Abstract We recorded the diversity of fl owering and fruiting plants during one year of phenological study at Paucarillo Reserve located in the northeastern part of the Peruvian Amazon (3°41’ S, 72°24’ W). A total of 270 species from 59 families were recorded, of which 57% were represented by only one individual plant. Registramos un total de 270 especies en 59 familias, de las cuales el 57% son representadas solamente por 1 individuo. Las Arecaceae y Rubiaceae fueron las familias dominantes en este sitio. Palabras clave: fructifi cación de plantas, diversidad, bosque de tierra fi rme, noreste Perú, Ama- zonas. Introduction Th is paper documents the species diversity of plants that were phenologically active (i.e. fl owering and/or fruiting) during a Río Amazonas one year period at a site in the Peruvian Amazon that is mostly unstudied. To date, most botanical studies in the Peruvian Ama- zon have been concentrated at a few established research sites in southern Peru, e.g. Manu (Foster 1990, Pitman et al. 2002). http://sisbib.unmsm.edu.pe/BVRevistas/biologia/biologiaNEW.htm However, there has been detailed fl oristic surveys in northwes- N tern Peruvian Amazon in two sites near Iquitos at Allpahuayo- Mishana (Gentry 1988, Malhi et al. 2002) and at the Explorama lodges (Vásquez Martínez 1997), which are located 122,7 km west and 77 km north-west of the study site described here. Th is Río Orosa project was part of a larger project to assess the productivity of vertebrate-dispersed fruit at Paucarillo. Th is paper adds to our Santa Ursula growing pool of knowledge regarding the plant species diversity and distribution of Peru’s lowland Amazonian plants. Terra Firme Paucarillo Forest Forest Reserve Study site description Study site Our study was carried out in Paucarillo Reserve (3°41’ S, Loreto 72°24’ W), located in the Department of Loreto on the Rio Oro- Terra Firme Forest Río Amazonas sa (a southern tributary of the Amazon) (Fig. 1). Th is 500 hectare reserve encompasses primary igapo (black-water inundated Perú forest) and terra fi rme forest and is owned by Project Amazonas (http://www.projectamazonas.com/), a non-profi t organization based in Florida. Surrounding this reserve is primary forest that extends to the Brazilian border, so that the contiguous forest in Figure 1. Darwiniana, nueva serie 9(1): 39-54. Malpighiaceae constitutes a family of 77 genera and ca. 1300 species, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of both hemispheres. They are mainly diversified in the American continent and distributed in a wide range of habitats and altitudinal gradients. For this reason, this family can be a model plant group to ecological and biogeographical analyses, as well as evolutive studies. In this context, an analysis of distribution, richness, endemism and phylogenetic diversity of Malpighiaceae in natural regions and their altitudinal gradients was undertaken. Malpighiaceae are represented in Colombia by 34 genera and 246 species (19.1% of endemism). Thus, Colombia and Brazil (44 genera, 584 species, 61% of endemism) are the two richest countries on species of this family. The highest species richness and endemism in Colombia is found in the lowlands (0-500 m a.s.l.: 212 species, 28 endemics); only ten species are distributed on highlands (2500-3200 m a.s.l.). Of the Malpighiaceae species in Colombia, Heteropterys leona and Stigmaphyllon bannisterioides have a disjunct amphi-Atlantic distribution, and six other species show intra-American disjunctions.

ABSTRACT: The Brazilian state of Acre borders Peru and Bolivia to the west and south, and the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Rondônia to the north and east, respectively. The state is located within the lowlands of the western Amazon basin, adjacent to the foothills of the Andes, within a “megadiverse” region of the Brazilian Amazon basin. Despite its diversity, the region is still only poorly known in scientific terms, and is considered to be a priority for future biological surveys. Given this situation, the present study aims to contribute to the scientific knowledge of the avian fauna of southwestern Amazonia, by evaluating the following questions – (a) how many and which bird species occur in the state of Acre?; (b) how are these species distributed within the state?; and (c) what are the priority areas for new ornithological surveys within the state of Acre? My methodological procedures included (a) a wide literature search; (b) two years of field surveys, including observation records and the collection of voucher specimens; (c) map the distribution of avian taxa within the two main interfluvial regions (east and west of the Purus River) of the state; and (d) the identification of contact and possible hybridization zones, based on the distribution of parapatric sister taxa.

R. Anderson† The Neotropical genus Mezia (Malpighiaceae) comprises 15 species of lianas (except M. huberi W.R.Anderson, a shrub or small tree). All have multibranched, densely brown-sericeous inflorescences with the ultimate unit a 4-flowered umbel of bilaterally symmetrical flowers. The distinctive pair of large cymbiform bracteoles subtends a rudimentary pedicel and encloses the floral bud. The flowers contain elongate sepals, the lateral four biglandular, yellow petals, the posterior often splotched with red, a heteromorphic androecium, and a tricarpellate gynoecium. The three styles are all free; the posterior pair is lyrate in five species but erect in the others. The samaras havean orbicular to oblate lateral wing and a much smaller dorsal wing; in most species, additional winglets and/or crests are present between the lateral and dorsal wings. Only Mezia mariposa W.R.Anderson has butterfly-shaped samaras lacking additional ornamentation. Four new species are proposed: Mezia andersonii C.E.Anderson, M. bahiana C.E.Anderson, M. fanshawei C.E.Anderson and M. sericea C.E.Anderson. One variety is elevated to species level and provided with a new name, Mezia peruviana C.E.Anderson; a lectotype is chosen for Diplopterys involuta var. ovata Nied. E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out a collection of publications on NTFPs in Brazil, until 2019, available in the Scopus database, presenting a bibliometric review and the state of the art of this theme from the evaluation of these publications, discussing the challenges of Brazilian legislation on NTFPs. After screening the articles of interest, 196 documents were evaluated, in which they were observed institutions and authors, analyzing networks of citations and terms used, areas of forest sciences and sciences that encompass the most explored biomes and the most studied species. The results showed that the concern to research on NTFPs in Brazil began in the 1990s, with an increase in the number of publications over the years. Besides that, the research on NTFPs is multidisciplinary, with emphasis on the areas of Agricultural and Biological Sciences and Environmental Science.

Clement Received: 3 July 2009 / Accepted: 13 February 2010 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010 Abstract Throughout Brazilian Amazonia anthropogenic soils that are the product of pre-Columbian settlements are called Terra Preta de I´ndio (Indian Dark Earths, TPI). These soils are dramatically different from surrounding soils due to long-term human activity, but there is little information about how secondary forest succession is affected by these differences. We tested if community structure (density, richness and basal area), floristic composition and domesticated species’ richness and density were similar between TPI and non-anthropogenic soils (NAS) in 52 25 9 10 m secondary forest plots in different successional stages near three traditional communities along the middle Madeira River, Central Amazonia. We sampled 858 woody individuals on TPI (77 domesticated) and 1095 on NAS (27 domesticated); 550 understory palms on TPI (169 domesticated) and 778 on NAS (123 domesticated). We found 179 species on TPI (10 domesticated), 190 on NAS (8 domesticated), and 74 (25%) in both environments. Although community structure on TPI and NAS was fairly similar, they showed significantly distinctive floristic composi- tions, both for woody individuals and understory palms. The density and richness of domesticated species was significantly higher on TPI than on NAS for woody individuals, but not for palms. The intimate long-term association of TPI with human activity has lead to the formation of distinct secondary forests and has favored the concentration of domesticated populations of crop species.
