Mukurtu Taxonomies: values preloaded into the Mukurtu pilot platform as at January 2021 Taxonomies are lists of words or phrases that are used consistently (in the same way and spelled the same way) in specified fields. In Mukurtu there are a number of fields that allow the words/phrases to be “preloaded” by the Mukurtu administrator. These fields are: Language _________________________ 2 Subject ___________________________ 7 Format ___________________________ 9 Place ____________________________ 5 Category _________________________ 8 Type ____________________________ 10 Taxonomies help with: • For users: Words/phrases being spelled consistently across the site – this helps with making sure that when someone does a search all the records for a search term are found. • For archivists: Words/phrases in taxonomies become predictive text that can save the typing all of a word/phrase. This means that you can type in a couple of letters, a range of choices will appear allowing you to click on the right choice and have it added automatically to the field. There are other taxonomies in Mukurtu that are generated automatically when Archivists add a value to a field. These taxonomies relate to the fields of: • Creator • Publisher • Contributor • People When you first put in the name of a Creator for example, Mukurtu adds that into a Creator taxonomy. The next time you start adding that person’s name into the Creator field for another record, you will get a predictive text suggestion matching that person’s name. This helps with consistent use of the way that person’s name is spelled and set out. It is important that Archives have a policy on how names are structured and that it is used consistently by all Archive staff doing data entry. First Nations Media Australia.
