W. E. B. Du Bois, “The Conservation of Races” The American Negro has always felt an intense personal interest in discussions as to the origins and destinies of races: primarily because back of most discussions of race with which he is familiar, have lurked certain assumptions as to his natural abilities, as to his political, intellectual and moral status, which he felt were wrong. He has, consequently, been led to deprecate and minimize race distinctions, to believe intensely that out of one blood God created all nations, and to speak of human brotherhood as though it were the possibility of an already dawning to- morrow. Nevertheless, in our calmer moments we must acknowledge that human beings are divided into races; that in this country the two most extreme types of the world’s races have met, and the resulting problem as to the future relations of these types is not only of intense and living interest to us, but forms an epoch in the history of mankind. It is necessary, therefore, in planning our movements, in guiding our future development, that at times we rise above the pressing, but smaller questions of separate schools and cars, wage- discrimination and lynch law, to survey the whole question of race in human philosophy and to lay, on a basis of broad knowledge and careful insight, those large lines of policy and higher ideals which may form our guiding lines and boundaries in the practical difficulties of every day. For it is certain that all human striving must recognize the hard limits of natural law, and that any striving, no matter how intense and earnest, which is against the constitution of the world, is vain. -

The Jews – Teachers of the Nazis?
Jan-Erik Ebbestad Hansen (Oslo) über: The Jews – Teachers of the Nazis? Anti-Semitism in Norwegian Anthroposophy Abstract This article is an investigation, from the perspective of the history of ideas, of the view that central Norwegian anthroposophists took of Jews and Judaism from the interwar period to the period shortly after the Second World War. A central element of the investigation is the demonstration that Norwegian anthroposophists had an anti- Semitic understanding of Judaism and that they considered Judaism as the negative counterpart to Germanentum and Deutschtum. An introductory contextualizing section of this paper gives an account of Rudolf Steiner’s definition of Judaism and of the decisive influence he had on the Norwegian anthroposophists. Steiner’s view of Jews is defined as assimilationist anti-Semitism. Secondly, there will be a description of the principal characteristics of the Norwegian Germanentum and anti-Semitism in this period.1 Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel untersucht aus ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive die Sichtweise, die norwegische Anthroposophen in der Zeit zwischen den Weltkriegen bis kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auf Juden und das Judentum hatten. Ein zentraler Punkt dieser Untersuchung ist zu zeigen, dass norwegische Anthroposophen eine antisemitische Auffassung vom Judentum hatten und Judentum als negatives Gegenstück zum Germanentum oder Deutschtum verstanden. Im einführenden Abschnitt zur Kontextualisierung wird neben Rudolf Steiners Definition von Judentum der große Einfluss geschildert, den er auf die norwegischen Anthroposophen hatte. Steiners Sicht auf Juden wird als assimilationistischer Antisemitismus definiert. Zweitens werden die grundlegenden Züge des norwegischen Germanentums und Antisemitismus dieser Zeit beschrieben. In the establishment of Nazi ideology and the practice of its principles, Hitler drew upon an old, extensive and specific genre of animalizing language. Hitler’s regime skillfully employed contemporary and diverse modes of discourse to dehumanize and devastate the Jewish people. By juxtaposing traditional anti-Semitic beliefs with ideals of Aryan superiority, the Nazis were able to expand and strengthen pre-existing anti- Semitism whilst reaffirming Germany as the ultimate example of evolutionary progression. Integral to Hitler’s success was the use of animal imagery and its respective connotations, associations and evocations. Throughout Hitler’s regime, the term “animal” remained without an exact or precise definition; the ambiguous definition of “animal” allowed for multiple applications – both destructive and constructive. -

Wanneer ik de afgelopen jaren vertelde waar ik mee bezig was, vroeg menigeen verbaasd en nieuwsgierig hoe ik tot dit onderwerp gekomen was. Vervolgens voelden mensen die de oorlog min of meer bewust hebben meegemaakt zich vrijwel altijd geroepen mij deelgenoot te maken van hun herinneringen aan de oorlogsjaren. Leeftijdgenoten - ik werd geboren in 1955 - reageerden opvallend vaak ongeduldig of zelfs geprikkeld. Sommigen van hen legden me uit dat ook niet-joden geleden hebben onder de oorlog. Anderen meenden dat er inmiddels wel genoeg over het lot van de joden was geschreven. Nu krijgt elke contemporain historicus te maken met uitgesproken meningen en opvattingen van tijdgenoten. Maar het lijkt me duidelijk dat het onderwerp van dit boek uitzonderlijke reacties teweegbrengt. Wat Bram de Swaan in 1965 opmerkte over de respons op Pressers Ondergang, geldt kennelijk nog steeds en ook voor mijn boek: de mensen zitten er erg mee. Dit verklaart misschien dat mij behalve naar mijn motivatie verder nauwelijks iets werd gevraagd. Mijn belangstelling voor de nasleep van de jodenvervolging dateert uit mijn studietijd. In 1987 schreef ik een doctoraalscriptie over de repatriëring van Nederlandse overlevenden uit de Duitse concentratiekampen. Nadien ben ik me blijven verdiepen in de gevolgen van de perfect georganiseerde massamoord, vooral op het leven en denken van de overlevenden. -

