Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

Anemone:The name of the plant is directly linked to the well known ancient erotic myth of Adonis and Aphrodite (Venus). It has been inspired great poets like Ovidius or, much later, Shakespeare, to compose hymns dedicated to love. According to this myth, while Adonis was hunting in the forest, the ex- lover of Aphrodite, Ares, disguised himself as a wild boar and attacked Adonis causing him lethal injuries. Aphrodite heard the groans of Adonis and rushed to him, but it was too late. Aphrodite got in her arms the lifeless body of her beloved Adonis and it is said the she used nectar in order to spray the wood. The mixture of the nectar and blood sprang a beautiful flower. However, the life of this 1 beautiful flower doesn’t not last. When the wind blows, makes the buds of the plant to bloom and then drifted away. This flower is called Anemone because the wind helps the flowering and its decline. Adonis:It would be an omission if we do not mention that there is a flower named Adonis, which has medicinal properties. According to the myth, this flower is familiar to us as poppy meadows with the beautiful red colour. (Adonis blood). Greek Mythology #12: LEDA & THE SWAN by Joy Journeay Leda was the beautiful queen of Sparta. She was the daughter of an Aetolian king and the wife of a king of Sparta (although it is noted that there are five different versions of her parentage). She was a contemporary of Hercules, and her sons were part of the quest of the Argonauts. Leda became the mother of Helen of Troy and the twins, Castor and Pollux. However, we know her best on buttons from the story of her seduction by Zeus. Zeus admired Leda and deviously seduced her. While disguised as a swan, Zeus arranged to be in danger as he was pursued by an eagle. Leda embraced the swan to protect it from the eagle, and Zeus had the opportunity to consummate the Jasperware set in metal with prong set seduction. paste border. Medium. Division I. Phoenix, the instructor of Achilles, tries to persuade Achilles to protect the ships of Achaeans during his speech. At the end of his speech, Phoenix tells Achilles about the story of Meleager which serves as a warning about waiting too long to fight the Trojans. -

The Prince and the Pancratiast: Persian-Thessalian Relations in the Late Fifth Century B.C. John O. Hyland EAR THE END of the fifth century B.C. the famous Thes- salian pancratiast Poulydamas of Skotoussa traveled to Nthe Achaemenid court at the invitation of Darius II. Scholars have noted the visit as an instance of cultural inter- action, but Persia’s simultaneous involvement in the Pelopon- nesian War suggests the possibility of diplomatic overtones. A political purpose for Poulydamas’ travel would be especially at- tractive given the subsequent cooperation between Darius’ son, Cyrus the Younger, and a cabal of Thessalian guest-friends. These episodes may be linked as successive steps in the restora- tion of the old xenia between Xerxes and Thessalian leaders, dormant since 479. By examining what Persian and Thessalian elites stood to gain from renewing their old partnership, we can shed new light on an under-appreciated dimension of Graeco- Persian political relations. Philomathes Two Sides of the Dice: Analyzing Two Domains of Dionysus in Greek Polytheism T he study of religion in ancient Greece is complicated by the fact that, unlike modern world religions with ancient roots, there is no “holy doctrine” to which scholars can refer. Although they shared a complex pantheon of gods, ancient Greek city- states were never a unified political empire; instead of a globalized dogma, religion was localized within each polis, whose inhabitants developed their own unique variations on “Greek” religious rituals and beliefs.1 The multiplex natures of ancient Greek gods compounds the problem; it is a monumental task to study all aspects of all deities in the Greek world. As a result, scholarship often focuses solely on a single popular aspect or well-known cult of a god or goddess — such as Apollo Pythios of Delphi or Athena Parthenos of Athens, neglecting other facets of the gods’ cult and personality.2 Greek religion, 1 As Jon D.
