The second day will have each of the companies present tell the story of how their business was founded and grew and what happened eventually to the companies. Human-Computer Interaction
THE INTERACTION 3 OVERVIEW n Interaction models help us to understand what is going on in the interaction between user and system. They address the translations between what the user wants and what the system does. n Ergonomics looks at the physical characteristics of the interaction and how these influence its effectiveness. n The dialog between user and system is influenced by the style of the interface. n The interaction takes place within a social and organizational context that affects both user and system. 124 Chapter 3 n The interaction 3.1 INTRODUCTION In the previous two chapters we have looked at the human and the computer respect- ively. However, in the context of this book, we are not concerned with them in isolation. We are interested in how the human user uses the computer as a tool to perform, simplify or support a task. In order to do this the user must communicate his requirements to the computer. There are a number of ways in which the user can communicate with the system. At one extreme is batch input, in which the user provides all the information to the computer at once and leaves the machine to perform the task. This approach does involve an interaction between the user and computer but does not support many tasks well. At the other extreme are highly interactive input devices and paradigms, such as direct manipulation (see Chapter 4) and the applications of virtual reality (Chapter 20). Here the user is constantly providing instruction and receiving feed- back. These are the types of interactive system we are considering. -

In this retrospective, several of Star's designers describe how Star was and is unique, its historical antecedents, how it was designed and developed, how it has evolved since its introduction, and, finally, some lessons learned. Introduction In April of 1981, Xerox introduced the 8010 "Star" Information System. Star's introduction was an important event in the history of personal computing because it changed notions of how interactive systems should be designed. Several of Star's designers, some of whom were responsible for the original design and others of whom designed recent improvements, describe in this article where Star came from, what is distinctive about it, and how the original design has changed. In doing so, we hope to correct some misconceptions about Star that we have seen expressed in the trade press, and to relate some of what we have learned from the experience of designing it.1* In this article, the name "Star" usually refers to both Star and its successor, ViewPoint. -

It is the "Movie Manual" project, a powerful combination of technologies with styles of use modeled on those of a printed book, but with dramatically expanded powers of display and personalization. The Movie Manual is a training and teaching system that uses personal computing and optical videodisc storage to give its user access to text, sound, and images through a touch sensitive television screen. The result is a composite medium which embodies characteristics of traditional media such as books, film, and television, but provides access through a powerful and personalized interface. -
