Why save energy? Our energy needs rise strongly every year. According to data of Statistics Netherlands (CBS), energy consumption between 1950 and 2013 rose by about 4.5 percent every year. If we look at the price development of energy, we can see that the energy price also increases every year. There was not a small drop around 2010, but by now the price level is back to the highest level from 2009.

A large part of the energy costs of companies can be ascribed to climate control. In an average office building the HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, ) use around 50% of the total energy needs. If these costs are separated further, we can see that around 70% of the HVAC costs consist of energy costs for air filtering. The air filter system is one of the systems that consume the most energy.

Modern filters create a strong energy reduction You can probably see that reducing the energy needs of the air filtration represents a huge saving. And the savings only grow, because energy prices just keep rising.

To understand how you can realise this saving, we first have to explain something about the operation of air filters. To clean the air of a room, a ventilator in an air treatment cabinet (usually installed on the roof of a building or in a technical room) blows in air from outside. Before the air reaches its final destination, it is filtered by one or more air filters and, if required, heated.

The material and the efficiency of a filter determine which gases or particles are stopped. A filter, for example, is perfect for stopping gases and odours. A HEPA filter, on the other hand, even filters the most minuscule particles from the air, which makes it perfectly suited for clean rooms and hospitals. 5

Saving thousands of euros per month The material and the type of filter are main components in determining the initial air resistance. Simply put, the resistance determines the speed with which the ventilator in the air treatment cabinet should rotate to be able to deliver the right amount of air. Filter pollution has a strong negative effect on the air resistance. The higher the resistance, the harder the ventilator needs to work and the higher the energy consumption – and thus the energy costs. An increased air resistance is an important reason to replace an air filter. Modern efficient filters have a practically constant low air resistance, so energy consumption remains low during the entire life-span. The lower the resistance, the lower the energy costs.

CHAPTER 2 AIR POLLUTION REDUCES PRODUCTIVITY AND INCREASES SICK LEAVE Air pollution is everywhere – even inside and at the office. The annoying part is that you cannot see it. However, the effect of air pollution on people’s health is tremendous. It leads to reduced productivity and even a shorter life-span. Annually thousands of people die from the consequences of air pollution, and thousands more fall ill.

Because of that, air pollution is a theme that should be taken seriously. After all, employees spend much of their day in your workplace. By improving the quality of the air there, it is easy to contribute significantly to the wellbeing of your employees.

Gradation of particles

PM10 Particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 10 micrometres. These particles are often described as ‘coarse particles’ and contain of roads and industry as well as (0,01mm) particles created by ignition. Depending on their size, coarse particles may get stuck in the windpipe or in the bronchi.

PM2,5 Particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometres. These particles are described as fine particles and contain secondary aerosols and ignition particles. (0,0025mm) Fine particles may end up in alveoli.

PM0,1 Particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 0.1 micrometre are called ultra- fine particles. Ultra-fine particles are most dangerous because they could end up in a (0,0001mm) person’s bloodstream.

These epidemiological and toxicological data show that particulate matter, when inhaled, is harmful for a person’s health. This health damage mainly occurs as a result of ultra-fine particulate matter. The particles penetrate the lungs deepest and damage them most severely.

The huge consequences of particulate matter Most people breathe polluted air for all of their lives. Many people suffer lung diseases or cardiovascular problems at some point in their lives. Air pollution is part of the reason. Particulate matter enters the lungs when you breathe in, where they can cause harm. It might also cause the blood to become more viscous, raising the chance of heart attacks. In addition, scientists have discovered neurological effects of particulate matter, such as a negative influence on heart muscle functions. 9

According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), several thousands of people will live several days to several months shorter due to short-term exposure to a high concentration of particulate matter. Even if the concentration is below the European limits, health effects will be visible. 10

The Netherlands and Belgium do not meet the European guideline The air in the Netherlands and Belgium is among the most polluted in Europe. In many places the measured value of particulate matter is higher than the European norm. In the Netherlands and Belgium the concentration of particulate matter exceeds the limits, especially within 100 metres of busy motorways or within 50 metres of busy city streets. In the biggest municipalities in the Netherlands up to 10% of the population is exposed to an excessive concentration of particulate matter (2004).

HOW IS THE AIR QUALITY AROUND YOU? How is the air quality in your area? The RIVM, the GGD Amsterdam and the DCMR Environmental Services of Rijnmond have developed an app that shows the concentrations of particulate matter, ozone and nitrogen dioxide in around 75 areas in the Netherlands. In addition, the app describes the severity of the air pollution measured. You can also set an alarm value: if this value is exceeded, the app gives a signal. How do you contribute to the health of your employees? On average an employee spends about 70% to 90% of their time indoors. At home and at work the air quality often leaves much to be desired. If the air outside is polluted, the air inside usually is, too. This can lead to the (SBS). Almost three quarters of SBS cases can be ascribed to the ultra-fine particles in the air. Well-known symptoms are lethargy, concentration and airway issues, headaches, drowsiness, irritation of the skin or eyes, and exhaustion.