ers'oonlijkheden Doeko Bosscher Abel Ja ob Herzberg >- In aeze aflevering van Persoonlijkheden verklaart Doeko Bosscher zijn bewondering voor het werk van de Joodse schrijver Abel Herzberg en diens wil om de mens in al r- zijn facetten te begrijpen. Voor wie koestert een mens fascinatie? In mijn geval voor iemand die ogen opent en tot denken aanzet; tot het heroverwegen van standpunten. Omdat hij een origineel denker was, in alles wat hij schreef goed voor een paar nieuwe gezichtspunten, koester ik hoge achting voor Abel J. Herzberg. Mijn respect geldt voor hem als auteur (toneel, poëzie en proza) en als rolmodel voor iedereen die, op zoek naar de kern van het begrip humani teit, in waarheid wll proberen te leven. Dergelijke lieden zijn dun gezaaid. Hun bijzondere talent, hun genie, blijkt mee tal pas in omstandigheden die hen dwingen het beste naar boven te laten komen. Herzberg zou zelf de eerste zijn, zoals hierna wel blijkt, om het belang van omstandigheden voor de ontdekking van zijn eigen gaven te erkennen. Hij was een typische structuralist, die mens en context uit elkaar hield. De mens is niet; hij wordt gemaakt. Herzberg was naast een heleboel andere dingen ook zionist, een woord dat bij mij (kind van de jaren zestig) altijd negatieve associaties wekte vanwege de vernedering van de Palestijnen, die met de nederzettingenpolitiek op de Westbank gepaard ging. Zionisme, dat was dan wel oorspronkelijk een reactie op allerlei kwalijke vormen van discriminatie en vervolging en was als zodanig goed te begrijpen, maar stelde het in de latere praktijk niet het ene onrecht voor het andere kwaad in de plaats? Ik vond (en vind) het bestaansrecht van Israël binnen veilige grenzen even vanzelfsprekend als de aanspraak van de Palestijnen op erkenning van hun rechten. -

“Poor devils” of the Camps Dutch Jews in Theresienstadt, 1943–19451 Anna Hájková nne Frank, the young diarist from Amsterdam, may be the best-known victim of the Holocaust.2 Her diary breaks off with the capture of the Jews hiding at 263 Prinsengracht Street, and, with the termination of the diary, Anne Frank Ais as good as dead. Anne’s incarceration in Auschwitz-Birkenau and later in Bergen-Belsen, where she died seven months after her arrest, are often presented as a footnote to her story.3 This treatment of Anne Frank’s last seven months is symptomatic of the story of the Dutch Jews once they were deported outside of the Netherlands; this topic has been widely neglected in large parts of the historiography of the Holocaust of Dutch Jewry.4 Many scholars of the 1 This article was a long time in the making, and I am extremely grateful to many colleagues and friends for their help, advice, support, and reading and commenting along the way. Three years ago, when Robert Jan van Pelt, an architectural and Holocaust historian at the University of Waterloo, asked me whether I would translate the diary of David Koker, I had never heard of David or his diary, or so I told him. I subsequently found out that I was wrong. Both had come within my ken four decades earlier, but I had taken no notice. In the early 1970s I read the University of Amsterdam historian Jacob (Jacques) Presser’s two-volume work Ondergang (1965), the history of the persecution and destruction of the Jews of the Netherlands 2 History of Intellectual Culture, 2012/13 during the years of German occupation. (Presser’s work was translated into English by Arnold Pomerans and appeared in an abridged version as Ashes in the Wind in the United Kingdom in 1968, and as The Destruction of the Dutch Jews in the United States in 1969.) Presser, who in the late 1930s had taught David at the Vossiusgymnasium, an elite secondary school in Amsterdam, mentions his former pupil and the diary more than once. Later I must have come across David’s name in Louis de Jong’s multi-volume history of the Netherlands during the war (Het koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de tweede wereldoorlog, 1969ff.), which I began to read in 1971.
