, different species may be know by the same common name. Herein lies a minor weakness in Tropical Timbers of the World. The index generally contains only the one or two most frequently used common or trade names. If the common name known to the user is not one of those listed in the index, finding the species in the text is impossible other than by searching the book page by page. This process is too laborious to be practical because some species have 20 or more common names. This supplement provides a complete index of common or trade names. This index will prevent a user from erroneously concluding that the book does not contain a specific species because the common name known to the user does not happen to be in the existing index. -

E-mail: [email protected] Resumo. – Frugivoria e dispersão de sementes por soldadinho (Antilophia galeata) em matas do Cerrado brasileiro. – Antilophia galeata é uma ave frugívora da família Pipridae que tem sido registrada como uma boa dispersora de sementes de diversas espécies vegetais do Cerrado. O objetivo do tra- balho foi determinar o comportamento alimentar de A. galeata para avaliar seu potencial de dispersão de sementes em três fragmentos florestais. Foram registradas a tática de captura de frutos, o tempo gasto, o número de frutos consumidos e a espécie do fruto. Capturas com rede neblina foram usadas para coleta de material defecado. Foi registrado o consumo de 16 espécies de plantas, sendo Rubiaceae e Melastomataceae, as famílias mais representativas. As táticas de captura de fruto em vôo foram as mais frequentes, sendo que foram consumidos 3,86 ± 1,52 frutos por minuto em cada visita e em 88% dos registros, os frutos foram engolidos inteiros. No conteúdo fecal foram identificados três morfotipos de sementes. Os dados permitem afirmar que A. galeata é uma espécie importante nas interações frugívoro-planta e na dispersão de sementes. Abstract. – The Helmeted Manakin (Antilophia galeata) is a frugivorous bird of the Pipridae family and has been registered as a good seed disperser for several plants species from Cerrado. -

Im Deutschen wird sie auch Stachelannone oder Sauersack genannt. Er wird unter normalen Bedingungen 8–12 Meter hoch. Die Blätter ähneln Lorbeerblättern und sitzen wechselständig an den Zweigen. Die Blüten bestehen aus drei Kelch- und Kronblättern, sind länglich und von grüngelber Farbe. Sie verströmen einen aasartigen Geruch und locken damit Fliegen zur Bestäubung an. Die Frucht des Guanábana ist eigentlich eine große Beere. Sie wird bis zu 40 Zentimeter lang und bis zu 4 Kilogramm schwer. In dem weichen, weißen Fruchtfleisch sitzen große, schwarze (giftige) Samen. Die Fruchthülle ist mit weichen Stacheln besetzt, welche die Überreste des weiblichen Geschlechtsapparates bilden. Trees or tree-like plants are defined here broadly as perennial, self-supporting plants with a total height of at least 5 m (without ascending leaves or inflorescences), and with one or several erect stems with a diameter of at least 10 cm. We continue our compilation of an updated list of all native Mexican tree species with the dicotyledonous families Asteraceae (36 species, 39% endemic), Leguminosae with its 3 subfamilies (449 species, 41% endemic), and Rubiaceae (134 species, 24% endemic). The tallest tree species reach 20 m in the Asteraceae, 70 m in the Leguminosae, and also 70 m in the Rubiaceae. The species-richest genus is Lonchocarpus with 67 tree species in Mexico. Three legume genera are endemic to Mexico (Conzattia, Hesperothamnus, and Heteroflorum). The appendix lists all species, including their original publication, references of taxonomic revisions, existence of subspecies or varieties, maximum height in Mexico, and endemism status.
