3 2010 Outlook High expectations for CSI Softball; 2010 squad has speed, power and pitching

Playing for the Region 18 Championship is not a lofty goal for the College of Southern Idaho softball team, it’s an expectation. Since the Golden Eagles first stepped on the field in 2007 as a brand new program, they have been a force, playing for the Region 18 Championship every year. This year, CSI head coach Nick Baumert expects no less. “We have a good mix of returners and newcomers,” Baumert said. “We have speed, power and athleticism. And most importantly, we have a group of players that hate to lose.” To win on the softball field, pitching is crucial. The Golden Eagles will rely on all-region selection and sopho- more Generra Nielson for a bulk of the innings. Joining her in the circle will be sophomore Brie Dimond and freshman Kelsey Bryant. “With just three pitchers, we will expect a lot from them,” Baumert said. “They all have such different pitching styles it should be a benefit as we put together a rotation that utilizes each of their strengths.” When Bryant isn’t pitching, the 6-footer will be playing shortstop for the Golden Eagles. She will be joined on the infield by returners Brittany Gonzales (first base), Kayla Powell (third base and SS) and MichonVanderpoel (third base). Newcomers include Mikkel Griffin (second base), Marina Groenewegen (third base) and Chelsea Buttars (third base).

4 2010 Outlook

“Brittany is one lone returning starter but both Kayla and Michon gained valuable experience last season,” Baumert said. “Kelsey, Marina and Chelsea give us size and power at the plate and Mikkel is athletic and quick. She is one of the best hitters I’ve coached.” Powell also gives CSI options. She will be able to catch when needed and play shortstop when Bryant pitches. In addition to Powell at the catcher position, sophomore Chelsea Nix returns after starting the last half of the season as a freshman. First-team all state Utah catcher Lyndi Miller will be able to swing for the Golden Eagles in the designated player position or catch. “We are lucky to have the depth that we have at catcher. Chelsea and Kayla have worked hard to improve of- fensively and defensively. I’m excited to see what Lyndi can do. She can really swing it,” Baumert said. As much power as the Golden Eagles have in the infield, they counter that with speed in the outfield. Freshmen Jessica Albertson, Marie Williams and MeChel Hunt will see the most time in the outfield for CSI. All three hit from the left side with Hunt also swinging for power. “This is the most athletic outfield I’ve had since I’ve coached at CSI,” Baumert said. “Once they adjust to the college game, they could really make an impact.” The key to the Golden Eagles success will be to stay healthy. With just 14 players on the roster, CSI will rely heavily on each player to be consistent and ready to play every game. Play in the Scenic West Athletic Conference will be a battle as usual. Salt Lake CC returns seven key players and added some talented transfers and freshmen. “Salt Lake will have the edge on us early in the year with the experience they return,” Baumert said. “But I wouldn’t trade any of our kids. They have worked incredibly hard all fall and as the freshmen gain valuable playing experience, I expect us to be right there with them in the end.” North Idaho and College of Southern Nevada will be tough again. And Colorado Northwestern and Western Nevada should both be much improved. Snow is a bit of an unknown with a new coach in the mix. Although the Badgers should have an easy transition with assistant coach Andrea Wilson continuing on with the team. “We play in a league that prepares you to be competitive nationally,” Baumert said. “This year should be no different. I think the top half of our conference can play with anyone in the country.” 5 Head Coach Nick Baumert 4th Season

Nick Baumert joined the Golden Eagles as the head softball coach in 2006. In the program’s first season, he earned 2007 Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2008, Baumert led CSI to a Region 18 Championship and brought home a 7th-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. In 2009, the Golden Eagles placed second in the SWAC as well as the Region 18 Tournament, ending the season ranked 10th in the nation. During the first three seasons, the Golden Eagles have had threeAll- Americans, six NFCA All-West selections, two NFCA All-Americans and six NJCAA Academic All-Americans. The team has posted a high enough grade point average every year to reach Academic All-American team status. Prior to being hired to start a brand new program at CSI, Baumert coached high school softball. As the Twin Falls High School varsity coach for seven seasons, Baumert led the Bruins to a 159-46 record. He won the Region III title five times and placed fifth three times at the state tournament. Throughout his high school coaching career, he coached one high school All-American, six Region III Players of the Year and 29 Region III first team selections. He also helped 12 players continue their softball career at the college level. Baumert received coach of the year accolades five times for Region III, twice for the Times-News and seven times from the District IV coaches. Most recently, Baumert was named Distinguished Softball Coach of the Year for Idaho in 2006. Baumert is married to Karen. They have two daughters, Katelynn and Kylie.

2007 Region 18 Coach of the Year

7 Debbie Dodds AssistantCoach 2nd Season

Former Twin Falls High School standout Debbie Dodds joined the Golden Eagle softball team in the fall of 2008. Dodds, who played softball and graduated from BYU, was the only high school All-American softball player at Twin Falls High School. She started for the Bruins all four years. “Debbie is one of the hardest workers I have ever been around,” CSI head coach Nick Baumert said. “She has a great softball background and comes from an amazing family. We are excited to have her and feel very lucky to have her return to Twin Falls. I think she might just be my best recruit yet.” Dodds helped lead BYU to the NCAA tournament as a senior. She earned first team Mountain West Conference honors in 2004 and 2005 at BYU. She also was named to the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association west region team in 2004. As a senior, Dodds was named the team’s most inspirational player. She also excelled in the classroom earning scholar athlete honors. After graduating from BYU with a degree in physical education, Dodds be- came the head coach at Timpview High School in Orem, Utah. She led the team to its first ever state softball appearance. This isn’t the first time Dodds and Baumert have worked together on the softball diamond. Dodds played for Baumert her last three years of high school and has worked several CSI softball camps. In 2001, Dodds was the Region III Player of the Year at TFHS. “She is a perfect fit for our program,” Baumert said. “She has a great understanding of the game and what it takes to be successful. Debbie is the type of coach that can take us to an even higher level. She knows what it takes to succeed and will place high expectations on our players.”
