Annual dues are due in January. If you’ve not already paid your dues, please pay them as soon as possible.

From your editor: The driving season is around the corner, however, there are a few other things that have been on my mind. Motorcar Garage is closing its doors (see note in this issue). I wish Pete all the luck in the world, your services has been a huge asset to British car owners, you will surely be missed. Another thing, please renew your membership now if you haven’t already done so. On a lighter note I just realized my “B” is 50 this year, any thoughts on how to celebrate? OF

2 President’s Message

Ramblings from your President Hi All, Well it’s been another month, another month closer to Britfest, another month closer to the start of our driving season! The last meeting before we start concentrating on packing Britfest packets, is this coming meeting in March. We celebrate the coming of the formal start of the Britfest season by having our annual Pot Luck Dinner as our March club meeting! We are hoping that this will draw many members, as well as their spouses and children. This in effect is a social event. Each family is asked to bring a dish, either an entre, salad, desert or nibble. This is an annual event that I always enjoy (and this year I’m hoping my wife will come!) I hope you all are busy polishing up your LBC and getting it ready to show at Britfest. Remember, anyone volunteering to help out at the show is entitled to enter their car in the show without paying an entry fee! Right now it’s looking like my ride will be the same Ford van I’ve been bringing for the past 3? years. I’m hoping next year will enable me to bring one of my cars! Right now I’m hoping to spend the nice days for the next two weeks getting ready to having our roof stripped, and replaced. BUT I plan on spending the next forever on crummy days working on getting my garage in to shape. So I can then work on getting my cars into shape! Moving along to things that may be able to help you clean up your garage or cellar, while helping out those who may need those items for their project. Should be able to send them into the newsletter editors to add to a marketplace section to let us all know what you have for sale. This should be a section where all items listed and not sold should have to be resubmitted each month so that items not sold do not show up monthly and clutter up the section. What are your thoughts? Let me know. Lets make this newsletter work for all of our members. Even those that are unable to make the monthly meetings! Your Prez Steve 3 February Minutes by Rudy Bescherer Steve not feeling well was not present as was Gillian (our VP) .After some talk Butch stepped up as our President of For The Day. Had 18 Members in attendance. Britfest - Charlie showed us the new top awards. They are Plates with the Category engraved. They 're a cost savings and all agreed that they are a step up from previous style awards. We need sponsors for all the classes, again they 're $100.00 per class. Help is also needed with the days activities, sign up to volunteer some time on the day The committee will meet again next week at Karl's. Membership - We have 104 members, but only 55 are paid up. if your are one of 49 please pay your dues. On request from Butch 2 members stepped up to tell us the why they own MG’s. Working on repairing his F150, Gary decided to restore a car.. What would it be? A convertible, parts are available and restore-able. Found a B with it leaf spring through the floor, but the price wasn't right. As time progressed the price was reduced to a agreeable price. Now it needed a new floor pan, so Gary took a welding class. John has been a car guy since he was 10 or 11 years old. his boss had a 77 B and wanted $3000.00 for it. The next year it was $2000.00, then his boss getting divorced the price was right now. Seeing the car under a very tall pine tree he now accepted the fact that needing just a clutch might not make it. More to come on both at time progresses Charlie informed us that Steve has planned our Pot Luck Diner at the March Meeting. Bring a covered dish next month.

Member: Ole Flandrup Car: 1971 MGB How I got my “B”

Growing up in Denmark after The 2nd World War was a little different than growing up here. Car ownership was a luxury and very rare, however, my parents did have a car when I was born, a 1930ish DKW Cabrio. What a machine, it was a 2 and it had suicide doors. I remember the doors because the passenger door once opened when my dad and I were driving, I was in the front seat (no seatbelt) and had to cling on to the door strap when we turned. Another time my dad came home and told us he was passed by a wheel that looked like his while he was driving! It was his. After that he bought a bicycle. Our first new car was a black 1954 Ford Anglia 100E which cost a little over $2,000. It was considered a midsize car, there were a few other offerings in that class , , SAAB 93,

