Former State Representative Ellis Levin was one of the first Illinois politicians we could count on as a reliable ally for Chicago’s LGBTQ communities. Besides being an early sponsor of Illinois’ first bills to outlaw discrimination because of sexual orientation, Ellis sponsored hate crimes legislation to force law enforcement to take attacks on our communities seriously. When the AIDS crisis hit in the 1980s, Ellis was again our point person. He sponsored the AIDS Confidentiality Act; he supported funds for treatment and public awareness; and he backed laws ensuring long-term care for people with AIDS. Bill Kelley and Ellis Levin In 1977, Ellis became the state’s first elected official to march with us in the Pride Parade. For these and many other reasons, Ellis was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame as a Friend of the Community. Ellis had the guts to stand up for us when it was not popular. Through the Hall of Fame, residents of Chicago and the world are made aware of the contributions of Chicago’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and the communities’ efforts to eradicate bias and discrimination. With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, the Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues (now the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. The Hall of Fame recognizes the volunteer and professional achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, their organizations and their friends, as well as their contributions to the LGBT communities and to the city of Chicago.

A proud veteran, former law enforcement official and dedicated public servant, Larry faithfully served the needs and concerns of fellow citizens throughout his life. As the City liaison to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities, he played an invaluable role in fostering cooperation, tolerance and understanding. As a pioneering State Representative, Larry was a strong and effective voice for his constituents and inspired us all with his selfless dedication to helping those in need. I send my condolences to the family and friends of Larry and hope you find comfort in his memory and the love he shared with you. On March 5, the California Supreme Court will begin to hear arguments against Prop 8. In order to high- light the importance of the upcoming trial, Gay Liberation Network (GLN) and Join the Impact Chicago organized a Valentine’s Day action at the Cook County Marriage License Bureau, 50 W. Washington. This began with a traditional picket outside the building and ended with a sit-in in- side that resulted in the arrest of seven marriage activists. One man, with a sign that said, “Obama, Don’t 4Get,” said that he was there because “[w]e don’t the same protections that other couples have.
