RACING - SUNDAY 21 MAY

GENNAKERS REPORT – (Thanks Duncan – Ed)

As a man who probably should have swung through the trees on vines, I have so enjoyed the hard work needed to my Gennakered RS100. And thanks Vince for being my exercise buddy.

But praise goes to Mike, who achieved a multi-season goal last Sunday and sailed past the fleet's speed boat Baz & Dan in Trade Secret Formula 15. Laura showed the way and was seen exquisitely flat on the wire with the boat healed to windward. Was this competition between foreign forward hands, as Anna watched from the front end of one of the trailer-sailers? Or was it just that Mike had been out morning after morning this season training them both?

Either way, secret agent Mr Mike Bond (why so much secrecy in F15's?) took the day and became the division's Club Champion 2017.

On Sunday, the light sou'-easter made the work against the tide back up the straights of molasses tricky. The normal advantage of hugging the south bank has vanished since cyclone Debbie and there was ground to be gained on the northern shore, which held a back-eddy of outgoing tide.

Well done everybody, including our other cyclone Debbie who whipped up wonderful food for the day and clocked us all home while her Tony manned the rescue boat.

Thanks and Cheers, Duncan

PS , feel free to edit out my atrocious non-humour. 2

TRAILERABLES REPORT (From me – Ed)

With Bill H the certain Championship Winner, Sunday’s race became a bit of a novelty event. Julie and I got to the start-line, in Bella – only to find that Spiders Shades and Bad Blood were being sailed single-handed! Julie didn’t take up my suggestion that she swim to shore, so I could join them. By the time I recovered from the boom whacking my head (atleast I think it was the boom), the start gun had fired, and the Spiders were already way ahead. Somehow, Andrew managed to his single- handed……..but it didn’t stop Ian M from taking line honours, and pipping him by 10 seconds. Not to be outdone by Andrew, Ian Bowles dropped his , and scaled his unassisted, and did something or other. Bella and Ex had some fierce tacking duels (actually, we were both fiercely trying to be polite, and let the other get around the top mark undisturbed ☺), but Ex finally prevailed to take 3rd place. Graham on his Waller, and Ian Bowles on his Careel stole the show, with their colour co-ordinated boats and kites ☺ Sorry, didn’t get a pic of Shades’ (pics by Julie).

Cat Chat (thanks Dave – Ed)

Just a quickie this week due to my absence again. Looks like it was a long slow day from the elapsed times and the wind records. At least the tide was good for a change. No incidents reported to me so none to report. Thanks to Tony for doing duty and congratulations to Phil for the championship win. Also same to the other fleet winners.

Some sad news from Geoff Benson (Forwarded on by Commodore Phill, and published here with Geoff’s permission)------Original message ------To: Phill Robbins

Hi Phill, it seems like forever since I've been sailing, but life can turn on a dime. My wife Bin and I have had a couple of distractions which have kept me from preferred preference of regular sailing.

Firstly the rains came and our property suffered a number of large land slips and erosion issues. This has taken 6 weeks to stabilise and delayed our planned trip to Cap York. While this was a costly and a significant inconvenience it was also a god send.

With no warning, on Saturday evening Bin suffered a subarachnoid hemarage to the right side of her head. This a very condition where there is an internal bleed to the head. She was transferred from Tweed to Gold Coast hospital and had successful emergency surgery on Sunday. We expect her to remain in Critical Care for 2 weeks and hope to have her home in 3. The medical staff are positive about the outcome and expect she will be able to make a full recovery. This will involve a number of neurological operations over the next 3 to 6 months or so. We are very lucky to still have her with us.

So I will not be able to join you for any of the remaining races this season, even though sailing would be my preference.

Pls let the club members know I have not deserted them and tell the Secret Cat Society to be afraid come next season.

Kind regards: Geoff

Hurry Back, Geoff – the river is dull without you!! -Ed

SUN 28th May (11.30 START!!) Gala Season Finale ☺ There will be two teams races next Sunday so come along as it is sure to be fun. Teams Challenge RULES:

1. There will be 2 team races 2. First race will have special rules as follows: • All attending boats will be divided into two equal teams at briefing. • The aim will to get you selected (slowest) boat(s) home first; that team wins. Placings of all other boats in your team does not matter. This leaves them free to shadow or slow the oppositions selected boat in all legal means available. • All boats will start together for a short one lap race. • The selected boats are called prize boats and they will carry the team colours or flag. • The prize boat is allowed to luff up opposition boats; no other boats can employ this tactic. • If any boat other than a prize boat breaks any rule of sailing they have to make a 720 degree turn as penalty. • Opposition boats must keep at least one (of their own boat) length away from the opponents prize boat at all time. • All rules of sailing apply, except for the changes above. 3. The team with the best personal handicap times for their prize boat(s) wins. PRIZES AWARDED FOR WHOLE TEAM 4. The second race will be run on ordinary personal handicap race rules for all boats. The team with best average of all their positions wins. 5. Briefing will be at 11.30 and first race starts at 12.30pm

CORSAIR COVER – Volunteer Repair Needed Cyclone Debbie damaged the Club jib cover. It’s a fairly simple repair. The stitching attaching the zip, to the cover, un-did. Cover, and zip, are undamaged – they just need to be sewn back together. If anyone has the equipment, and time, to do this, that would be great ☺. Please ring Mark on 0421932945

IDLE GOSSIP..(please send any gossip to [email protected] – Ed)

* I’ve heard, on the grapevine, that a well-known sailer is seriously considering a move to a Cat next season………………

*With the departure of Mono champion Graham Hams and Impulse sailer Cameron Delaney (both to the Gennaker Division), and with Millsy taking up a serious interest in rowing!, the Mono Championship Cup could be there for the taking next season. Perhaps this new addition to the club Mono fleet might just steal the Cup! Q. Will it foil??

From: "Allyson Ekin" Hi there,

I'm wondering if there's a possibility I might be able to get on board a boat as a crew for one of the upcoming races later this month or next? I have had some twilight and Sunday racing experience, on a north shore 32, a couta boat and a trailer sailer. If I could put my name down for any races after Easter, that would be great. I look forward to hearing back.

Kind regards, Allyson
