Lorques, France 3 5 returners and 9 newcomers focus on bringing home CSI’s 10th national championship When the College of Southern Idaho women’s basketball team takes the court for the 2010-2011 season, it won’t look much like any team Golden Eagle head coach Randy Rogers has recruited in his eight years at CSI. In fact, if you lined up all 13 girls from shortest to tallest, figuring out what positions the players play might be difficult. The shortest Golden Eagle is 5-6. The tallest - 6 foot. So don’t expect this year’s team to play a half-court game. Fans will be treated to fast-paced, aggressive, intense 40 minutes each contest. “I know we will be undersized,” Rogers said. “But I really love working with this group of kids and one thing I know for sure is that they will play hard.” While the Golden Eagles return All-American Laurel Kearsley (6- 0 post from Victor), this won’t be a team of individuals or standout players. It will be a team of parts that are interchangeable. Most every player on the team will see time at a guard position ex- cept maybe Kearsley and freshman Fanny Cavallo (6-0 Center) from France. Those two six-footers will anchor the Golden Eagles inside. Joining them at times down low will be returning player Tina Fakahafua (5-10 guard/ forward from Salt Lake City), sophomore transfer Taylor Altenburg (6-0 guard/forward from Elko, Nev.), freshmen Kylee Schierman (5-10 guard/forward from Portland, Ore.) and Chakala Carthen (5-8 guard Sparks, Nev.). “All six of those players are agressive and relentless on the boards,” Rogers said. “They will surprise some teams with their quick- ness and activity around the basket.” Defining who the starting point guard will be is even more difficult than determing what position all the CSI players will play. Returning starter Felicity Jones (5-7 guard from Utah) could see some time at the point guard position but will likely be expected to play in the 2-spot. She will be CSI’s defen- sive stopper and will likely battle for top rebounding honors each game. 4 2010 Outlook Rogers also can look to newcomers Guilher- mina El-Mir (5-8 guard from Australia), Kyler Parai (5-7 guard from New Zealand), Mechela Barnes (5-6 guard from Tacoma) or Tayllor Gipson (5-7 guard from California) to bring the ball down for the Golden Eagles. “We have a lot of options,” Rogers said. “All five of those players can really shoot the ball and will be the starting point on our full-court pressure.” In the 2- or 3-guard position, returning Holly Checketts (5-9 from Preston) and Kylie Hardi- son (5-9 from Pocatello) will give the Golden Eagles experience and depth. “The strength of this team will be our ability to run players in and out of the game and not lose our defensive intensity,” Rogers said. “We need to be deep to be able to be successful at the type of game we
