Luca Seidita leapt to his death from a cliff after receiving word from the Vatican that he could not be ordained a priest. He left behind a note saying: "I wanted to become a priest and all my life was devoted to that." Bishop Giovanni Scanavino of Orvieto denied rumors that Seidita had been judged unfit because he is homosexual. But he said that there were "some issues" involving the deacon's friends. Roman Catholic Church gets court's approval to move clergy-training trust funds into compensation for badly-trained clergy.] Times & Transcript BY KRIS MCDAVID, ~ Dec 01, 2010 BATHURST, CANADA - A judge in Miramichi has ruled that the Diocese of Bathurst can use 21 trust funds intended to train future members of the Roman Catholic priesthood in order to compensate victims of sexual abuse. Court of Queen's Bench Justice Fred Ferguson released his decision on Monday that a major portion of the church's trusts, which are valued at about $4.3-million, can be allocated to the 35 people who have come forward claiming abuse at the hands of priests. The ruling states that $1.5 million of the trust funds be retained by the church for the initial intended purpose. The victims advocacy group SNAP, the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, drew attention to the assertion after the archdiocese posted a statement on its web site clarifying what it said was errors in media reports the previous day. Among them, it said that the motion was filed by Sklba's personal attorney and not the archdiocese. In an attempt to refute that, SNAP on Wednesday disseminated a page from the motion that says: "For all the reasons stated above, the Archdiocese respectfully requests that the Court grant its motion for a protective order." Attorney Patrick W. Brennan said he sent a letter to the court today changing the reference from "the Archdiocese" to "Bishop Sklba." US $500k spent on lawyers and courts for Fr Thomas Graham.] Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, Statement by Barbara Dorris, outreach Director, 314 862 7688, [email protected] , ~ Dec 01, 2010 ST. LOUIS (MO) - It's tempting to assume that a newer bishop will handle clergy sex cases better than the older bishop did. But that's not always true. We urge St. Louis Catholics to be vigilant, not complacent, about the safety of kids within the church, no matter who holds the top spots in the archdiocesan hierarchy. RICE PROMOTED More than 50 St. Louis priests are proven, admitted or credibly accused child sex offenders. In none of these cases, civil or criminal, have we seen any evidence that Rice ever did anything to call police, notify parishioners, warn parents or protect kids in any way. In none of these cases, as best we can tell, did Rice ever voice any dissent with or objection to a single callous, reckless or deceptive move by his supervisors in the archdiocese. In one case, Rice testified as a character witness at a criminal trial for Fr. Thomas Graham. Graham was convicted of molesting a boy. (Later, that conviction was overturned on a technicality - the statute of limitations.) Rice stayed silent when then-Archbishop Raymond Burke spent $500,000 of church funds to keep a convicted child predator free while appeals were filed on behalf of Graham. • Clergy Sex Abuse of Females Complicates Intricate Issue
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests Female Victims Female Victims of Clergy Abuse Recent stories of interest BACK TO: Female victims Clergy sex abuse of females story list complicates intricate issue By MATT STEARNS and JUDY L. THOMAS The Kansas City Star - July 12, 2002 They are the forgotten victims of clergy sex abuse, neglected by the media and overlooked by church activists. Yet many experts estimate that females -- both girls and women -- constitute a sizable number of all victims of sexual abuse by priests. The public focus of the sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church has been on predatory homosexual behavior by rogue priests, and the subsequent cover-up by some bishops. As a result, female victims say they feel frustrated and isolated as they attempt to deal with the emotional aftermath of sex abuse. And, others say, dealing with those victims presents a unique set of problems for the church -- and for those looking to blame the crisis on gay priests. "They were totally unwilling to really acknowledge that what happened to me was really terrible," said Corinne Corley, a Kansas City attorney who said she was sexually abused by a priest in the Archdiocese of St. Louis when she was a teen-ager in the 1970s. "Because of the heterosexual factor, they're going to assume that you were Lolita, a temptress." "The double standard is terrible," agreed Gary Schoener, a clinical psychologist in Minneapolis who has handled hundreds of clergy abuse cases. "It is presumed that the abuse of young boys is more deviant and therefore more harmful." Financial settlements involving female victims tend to be smaller than settlements for male victims, Schoener said.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION In August 2002 Mr George Birmingham SC presented a preliminary report on child sexual abuse involving Roman Catholic priests in the Diocese of Ferns to the Minister for Health and Children. Mr Birmingham had been asked by the Minister to investigate the background to allegations of child sexual abuse in the Diocese with a view to recommending an appropriate form and Terms of Reference for an Inquiry to inquire into the issue. As recommended by Mr Birmingham, the Minister for Health and Children established a non-statutory private inquiry to investigate allegations or complaints of child sexual abuse which were made against clergy operating under the aegis of the Diocese of Ferns. The Ferns Inquiry was established as a three-person team under the chairmanship of Mr Justice Francis D Murphy, formerly of the Supreme Court. The two other members of the Inquiry are: Dr Helen Buckley, senior lecturer in the Department of Social Studies, Trinity College, Dublin; and Dr Laraine Joyce, deputy director of the Office for Health Management. The Inquiry was formally established by the Minister for Health and Children on 28 March 2003. Counsel to the Inquiry was Mr Sean Ryan SC and Mr Declan Doyle SC. Mr Ryan was nominated as a Judge of the High Court in September 2003 and was succeeded by Mr Finbarr Fox SC. The Secretrary to the Inquiry was Mrs Marian Shanley BCL Solicitor. Solicitor to the Inquiry was Mr Joseph O’Malley BCL LLM Solicitor, of Hayes Solicitors, Lavery House, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2. The Inquiry was assisted in its work by the following people: Stephen O’Brien BA, Administrative Officer of the Department of Health and Children; David Begley, Clerical Officer of the Department of Health and Children.

  • A Report on the Developments in Women's Ministry in 2018
A Report on the Developments in Women’s Ministry in 2018 WATCH Women and the Church A Report on the Developments in Women’s Ministry 2018 In 2019 it will be: • 50 years since women were first licensed as Lay Readers • 25 years since women in the Church of England were first ordained priests • 5 years since legislation was passed to enable women to be appointed bishops In 2018 • The Rt Rev Sarah Mullaly was translated from the See of Crediton to become Bishop of London (May 12) and the Very Rev Viv Faull was consecrated on July 3rd, and installed as Bishop of Bristol on Oct 20th. Now 4 diocesan bishops (out of a total of 44) are women. In December 2018 it was announced that Rt Rev Libby Lane has been appointed the (diocesan) Bishop of Derby. • Women were appointed to four more suffragan sees during 2018, so at the end of 2018 12 suffragan sees were filled by women (from a total of 69 sees). • The appointment of two more women to suffragan sees in 2019 has been announced. Ordained ministry is not the only way that anyone, male or female, serves the church. Most of those who offer ministries of many kinds are not counted in any way. However, WATCH considers that it is valuable to get an overview of those who have particular responsibilities in diocese and the national church, and this year we would like to draw attention to The Church Commissioners. This group is rarely noticed publicly, but the skills and decisions of its members are vital to the funding of nearly all that the Church of England is able to do.
