He appeared at Cologne in 1581, where he apparently studied the writings of Aristotle. At some point prior to obtain- ing his doctorate, Althusius also studied law at Geneva with Denis Godefroy (1549–1622), the renowned legal scholar who published the first complete edi- tion of Roman Civil Law in 1583.2 He received his doctorate in both civil and canon law at Basel in 1586. Astonishingly, he published his first book Jurisprudentiae Romanae, which was a systematic treatise on Roman law based on the Godefroy edition, during the same year. While at Basel, he lived for a time in the home of Johannes Grynaeus (1540–1617), with whom he studied Reformed theology and thereafter maintained a lifelong correspon- dence. In 1586, he accepted a call to teach in the newly founded law faculty in the Reformed Academy at Herborn.

    1 The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research Report to be discussed at the 28th Congress of Nordic Historians, Joensuu 14-17 August 2014 2 Preface This report is written by members of a working group called Nordic Reformation History Working Group, that was established as a result of a round table session on the reformation at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Tromsø in Norway in August 2011. The purpose of the report is to form the basis of discussions at a session on “The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research” at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Joensuu in Finland in August 2014. Because of its preliminary character the report must not be circulated or cited. After the congress in Joensuu the authors intend to rework and expand the report into an anthology, so that it can be published by an international press as a contribution from the Nordic Reformation History Working Group to the preparations for the celebration in 2017 of the 500 years jubilee of the beginning of the reformation. Agustin, a Spanish cleric and jurist, was Archbishop of Tarragona. He was a leading member of the group of antiquarians in mid-sixteenth century Rome who were involved in the study of ancient Roman institutions. First published in 1583, De Legibus is a dictionary of Roman law with an emphasis on legislation. The final section, a set of plates preceded by a half-title reading Leges et Senatusconsulta Quae in Veteribus cum ex Lapide tum ex Aere Monumentis Reperiuntur, is a collection of transcribed documents.

    DE L’HISTOIRE DU DROIT FRANÇAIS: JACQUES GODEFROY Elena DAMIAN Abstract An important representative of the Godefroy family, a true dynasty of legal advisers and historians, Jacques Godefroy (Geneva, 1587-1652) spent almost his entire life in Geneva. In 1619 he was named professor of law at the University of Geneva, but he was better known and more appreciated for his numerous works than for his teaching activity. Among his works, the most famous and mostly used by jurists is the remarkable commentary on the Theodosian Code, Codex Theodosianus that appeared in Lyon, in 1665, in 3 volumes in-folio and was reedited in Leipzig in 1736-1745. A few copies of the valuable works of the French scholar can be found in Transylvania as well, and they are still kept even today in some prestigious libraries in Cluj-Napoca or Târgu-Mureş. Among the owners of these books there also were the well-known scholars Timotei Cipariu and Sámuel Teleki. Jacques Godefroy, le fils de Denis Ier Godefroy1, a passé presque toute sa vie à Genève et il a gardé la religion de son célèbre père, étant un réformé convaincu. Il a commencé ses études avec son père, puis il a étudié le droit et l’histoire à Bourges et à Paris. Pour avoir obtenu de très bons résultats aux examens et pour avoir déjà publié quelques livres remarquables, Jacques Godefroy a obtenu une chaire de droit à l’Université de Genève, en 1619.

    4 Changes in the Poetics of Song during the Finnish Reformation Kati Kallio In sixteenth-century Finland, the Reformation marked not only the begin- ning of the Finnish written language, but also a slow, fundamental, and Amsterdamlong-lasting change in poetics and music. Stanzaic and rhymed poetics fijirst appeared in new Lutheran hymns and went on to take over the whole sphere of folk singing in Western Finland over a couple of centuries. The poetic features of vernacular Lutheran hymns varied by time, poet, and genre of singing, and these changes may be connected with the changes in historical and ideological contexts. The focus of this chapter is on the fijirst three important translators and creators of Finnish liturgical songs, Michael Agricola (c. 1510-1554), Jacobus Finno (c. 1540-1588), and Hemmingius of Masku (c. 1550-1619). They were all clergymen in the diocese of Turku (Swe. Åbo), consisting of the westernUniversity and southern parts of modern Finland. At the time, the area was the most eastern diocese of the Kingdom of Sweden. The language of Church was Latin, while the languages of trade and secular administration were mostly German and Swedish. From the period prior to the Reformation there are no sources of literate Finnish language or rhymed poetics. The old oral idiom, the Kalevala metre, was built on alliterative trochaic verses with no rhymes or stanzas, and sung with narrow melodies of one or two lines. The sources and contents of the early Finnish hymn melodiesPress and texts, the role of the translators, and the relationships of the fijirst hymnals to ec- clesiastical history have been analysed, but the poetics have not been given much attention.
