Duffett was inaugurated as the ninth president of Eastern University on April 4, 2014 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Board members, students, alumni, faculty, staff, family, friends and delegates from over thirty institutions were present.     Made In B.C. – Volume II A History of Postsecondary Education in British Columbia B.C.’s Faith-Based Postsecondary Institutions Bob Cowin Douglas College April 2009 The little paper that keeps growing I had a great deal of fun in 2007 using some of my professional development time to assemble a short history of public postsecondary education in British Columbia. My colleagues’ interest in the topic was greater than I had anticipated, encouraging me to write a more comprehensive report than I had planned. Interest was such that I found myself leading a small session in the autumn of 2008 for the BC Council of Post Secondary Library Directors, a group that I enjoyed meeting. A few days after the session, the director from Trinity Western University, Ted Goshulak, sent me a couple of books about TWU. I was pleased to receive them because I already suspected that another faith-based institution, Regent College in Vancouver, was perhaps BC’s most remarkable postsecondary success. Would Trinity Western’s story be equally fascinating? The short answer was yes. Now I was hooked. I wanted to know the stories of the other faith-based institutions, how they developed and where they fit in the province’s current postsecondary landscape. In the ensuing months, I poked around as time permitted on websites, searched library databases and catalogues, spoke with people, and circulated drafts for review. A surprisingly rich set of historical information was available. I have drawn heavily on this documentation, summarizing it to focus on organizations rather than on people in leadership roles.

    Pentecostal Experience and Hermeneutics By: Roger Stronstad Writing about the Holy Spirit a century ago, the German theologian Hermann Gunkel contrasted the experience of the Spirit between the so-called primitive church of apostolic times and the church of his own day. Of the experience of the Spirit in the Apostolic Church he observed: “At issue are concrete facts, obvious to all, which were the object of daily experience and without further reflection were directly experienced as effected by the Spirit.”l But what was true of the primitive church’s daily experience of the Spirit was not true of the church in Gunkel’s own day. He admits: We who live in a later age and do not as a matter of course have analogous experiences on which to draw can only grasp the primitive, apostolic view of the Spirit by proceeding from his activities as reported to us and by attempting to conceive the Spirit as the power calling forth these activities.2 Thus, Gunkel sees the church of his day to be handicapped in its ability to understand the apostolic witness to the Holy Spirit because it lacked any analogous experience of the Spirit. In the century between the time when Gunkel wrote and the present the modern Pentecostal movement was born, and in the 20th century millions of Christians now as a matter of course do have analogous experiences on which to draw for understanding the primitive church’s experience of the Holy Spirit.     Church and Community Profile 2020-2021 Gateway Community CRC Profile Our HISTORY Gateway was founded in 1950 by Dutch immigrants who after many years of attending worship services across the border in Sumas, Washington had the desire to establish their own church in the community of Abbotsford. At its beginning Gateway was known as First Christian Reformed Church of Abbotsford. The congregation consisted of 28 families and quickly grew to over 200 families within the first 10 years. In 2002 the name was changed to Gateway Community CRC since our location at that time on McCallum Rd was considered the southern “Gateway” into Abbotsford, and now at our current location we’ve become the northern “Gateway”. Over the years Gateway daughtered three CRC churches in the com- munity of Abbotsford. VISION and MISSION Gateway’s vision is: “Gateway CRC is to be a healthy, growing, and diverse family of God expressing the good news of God’s Kingdom that transforms lives in our church, in our city, and in our world.“ Gateway’s mission is: “Helping People to Love and Serve Jesus.” WORSHIP Gateway believes that Spirit-directed and heartfelt worship honours God and draws us into His presence. The worship services are contemporary and have a focus of biblical preaching that challenge listeners to holy living. Of which 405 people are confessing members, 258 members are under the age of 18.
