DEVELOPMENT OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS: 1855-1945
Manhattan, Kansas is located in the north-central region of the state and is the county seat of Riley County. It is located in a bowl-shaped valley immediately north of the Kansas River near its confluence with the Big Blue River. Riley County received its name directly from the military post named after General Benjamin Riley1 located approximately twelve miles southwest of Manhattan’s original settlement area.
