Burke An annotated list of the Curculionoidea (Coleoptem) (excluding Anthribidae, Platypodinae, and Scolytinae) is presented for the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas. The list includes species that occur in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Wigacy counties. Each of the 23S species in 97 genera is tteated according to its geographical range. Lower Rio Grande distribution, seasonal activity, plant associations, and biology. The taxonomic atTangement follows O' Brien &, Wibmer (I og2). A table of the species occuning in patxicular areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, such as the Boca Chica Beach area, the Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary, Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park, and the Falcon Dam area is included. -

Twenty-seven species are found in the Paleocene, 442 in the Eocene and 94 in the Oligocene. The greatest diversity of Curculionoidea is described from the Eocene of Europe and North America. The richest faunas are known from Eocene localities, Florissant (177 species), Baltic amber (124 species) and Green River formation (75 species). The family Curculionidae dominates in all Paleogene localities. Weevil species associated with herbaceous vegetation are present in most localities since the middle Paleocene. Brown Title of Study: Biodiversity of Bariditae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Conoderinae) in Mississippi Pages in Study: 262 Candidate for Degree of Master of Science A survey of Bariditae in Mississippi resulted in records of 75 species in 32 genera and included two undescribed species and 36 new state records. An additional two species were recognized as possibly occurring in Mississippi as well. Diagnoses for all of the genera and species in the state are provided and keys to the genera as well as all of the species were made. Species were found in every county within Mississippi and are representative of the Bariditae fauna of the southeastern United States. Open, prairie-like habitats and aquatic wetland habitats were the habitats with the highest biodiversity of Bariditae in the state. Species of Baris, Geraeus, Linogeraeus, and Odontocorynus, were found in the highest numbers and Linogeraeus and Sibariops were found to be the most speciose genera in the state. -

The mandible is unusual in having a convex, edentate inner face and exodontous mandible incisor-like structures on the outer face. -

The effect of flower angle on bat pollination of Mucuna urens (F. Papilionaceae) Laura Grieneisen Department of Biology, The College of William & Mary ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between bat pollination and flower angle in Mucuna urens (F. Papilionaceae). To determine the natural variation among M. urens, the angles of 100 M. urens flowers were measured with a protractor to the nearest 5o. The mean angle was -82.45o from the horizon, the mode was -90o, and the range was from -45o to -105o. Approximately one-third of the flowers were tied so that they opened at 90o greater than the natural angle, one-third were tied to open at 90o less than the natural angle, and one-third were left at the natural angle. Over several nights, the pollination status of 383 mature M. urens flowers was observed. More flowers than expected were pollinated at the natural angle and fewer flowers than expected were pollinated at the positive and negative angles. (X2 = 63.96, p<0.001, df = 2). This suggests that natural M. urens flower angles are more accessible to bats than other angles. RESUMEN El propósito de este investigación es examinar la relación entre la polinización por murciélagos y el ángulo de la flor en Mucuna urens (F. Papilionaceae). Para saber la variedad natural sobre M. urens, se midieron los ángulos de 100 M. urens flores con un transportador al grado cinco más cercano. El promedio del ángulo fue -82.45º del horizonte, la moda fue -90º, y el rango fue de -45º a -105º. -

K1P 6P4, CANADA;[email protected] 3Department of Recent Invertebrates, Virginia Museum of Natural History, 21 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, Virginia 24112; [email protected] ABSTRACT: One-hundred thirty-five taxa (130 identified to species), in at least 97 genera, of weevils (superfamily Curculionoidea) were documented during a 21-year field survey (1998–2018) of the George Washington Memorial Parkway national park site that spans parts of Fairfax and Arlington Counties in Virginia. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species. INTRODUCTION This study provides a preliminary list of the weevils of the superfamily Curculionoidea within the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) national park site in northern Virginia. -

A global perspective on the origins of agriculture: the importance of unconscious selection Thomas Kluyver Department of Animal and Plant Sciences A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2013 1 Acknowledgements My primary supervisor, Colin Osborne, has provided advice, encouragement and inspiration throughout my PhD. My supervisors in the Department of Archaeology, Glynis Jones and Mike Charles, have patiently helped me to get to grips with a field which I had never studied before this project. Mark Rees’ advice about statistics has also been invaluable. I am grateful to Irene Johnson, for her eminently practical help with growing all kinds of plants, and to Emily Mockford and Chris Bennett, for painstakingly dissecting beet seed capsules to weigh individual seeds. Katherine Haynes and Rebecca Crabtree weighed seed of modern garden vegetables for chapter 3, and that chapter also could not have been written without people and organisations around the world who shared their data with me, including Benoît Pujol (Laboratoire Évolution et Diversité Biologique, France), the Botanical Information Section at RBG Kew, the USDA National Genetic Resources Program, the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Peru, and EMBRAPA in Brazil. Over the last few years, I have enjoyed a warm, friendly and intellectually stimulating environment in Sheffield. It has been a pleasure to work with the people in Colin Osborne’s lab group, as well as the many others who I have got to know. A total of 344 specific and subspecific names are alphabetically recorded, for their original binomina or trinomina, and spellings. Later combinations and synonyms are mentioned, as well as the informa- tion of all the labels associated to the specimens. In order to assist future research, three further lists are added: 1. specimens deemed to be deposited at MACN but not found in the collection; 2. specimens labeled as types of species which descriptions have probably never been published (non available names); and 3. specimens of dubi- ous type status, because the information on the labels does not agree with that of the original publication.
