The Magazine for Alumni and Friends of Campbellsville University A Word from the President… November 2011

Dear Alumni and Friends: The fall 2011 semester has been a season of continuing progress at Campbellsville University as we work hard to provide quality Christian higher education for our students. Now in her 105th year, CU’s mission has never been more important as we daily go about the task of preparing Christian servant leaders and bringing Christ-centered education, in an atmosphere of excellence and diversity, to our students through innovation, improved facilities, and employment of dedicated faculty, staff, and coaches. This issue of the Campbellsvillian includes The President’s Report for fiscal year 2010-2011, which ended June 30, 2011. The report has Vision 2025 as the theme, and we have shown pictures Dr. Michael V. Carter and improvements that reflect our goals in Vision 2025. A few highlights from the fall semester merit mention here, and are discussed in more detail in the articles following this introductory letter. Total enrollment has reached more than 3,500 students—our 23rd consecutive semester of record enrollment. CU has moved from classification as a regional college to being a regional university—resulting in being ranked number 71 in the South among the best regional universities by U.S.News & World Report. This is seen as a confirmation of the move made by the Board of Trustees in 1996 when Campbellsville College became Campbellsville University. It is also part of our Vision 2025: Preparing Christian Servant Leaders blueprint for the future—to become a premier Christian university in America. CU has been named once again to America’s Best Christian Colleges, one of the nation’s military friendly schools by G.I. Jobs magazine, and as a Champion of Character institution by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. These external recognitions affirm the growing reputation and recognition that CU is receiving nationally. As I prepare this letter, several projects are on my mind—we must continue to have new and improved facilities in order to attract the students in a very competitive higher education arena. New facilities that are on our mind include: School of Business and Economics building, new wellness center, Alumni Park, additional Dr. Michael V. Carter pays for a T-shirt from Alena Maggard, president gymnasium space for new athletic teams and intramurals, of Kappa Delta Phi, at the School of Education booth. First Lady Debbie additional residential units for a growing student Carter is at left and Dr. Carolyn Garrison, professor of education, is at right. population, expanded regional center facilities (especially (CU Photo by Naranchuluu Amarsanaa) in Somerset in the near future), and ongoing upgrade of classrooms and current facilities. We are researching the development of new academic programs in allied health and other areas of study designed to meet the changing demands of the world. And student financial aid, via your support of the Scholarship Fund and endowed scholarships, is essential for a private university, such as CU, to remain competitive. We need your continued prayers and support as we move forward. Funds must be raised for all the above projects, programs, and scholarship assistance. Thank you for your faithful support and for remaining loyal to Campbellsville University. May God continue to bless Campbellsville University and guide us in all that we are doing in this place.

Most cordially,

Michael V. Carter, President

Campbellsville University “Where there is no vision, the peoplePr perish.”esiden – tProverbs’s rep 29:18aort 2011(KJV)

NOVEMBER 2011 Dear Alumni and Friends:

This President’s Report outlines the progress made during the 2010-2011 year ending June 30, 2011. The past year, our 104th year of Christian higher education, was a very successful time in the history of Campbellsville University. We began to witness the implementation of portions of Vision 2025: Preparing Christian Servant Leaders (Vision 2025) which is the official blueprint for the future adopted by the CU Board of Trustees in August 2009. This report highlights a number of areas in which we are progressing in the implementation of Vision 2025 goals. A primary goal of Vision 2025 is for Campbellsville University to become one of America’s premier Christian universities. This will be accomplished by: integrating our faith and academic learning; preparing Christian servant leaders in an environment of academic excellence, character development, diversity and lifelong learning; offering new academic programs that are in high demand and reflect the Christian ethic of service to others; raising the level of funds that are needed to meet these challenging goals; growing the regional footprint of CU in Kentucky and beyond; and providing excellence in student facilities and the learning environment. During 2010-2011, we were able to raise a total of $6.1 million – compared to $6.0 million the year before. The number of donors increased from 1,825 to 1,841. We are gratified by the increasing number of individuals, churches, President Michael V. Carter businesses and corporations, foundations, and agencies who are providing financial support to Campbellsville University. We must continue to increase the number of donors, and the amount of funds raised annually, in order to fulfill the goals “Where there is set forth by Vision 2025. Thank you for your faithful prayers and support. Together, no vision, the we are making a difference in the lives of the students, of diverse backgrounds and experiences, who are finding their people perish.” calling at Campbellsville University.

Clay Hill Memorial Forest is also a huge part of the stewardship of Campbellsville University. Dr. Gordon Weddle, professor of biology, far right, and Dr. Richie Kessler, assistant professor of biology and environmental studies program coordinator, second from left, give a tour of Clay Hill to Ben Lowe, left, author of “Green Revolution: Coming Together to Care for Creation” and Terry Cook, state director for The Nature Conservancy in Kentucky, not pictured. Alicia Bosela, instructor in biology and assistant director of Clay Hill Memorial Forest, is in center.

Campbellsville University is always making changes, and the lobby of Broadway Hall was a part of the most recent transforma- tions that the university has completed. The blue sofas were replaced by leather ones, and new furniture was bought and placed in the lobby. Hardwood floors were laid also. The new look gives the lobby a clean and comforting atmosphere.

By Christina Kern, assistant editor By Joan C. McKinney, editor Remember when these were scenes on campus? Guess who is taking a break in this photo? There was a Valentine Party in 1962, and Dr. and Mrs. Ralph RememberTesseneer walked hand in hand in frontWhen? of the Administration Guess Who? Building. Students were lodged in the Kentucky Central Hotel, which was a men’s residence hall.

We hope you have fond memories of “those days” at Campbellsville University!

He was decorating for a Homecoming event in the Powell Athletic Center.

The person guessing correctly will win a Campbellsville University T-shirt.

We stumped practically everyone with our first “Guess What?” in the August 2011 issue. A Valentine Party in 1962. We chose some physical sites on campus, and the winner was Amber Jinnett, a 2010 graduate of CU. The answers were: picture 1—the underside of the Clock/Clarion on campus; picture 2—the gazebo outside of the Gosser Fine Arts Center; and picture 3— a cooling unit outside of North Hall.

Send your guess for this issue’s “Guess Who?” to Joan McKinney at jcmckinney@camp- bellsville.edu or to Joan McKinney, Camp- bellsville University, UPO 787, 1 University Dr. Ralph Tesseneer and Laura Drive, Campbellsville, Ky. 42718. Tesseneer walk hand in hand in front of the Administration Building in December 1996. The names of those guessing correctly within (CU Photo by Michelle Towles) 10 days after we receive the Campbellsvillian in our mailbox will be put in a hat, and the winner will be drawn at random.

Good luck!
