Taken as a whole, they reflect the cultur- al and economic history of the valleys traversed by the trains in a graphic and impressive way. A wide variety of types of both sacred and secular buildings are represented. The openness of this transit region to artistic influences from the South and North, West and East, and even from the Orient, is particularly tangible in the churches and their interiors.
