Cozzi 55, 20125 Milano (Italy) and INFN, Sezione Milano-Bicocca. 3 CNR-IFN,piazza L. da Vinci, 20132 Milano (Italy). *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Non-invasive, portable analytical techniques are becoming increasingly widespread for the study and conservation in the field of cultural heritage, proving that a good data handling, supported by a deep knowledge of the techniques themselves, and the right synergy can give surprisingly substantial results when using portable but reliable instrumentation. In this work, pigment characterization was carried out on twenty-one Leonardesque paintings applying in situ XRF and FORS analyses. In-depth data evaluation allowed to get information on the colour palette and the painting technique of the different authors and workshops. Particular attention was paid to green pigments (for which a deeper study of possible pigments and alterations was performed with FORS analyses), flesh tones (for which a comparison with available data from cross sections was made) and ground preparation.     Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper for King Francis I; a masterpiece in gold and silk CHÂTEAU DU CLOS LUCÉ PARC LEONARDO DA VINCI Exhibition from 7th June to 8th September 2019 THE VATICAN MUSEUMS THUS PAY TRIBUTE TO LEONARDO’S GENIUS An historic loan from the Vatican Museums Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums The Vatican Museums are taking part in the fifth-centenary celebrations of Leonardo da Vinci’s death during 2019 with various initiatives. This exhibition on the precious Vatican tapestry of The Last Supper at the Château de Clos Lucé in Amboise is perhaps the most representative of these but also of the multifaceted activities carried out today in the Vatican Museums, encompassing research, restoration and collaboration with various institutions at a range of levels. The papal museums thus pay tribute to Leonardo’s genius. It was a pleasure and an honour to enter into contact with the French institutions and thus resume a relationship that dates back to 1533, when the renowned tapestry, sumptuously woven in silk with silver and gold thread and a border of crimson velvet, was presented to Clement VII by François I of France on the occasion of the marriage of his son and heir Henry of Valois and the Pope’s niece Catherine de’ Medici. The ceremony was performed by Clement VII himself with all due pomp in Marseille in the autumn of 1533. The tapestry, whose origin and provenance have been the object of hypotheses and conjectures, is still so shrouded in mystery that it has even proved impossible to identify the workshop involved.

Meyer With arms outstretched and open palms the Madonna of Mercy in the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum fresco faces the viewer (fi g. 1). Hovering angels place a golden crown on her veiled head, and tend her bejewelled mantle, white with green lining, over the members of a confraternity of disciplinati.1 White mantled devotees, some with fl ails dangling from their wrists and slits in their robes revealing their fl esh tortured for the common good, gather under each of her arms, while a few representative members, men to her right, women to her left, kneel dressed in daily wear. Additional patrons, St. Peter on her right and St. Mary Magdalene on her left, fl ank the Madonna’s stately fi gure. Painted, signed and dated by Antonio Boselli in 1495, the fresco originally graced the apse of the parish church dedicated to Sts. Vincent and Alexander in Ponteranica (a suburb of Bergamo). Though a youthful work by a minor painter, it is a touching and fairly late representation of this Ur-Catholic theme, perhaps originally derived by Cistercians from numismatic sources.2 The fresco was noted in situ for the fi rst time by Cavacaselle in 1871. Cited by Thieme-Becker (1910) and Cavalcaselle (1871), it was featured by Toesca (1918) in his work dedicated to the Milanese palazzo of the Bagatti Valsecchi family, after which—although occasionally mentioned by some of today’s scholars—its presence in the house was forgotten until re-identifi ed by Angeleli and De Marchi (1975).
