2016 Annual Report Dear Friends of MCF,

As you look through the pages of Madison Community Foundation’s 2016 Report to the Community, you will find the many ways MCF’s unique value resonates throughout the work we do for our donors, grant recipients, professional advisors and community.

Highlights of 2016 included the development of a new website that improves the fundholder experience and expands resources for the nonprofit community. We completed a nine-month philanthropic market study that provided guidance for our future efforts, and introduced a new tiered fee structure that lowers fees on larger funds. It’s our duty to ensure MCF operates efficiently and effectively to further your giving and support the causes you care about.

Perhaps most importantly, MCF adopted a new Trust agreement that updates the way we operate while maintaining our ability to meet the needs of our community as they evolve over time.

We are honored by the faith our community places in its community foundation. Together with our supporting organizations, our assets increased by more than 30 percent in 2016–welcoming 43 new funds and 18 new Legacy Society members. What's more we awarded 1,730 grants totaling $10,180,904 to strengthen nonprofits in our community and across the globe.

Community foundations bring donors of all capacities together to pool their resources and do magnificent things. They are rooted in the communities they serve and branch out to support our greatest assets and opportunities. Over the next year, we look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of the Trust in its first 75 years, the unique natural and cultural assets that make the Madison area such a wonderful place to live, and the people and values that are the backbone of your community foundation.

Sincerely,

Blaine Renfert Bob Sorge Board of Governors Chair, President, Fundholder, Fundholder, Legacy Society member Legacy Society member

The program accepts students attending Madison high schools who show potential for academic achievement but face significant economic and personal challenges in reaching their full potential. Because of the racial achievement gap, students of color are the primary participants. Each scholar receives an annual scholarship for academic needs, tutoring and mentoring, and college readiness support. Visual impairment is one of the world’s most prevalent health problems. It’s also one of the most treatable. Through her estate plan, Madisonian Jaya Iyer created a field of interest fund to fight the problem in India, her native country and home to the world’s largest population of blind people. In 2016, the endowment fund she created as part of her charitable bequest awarded three grants totaling $100,000 to Combat Blindness Foundation, Aravind Eye Foundation, and VisionSpring, Inc. Funds supported the building of a new eye clinic, surgery and research, free vision screenings, and free and affordable eyewear.

School children receive care on screening day from Aravind Eye Foundation in an Indian village near Madurai. Three nurses checked vision, two ophthalmologists looked for other eye conditions and prescribed glasses, and two opticians helped pick out frames.
