Last year was a time for connecting, gaining trust and friendships. Let's celebrate the connections we have made and the influence we have gained. It is was also an important milestone in our history because 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act. As we close this year with reflections on family, friends, spirit, contributions, and achievements, let's rest, enjoy and gather strength for the work ahead. Reach out to your peers, ask how you can support each other professionally and personally. CAAN members have fun, but we are also exceptionally serious and ready to activate change. This is our year, "our moment." Our first effort of 2019, during , will be sharing our history of migration and the impact it has on the community. Portland is growing, let's connect, grow and prosper with it. Happy !

“A movement is not a flash of light — it is a flame, a torch passed from one generation to the next and every so often we are blessed with moments where the smolder transforms to blaze again and we’re forced to race down the path of progress.” It was with these inspiring words by poet Mayda del Valle

Julian Massenburg is a Management Analyst in the Communications Department at the Office Management and Finance (OMF).

Tell us something interesting about yourself? I am a native Portlander. In fact, I grew up in Northeast Portland off of Northeast 13th Avenue and Northeast Roselawn Street. Fun fact: if you go to Roselawn City Park, there’s a mural on the park’s garage wall. On the bottom right section of the mural, there is a photo that my father and I painted when I was six years old; my name is on it. I attended King Elementary School, Beaumont Middle School, and Grant High School --"Go Generals!" Then, I went on to attend the University of Oregon, where I studied Journalism and Business Administration. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends & family, going to sporting events, and barbeques – I am a decent cook! I am also a self-proclaimed master at playing dominoes.

What is your personal motto/mantra? "Be the best version of yourself." https://us17.campaign-archive.com/?u=e9e180d241f9dc61e812d96ad&id=45f8dfa5e9[1/17/2020 10:20:39 AM] Happy Holidays from CAAN

What do you do at the City? What are your duties and responsibilities? I’m a Management Analyst at the Office of Management and Finance. Some of my duties include coordinating communication components of the OMF budget development and monitoring, and staffing committees, including the OMF Advisory Committee and OMF Labor Management Committee. Also, I work closely with the Portland Building Reconstruction project team on Change Management Initiatives for the new Portland Building. My portfolio has a good amount of variety, which keeps me engaged.

What type of education and training would you recommend for someone just starting out in the public sector? Something that involves people/and or the community – either directly or indirectly. As a public servant, it’s important to be empathetic and relatable when it comes to community issues.

What is the most important skill you have developed in your career? I would say that my confidence has grown significantly. I was twenty-one years old when I first started working at the City. At that time, coming into a corporate environment was kind of intimidating. As time progressed, I began to learn how the City and my division worked and found a way to make myself a valuable asset. I always approach my mind with this quote in mind: “make yourself an asset in whatever you’re involved with.”

What motivates you? I am motivated by my friends and family. I have a very close-knit group of friends who I have grown up with and continue to grow through life with. I don’t have kids of my own – but I do have two young nieces who mean the world to me. They’re seven and four years of age. My main goal is to be someone who they can always look up to and count on. Whenever I feel as if I’m going to come up short, I’ll think of my loved ones to give me that extra spurt of motivation!

When you are not working, where do you like to spend your time? Most days, I can be found at 24-Hour Fitness. Exercise keeps my immune system running smoothly and functions as a dependable stress reliever.
