Dann ging er zu Bekannten und fragte: ‘Kannste für mich mal ein Kotelett mit braten?’ und da kriegte er da sein Kotelett.’ p.76. Benno Elkus: ‘In general pretty good. Sometimes there were some remarks about the Jews, what normally happened, but I always had my Christian friends, very intimate.’ p.77. It’s a very funny thing because I remember my father being very close to some of the party members.’ Bernard H.: ‘And one night, we were in a restaurant, and there was a group of Nazis sitting there also. (…) and they came after us and when we were outside, they wanted to beat us up. So then we said: ‘let’s go’, we were all from the football team. We beat them.’ p.83. Josef Klüsekamp: ‘Ja, wer sollte das verbieten? Das war zwar nicht gerne gesehen innerhalb der Partei, das war verpönt, aber wir waren ja noch klein.’ En: ‘Die waren zwischendurch noch weg von Ahaus, aber die kamen dann wieder, weil konnten nirgendwo hin. Die konnten sich nicht einfach eine Fahrkarte kaufen am Bahnhof, die mussten Ausweise vorlegen, und da stand als erstes ein großes "J" von Jude drauf. Also konnten die gar nicht weg hier. Und Autos hatte ja keiner, und wenn dann gab's kein Benzin, das wurde ja alles zugeteilt. Damit konnte man auch nicht hinfahren wo man wollte oder eine jüdische Familie irgendwo hin bringen. Die wären ja selbst eingesperrt worden, wären mit ins KZ gekommen. Nach der Kristallnacht habe ich sie noch wohl gesehen, aber kaum noch damit gesprochen.’ p.84. Berta Nünning: ‘Ich wüsste hier keinen, der auf die Juden geschimpft hätte und sie gehasst. An sich waren alle mit den Juden gut befreundet, die Juden haben hier nie gelitten. Aber es sind ja viele weggeschickt worden. (…) Man weiß ja, dass so viele Leute umgekommen sind von den Juden, aber erlebt hat man das selber nicht. In den Großstädten, im Ruhrgebiet, war das anders, da lebte das mehr. Hier ist nicht viel vorgefallen.’ Hermann Lankhorst: ‘Das wurde alles weniger. Die Juden wurden dann wohl ausgegrenzt. So wie durch den Stürmer.’ (…) ‘Den Juden hat in der Zeit niemand was getan. Die durften nicht schwarz schlachten, aber die hat ja auch niemand verraten dann. Und nachher wurden die einfach abgeholt und weg waren sie!’ (…) (‘Ich versuche zu verstehen, wie das war, hier kannten sich doch alle, und dann waren die auf einmal weg?!’) ‘Also die Leute hier haben denen nichts weggenommen. Aber vom Staat aus, wurden die wohl benachteiligt. Zum Beispiel kriegten die ja weniger Lebensmittelmarken. Aber das wussten wir ja alles nicht damals! Die Nachbarn untereinander hat man sich nicht drangsaliert. Also man hat denen nicht ihre Gärten abgenommen oder so. (…) Also Grundakkord vom damaligen Leben war einfach, das hier alle miteinander gelebt haben.’ p.85. Agnes Koertshuis: ‘Da konnte auch keiner was sagen oder machen. Wenn das langsam passiert wäre, dann war Protest gekommen. Aber das war nicht so, die Nazis waren so schlau, die haben das so gemacht.’ Hermann Lankhorst: ‘Dass wir allesamt ja gesagt haben, und das hat man uns auch abgenommen, wir haben davon nichts gewusst. Wir haben davon, ich habe davon gewusst, dass se die Scheibe eingeschlagen haben, dass se denen die Möbel zerstört haben. Ich habe davon gewusst, dass se die zusammengepfercht haben. 204 Ich habe davon gewusst dass sie ihr Silber bei jemand unterbringen wollten. Ich gehör zum Volk, zur Allgemeinheit. Ich habe davon gewusst. (...) Ach, ich bin ganz froh da mal drüber zu sprechen.’ p.87. Bernard Suskind: ‘In 1931, my grandparents (…) celebrated an anniversary and everybody attended, the whole town, a big announcement in the paper and everything and really a big thing for a small town. 1932 (…) he had a heart attack and he died. A big funeral for my grandfather, it got announcements, everything. 1934 my grandmother died, you know we had a big, our own grave, we had a hay wagon we had someone made a coffin for her, but nobody attended. We had to bring her and bury her all by ourselves. In two years how that changed, I just wanted to bring that up.’ Berta Nünning: 'Die katholischen Mädchen haben die jüdischen Mädchen auch wohl mal eingeladen zum Kaffee und so. Als Hitler kam, wurde das schwieriger'. Hermann de Leve junior: ‘Genauso war es auch so, dass in dieser Gaststätte ein Sportfest war vom Turnverein. Helga Zilversmit durfte daran als Jüdin nicht teilnehmen. (…) Mein Vater hat Helga aber einfach mit rein genommen und hat gesagt: ‘Helga, du kommst mit!’ - und das gab einen riesen Aufstand auf der Feier. Da wurden die Juden schon ausgegrenzt.’ p.88. Bernard Suskind: ‘And the day came in 1935, we had the hotel owner notifying my father personally, he says, I don’t want you to come anymore every week, because then I have to tell you that you are not welcome here, and I don’t want to tell you personally, we are good friends, and just stay away because. So he could not go to that party anymore once a week.’ Walter Steinweg: ‘They had a son, and before it became really so bad, when they (…) could not be seen with Jews anymore, they always were with us. We always had coffee… Kaffeeklatsches and were with the family all the time. And when that became bad, they even told their own child not to see us, not to come into our house.’ p.89. Irmgard Ohl: ‘Und auf diesem Weg, wurde ich angepöbelt, angespuckt, üble Worte nachgerufen und so weiter. (...) ich durfte nicht mehr auf der Straße spielen mit anderen Kindern.’ Ludwig Hopp: ‘Zum Beispiel durften Juden dann nicht mehr mit dem städtischen Leichenwagen zum Friedhof gebracht werden.     STUDIA ROSENTHALIANA 45 (2014), 37-55 doi: 10.2143/SR.45.0.3021380 Developing Concepts at Amsterdam’s Jewish Historical Museum HETTY BERG N FEBRUARY 2007, seventy-five years after Amsterdam’s Jewish I Historical Museum first opened to the public in 1932, the museum completed an extensive programme of reconstruction and refurbishing. New public facilities were put in place as well as new temporary exhibi- tion spaces and a children’s museum, while all the permanent displays were completely overhauled. As project leader in charge of this renewal, one aspect that I found particularly intriguing was how the motivation of those involved in the current process compared to the motivation of those involved with the founding of the museum in 1930 and its devel- opment in the intervening years. Our museum is one of Europe’s oldest Jewish museums, having been founded as an institution eighty years ago. It is therefore interesting to compare the development of thinking at the museum: the ideas that motivated its founders; those who strug- gled to re-establish the museum after the war; the staff who expanded the museum in the Weigh House; the team that created the new museum in its new setting in 1987; and those who made the current renewal possible. How have their goals and visions developed? People who make exhibitions and museums make choices, they attribute value and significance and set priorities which they pass on to society through their presentations. Ariese University of Amsterdam Introduction This report was developed within the Horizon2020 project ECHOES: European Colonial Heritage Modalities in Entangled Cities as part of its work package 3 on ‘ City Museums and Multiple Colonial Pasts .’ This work package conduct s in -depth, qualitative, comparative analyses of three city museums, each representing distinct positions within colonial history. The Am sterdam Museum forms one of these three case studies. The aim of this first report on the Amsterdam Museum is to reconstruct the evolution of the museum and illustrate the current state and positionality of the museum. This analysis is placed within the co ntext of the history of the city of Amsterdam and consists of research into the museum’s position, priorities, policies, problems , and opportunities, which are shaped by both external influences ( e.g . relationships to city authorities, national or local po litics, developments within the national museum sector, or the particular features of the city) as well as internal processes and values. Thus, this report provides a preliminary case study of the Amsterdam Museum from a post -colonial perspective in order to understand how the museum is positioned within the colonial past s of Amsterdam and how, in turn, th ese past s are represented in the museum. The Amsterdam Museum provides a case study from a city museum located in Western Europe.

Jewish Folk Literature Abstract Four interrelated qualities distinguish Jewish folk literature: (a) historical depth, (b) continuous interdependence between orality and literacy, (c) national dispersion, and (d) linguistic diversity. In spite of these diverging factors, the folklore of most Jewish communities clearly shares a number of features. The Jews, as a people, maintain a collective memory that extends well into the second millennium BCE. Although literacy undoubtedly figured in the preservation of the Jewish cultural heritage to a great extent, at each period it was complemented by orality. The reciprocal relations between the two thus enlarged the thematic, formal, and social bases of Jewish folklore. Sigmund Freud Berlin's Uncanny Quandary Just how does a city „house“ the memory of a people no longer at „home“ there? How does a city like Berlin invite a people like the Jews back into its official past after having driven them so murderously from it? In fact, such questions may suggest their own, uncanny answers: A „Jewish Museum“ in a nation that not so long ago voided itself of Jews, making them alien strangers in a land they had considered „home,“ will not by definition be heim- lich but must be regarded as unheimlich – or as our translation would have it, uncanny. The dilemma facing the designer of such a museum thus becomes: How then to embody this sense of un- heimlichkeit, or uncanniness, in a medium like architecture, which has its own long tradition of heimlichkeit, or homeliness? In their initial conception of what they then regarded as a Jewish „extension“ to the Berlin Museum, city planners hoped to reco- gnize both the role Jews had once played as co-creators of Ber- lin's history and culture and that the city was fundamentally haun- ted by its Jewish absence.