Simca 1000, Renault Dauphine and the hated VW Beetle (by anyone that didn’t drive one). We even had a 1956 100E. So early on we

were a British Ford family. However my dad switched to the enemy in 1959 and bought an Opel Rekord (big block, 1680cc) with a color changing band speedometer. In 1962 I was working as an apprentice and word was going around that the boss had gotten a new car and it was parked in the street. I went up and was blown away, it was a baby blue MGB with roll-up windows, I still remember that first impression to this day. However, my first car was a Volvo 544, since sports cars were basically too rare and expensive back then. When I got a chance to come over here in 1971, I knew I was going to go American and read up on American cars in the European Motor Press and remember everybody writing “don’t buy American front wheel drive, over 300hp on the front wheels can’t be done “, so I saw an 1966 Olds Toronado and bought it. Life went on and it wasn’t until 2003 I got this brilliant idea that I needed an MGB and casually mentioned it to Alice. She agreed, a week after I had a 1970 red split- bumper MGB with roll-up windows. I have always worked on cars and have a pretty good selection of tools. My definition of tools has always been tools you buy at Harbor Freight, Sears etc. However I didn’t know I had one of the other kind -an AAA membership! The other thing I was missing was a cell phone. I drove my newly acquired B to work for the first time (less than 10 miles) and it only took 5 hours to get home after negotiating with AAA on a pay phone if I was in Edison or Clark. Since then there have been many minor repairs and improvements, engine replacement,

7 Member’s Car Cont’d upgrade to an , new fuel tank, new distributer (from Rob Medynsky, what a difference). I also changed from wire to Ro-style wheels. Within the last few years I have gone through a couple of Miatas and a Lotus Europa, but the MG is still in the garage. Ole PS: I bought a redline tire kit to be installed so The MG Experience should be even better!

I am the chairman of the MG Car Club Central Jersey Centre Britfestsm 2020 planning committee. The show is for British saloons and sports cars, motorcycles and other vehicles and will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Horseshoe Lake Park, Succasunna, N.J. Britfestsm is one of the first British car and motorcycle shows of the season in the Northeast and has been held annually since 1992. This year’s Featured Class will be the Triumph TR6. The show, which is very popular with British car and motorcycle enthusiasts, attracts up to 250 vehicles and 800 spectators annually. The show is a popular vote event, with trophies awarded in approximately 20 classes, together with additional trophies for the People’s Choice Award, President’s Award, Best of Featured Class and Best in Show. Dash plaques are given to the first 100 entries. There will also be automobilia and parts vendors and door prizes. You can pre-register for this year’s show using the attached registration form. 19 British Vacuum Unit special

