It develops a novel framework that calls both primordialist and modernist approaches to nationalism and national identity into question before applying that framework to Croatia. In doing so it not only provides a new way of thinking about how national identity is formed and why it is so important but also closely examines 1990s Croatia in a unique way. An explanation of how Croatian national identity was formed in an abstract way by a historical narrative that traces centuries of yearning for a national state is given. The book goes on to show how the government, opposition parties, dissident intellectuals and diaspora change change groups offered alternative accounts of this narrative in order to The formation legitimise contemporary political programmes based on different visions of national identity. UNIVERSE AND INNER SELF IN EARLY INDIAN INDIAN AND INNER SELF IN EARLY UNIVERSE ‘The philosophical traditions of Greece and India are divergent but also GREEK THOUGHT AND EARLY show striking convergences. This book is an important and valuable contribution to the comparative study of the two ancient cultures. The various chapters are learned and sophisticated and considerably enrich our understanding of Greek and Indian philosophy.’ Phiroze Vasunia, University College London How can we explain the remarkable similarities between early Indian and early Greek philosophy? UNIVERSE AND Around the middle of the first millennium BCE there occurred a revolution in thought, with novel ideas such as that understanding the inner self is both vital for human well-being and central to understanding INNER SELF the universe. This intellectual transformation is sometimes called the beginning of philosophy. The revolution occurred in both India and Greece, but not in the vast Persian Empire that divided them. How was IN EARLY INDIAN this possible? This is a puzzle that has never been solved. This volume brings together Hellenists and Indologists representing AND EARLY GREEK a variety of perspectives on the similarities and differences between the two cultures, and on how to explain them. Dušan T. Batakovič Serbia and Greece in the First World War: An Overview I Serbia and Greece had established a close political cooperation al ready in the second half of the nineteenth century, in order to foster the common struggle against the Ottoman rule in the Balkans. The first al liance treaty, within the context of the broader Balkan alliance, was signed in 1867, followed by the military convention in 1868. Although there was no immediate military outcome of this treaty, due to the assas sination of the Balkan alliance architect, Prince Michael Obrenovič in June 1868, its existence was highlighting the long-term commitment of both Greece and Serbia for the coordinating efforts to fight Ottomans1. It was only in 1912, through second Balkan alliance, that both Serbia and Greece were able to fulfill their political goals by military means. However, the First Balkan War started without a signed political treaty, regulating bilateral obligations between Serbia and Greece. After they gained a common frontier in Macedonia, Serbia and Greece have signed a defensive alliance treaty and a military convention in June 1913, prior to the Second Balkan War12. The Serbian-Greek treaty aimed, in the first place, to maintain the new Balkan settlement by implementing the decisions of the Bucharest Treaty. In case of Bulgarian 1. D. But as the older ones are those which are at present used in daily speech by the vast majority of the inhabitants, we shall not be accused of pedanticism or of political bias if we prefer them to the later versions. We therefore in this book do not speak of Fiume but of Rieka, not of Cattaro but of Kotor, and so forth. In other parts a greater laxity is permissible, since no false impression is conveyed by using the non-Slav version. Thus we have preferred the more habitual Belgrade to the more correct Beograd, and the Italian Scutari to the Albanian Shqodra. The Yugoslavs themselves are too deferential towards the foreign nomenclature of their towns. Thus if one of them is talking to you of Novi Sad he will almost in- variably add, until it grows rather wearisome, the German and the Magyar forms : Neu Satz and Uj Videk. These names and those of persons have been generally spelt in accordance with Croat orthography—that is to say, with the Latin alphabet modified in order to re- produce all the sounds of the Serbo-Croatian language.