Rob Medynski of British Vacuum Unit manufactures original no longer supplied Lucas distributor vacuum units, other ignition parts and is also a re builder of Lucas . One of his latest projects has been to develop a distributor to give efficient ignition timing on British cars using the supercharger. In the past supercharged cars such as the MGB required limited total timing usually no more than 28 degrees under full boost load to prevent pre-ignition. Setting a distributor up this way you lost efficiency the other 99% of the driving time when you're not under boost load. This has been a age old problem when installing a supercharger on our classic British cars. I've also discovered this has been a unsolvable problem with most all make and model cars. Timing has always been a problem because of the wide range of engine performance conditions. First and most important is maximum timing under full boost. As boost pressure increases so does flame speed. The amount of timing needed for the most efficient performance under any and all conditions is calculated by the fuel mixture flame speed. For maximum power and performance the fuel mixture needs to start to expand and build pressure when the is at its most power potential of 20 degrees ATDC. The fuel mixture has a delay from spark to expansion. The 14 to 1 air fuel mixture usually takes around 14.5 MS from spark to full pressure with a normally aspirated engine. This is why spark is BTDC so the air/fuel expansion starts at the 20 degrees piston power potential, not before or after. This is the tricky part. A normally aspirated engine relies on load and RPMs to control timing. With a supercharger we now have enhanced load conditions. With a naturally aspirated engine “use of a ”, the air intake is limited by atmospheric pressure. It can only draw a limited volume of air/fuel mixture. The air /fuel mixture has a flame speed from when spark occurs to when the mixture starts to expand and apply pressure on the piston. Most supercharged engines are low compression. Not under boost can tolerate up to 36 degrees total timing. The supercharger under boost now supply's air/fuel by lbs of pressure psi greatly increasing the flame speed requiring a reduction in timing. Carburated or naturally inspired engines relied on two conditions. Mechanical advance that controls timing by RPMS. Vacuum advance that controlled timing by load and RPMs. Now with a supercharger we need a third condition, boost retard to handle and reduce the over all timing when boost pressure and faster flame speed is present. Ideally when there is no boost we can run with 36 degrees mechanical advance with another 12 to 14 degrees vacuum advance under light load “cruising speeds” for a total of 48 to 50 degrees. With slight load the timing falls back to the mechanical advance 36 degrees. Once the supercharger starts to build pressure the timing needs to retard with the increase in flame speed regulated by boost pressure from the 36 degrees to around 28 degrees. Our simple solution was to design a distributor curve and vacuum unit to give the desired timing under all conditions. 1- We set our distributor for a low compression 36 degrees total at 4000 rpms. 2- Vacuum advance is regulated by load and RPMs mainly at cruising speeds when the fuel mixture becomes leaner and slower to burn to maintain pressure at the maximum piston power potential. A slower flame speed requires a increase in timing, usually 48 to 50 degrees. 3- Boost retard regulated by lbs of boost pressure with a retard range of 1 to 5 lbs boost for 1 to 8 degrees retard. I also designed the vacuum advance/boost unit to handle the extreme vacuum and boost pressures and incorporated a adjustable advance limiter. Our duel unit design parks the point plate at the same location when there is no vacuum or boost. It is not a floating unit. We usually supply our distributors with points and condenser. Electronic ignition can easily be installed. With the British vacuum Unit complete supercharger distributor, special advance, boost retard unit along with our unique distributor advance curve, allows full efficient ignition timing when not under load, vacuum advance when under light load and boost retard by lbs of boost pressure. This allows over all efficiency, the best of all worlds” throughout all rpms, loads and driving conditions and greatly enhances the performance and life of the engine. We also designed our distributor to be a drop in, connect one vacuum line, set 10 degrees static BTDC and your done. Some of the disadvantages with other supercharger systems are low compression engines can safely run 36 degrees total mechanical advance when not under load. Most other systems have limited total timing. Most others do not have the proper vacuum advance rate and do not have a retarded timing option under boost. Some come close but often at a very very high cost, need a separate boost retard and you often need to know how to program the package. If you need any additional information contact British Vacuum Unit at 603-731-1788 or email us at [email protected]

22 British Car Events-Liege-Brescia-Liege-UK

Dear MG Friends Forgive me for emailing you all together, but I need your help, please, to make everyone in MG Car Club Central Jersey Centre aware of a very special MG-only event that will be happening in July this year only - the first ever competitive rally run exclusively for MG cars. In 2008, with the blessing of the Royal Motor Union of Liège, I revived the Liège-Brescia-Liège rally. This one-off event in 1958 was highly significant. It was the only rally of that era that was run specifically for one group of cars - in that original event, it was cars under 500cc. And it was a very serious rally: non-stop from Thursday evening to Saturday morning, then again from Saturday evening to Sunday evening, covering 3300km including many of the finest passes from Liège-Rome-Liège - Gavia and Stelvio twice (once southbound, once northbound), Vrsic in Slovenia, Passo di Pordoi and many more. And unlike their longer rallies, it is possible to divide the route into manageable sections of 300-350km per day, with nice hotels and interesting visits along the way, plus a day off in beautiful Ljubljana, and complete the round trip from Liège to Liège in 10 days. Keeping the tradition of the original Liège-Brescia-Liège, we run the event for a different specific group of cars each year. Last year it was Triumph TRs - we had 26 TRs from UK, USA, Belgium, France and Spain, and they had a wonderful time - you can read their report at http://www.classicrallypress.co.uk/mediapool/77/772273/data/TR_Action_-_Liege_Brescia_Liege.pdf Now, this year only, Liège-Brescia-Liège is for MGs. We have interest from MGs from supercharged K Magnette to X-Power SV, and confirmed entries from 1948 TC to 1978 MGB. But we only have one North American entry so far. To encourage entries, I am prepared to waive the late payment supplement for any entries from your Club members (we can advise on shipping too). I am attaching the brochure for the rally, and I urge you please to contact me to discuss how we can work together to ensure that your members learn about the event and have the opportunity to join us.
