Philip Roth, The Plot Against America 1. Inleiding 1. Momentopnamen Gildehaus, Duitsland, 1 april 1933 Er staan SA-mannen voor de slagerij van de Zilversmits. Hermann Zilversmit, een van de zoons die in de zaak werkt, bekijkt ze vanachter de toonbank eens goed: in uniform, met een geweer over de schouder, zien ze er dreigend uit. Vanuit de winkel is het moeilijk te zien hoe de mannen kijken, maar al te vriendelijk zal het niet zijn. Elke keer wanneer een mogelijke klant in de richting van de zaak komt lopen, houden ze een bord omhoog en beginnen ze te schreeuwen: ‘Koop niet bij joden! De joden zijn ons ongeluk!’. Het is een bespottelijke, maar ook wat intimiderende vertoning. Hermann loopt naar voren om te zien wie het zijn; in zijn geboortedorp kent hij bijna iedereen wel van gezicht. Wanneer hij bij de voordeur is, kijkt een van de mannen achterom, en hij herkent hem: Johann Müller,1 een knul die hij al jaren tegenkomt op de voetbalclub waar ze beiden spelen. Geschrokken wil hij zich omdraaien; hij wist niet dat Johann ook tot die club malloten behoort die denken dat ze de hele boel hier kunnen bestieren. Maar Johann glimlacht naar hem, buigt zich naar hem toe en fluistert: ‘Hermann, zie ik je deze week weer op het veld?’ Fürstenau, Duitsland, 10 november 1938 Het is al de hele nacht en ochtend onrustig in de stad. Het schijnt dat verschillende joodse mannen zijn opgepakt, en de vader van Bernard Süskind is het huis uitgegaan om een kijkje te nemen. Bernard staat in zijn kamer voor het raam. Met zijn zeventien jaar kan hij zich al bijna niet meer herinneren hoe het leven was voordat de nazi’s bijna zes jaar geleden aan de macht kwamen. Ja, in 1932 werd zijn grootvader begraven en bijna het hele stadje liep uit om grootvader naar zijn laatste rustplaats te begeleiden. Nog geen twee jaar later was niemand komen opdagen toen zijn grootmoeder werd begraven. Dat was een moment geweest waarop hij zich had gerealiseerd dat het leven langzaam maar zeker veranderd was. Steeds meer plekken werden voor joden verboden verklaard, steeds vaker gebeurde het dat bekenden de weg overstaken wanneer ze hem zagen aankomen. Op een gegeven moment was de eigenaar van het lokale café Bernards vader persoonlijk komen vertellen dat hij niet meer welkom was bij de Stammtisch. De wereld was steeds kleiner geworden, maar Bernard wist al bijna niet meer beter. Maar nu is er iets anders aan de hand, en de hele familie is bang. Hé daar is oom Gerd!2 Bernard kan vanuit het raam net de beste vriend van zijn ouders bij de voordeur zien staan. Opgelucht loopt hij zijn kamer uit om hem te begroeten. Wanneer oom Gerd hem ziet, begroet hij hem met: ‘Hé Bernard, goed je te zien, kom je even met me mee?’. Bernard loopt zonder te kijken zijn moeder voorbij. Op straat zijn opeens twee mannen in SA-uniform opgedoken. Oom Gerd duwt hem in de richting van de mannen en roept: ‘Hé hier, ik heb nog een jood gevonden!’. Enschede, eind 1939 Henk van Gelderen zit aan tafel met zijn ouders en het echtpaar Auerhahn. De jonge student is voor een paar dagen uit Amsterdam naar huis gekomen.

    STUDIA ROSENTHALIANA 45 (2014), 37-55 doi: 10.2143/SR.45.0.3021380 Developing Concepts at Amsterdam’s Jewish Historical Museum HETTY BERG N FEBRUARY 2007, seventy-five years after Amsterdam’s Jewish I Historical Museum first opened to the public in 1932, the museum completed an extensive programme of reconstruction and refurbishing. New public facilities were put in place as well as new temporary exhibi- tion spaces and a children’s museum, while all the permanent displays were completely overhauled. As project leader in charge of this renewal, one aspect that I found particularly intriguing was how the motivation of those involved in the current process compared to the motivation of those involved with the founding of the museum in 1930 and its devel- opment in the intervening years. Our museum is one of Europe’s oldest Jewish museums, having been founded as an institution eighty years ago. It is therefore interesting to compare the development of thinking at the museum: the ideas that motivated its founders; those who strug- gled to re-establish the museum after the war; the staff who expanded the museum in the Weigh House; the team that created the new museum in its new setting in 1987; and those who made the current renewal possible. How have their goals and visions developed? People who make exhibitions and museums make choices, they attribute value and significance and set priorities which they pass on to society through their presentations. Ariese University of Amsterdam Introduction This report was developed within the Horizon2020 project ECHOES: European Colonial Heritage Modalities in Entangled Cities as part of its work package 3 on ‘ City Museums and Multiple Colonial Pasts .’ This work package conduct s in -depth, qualitative, comparative analyses of three city museums, each representing distinct positions within colonial history. The Am sterdam Museum forms one of these three case studies. The aim of this first report on the Amsterdam Museum is to reconstruct the evolution of the museum and illustrate the current state and positionality of the museum. This analysis is placed within the co ntext of the history of the city of Amsterdam and consists of research into the museum’s position, priorities, policies, problems , and opportunities, which are shaped by both external influences ( e.g . relationships to city authorities, national or local po litics, developments within the national museum sector, or the particular features of the city) as well as internal processes and values. Thus, this report provides a preliminary case study of the Amsterdam Museum from a post -colonial perspective in order to understand how the museum is positioned within the colonial past s of Amsterdam and how, in turn, th ese past s are represented in the museum. The Amsterdam Museum provides a case study from a city museum located in Western Europe.

Jewish Folk Literature Abstract Four interrelated qualities distinguish Jewish folk literature: (a) historical depth, (b) continuous interdependence between orality and literacy, (c) national dispersion, and (d) linguistic diversity. In spite of these diverging factors, the folklore of most Jewish communities clearly shares a number of features. The Jews, as a people, maintain a collective memory that extends well into the second millennium BCE. Although literacy undoubtedly figured in the preservation of the Jewish cultural heritage to a great extent, at each period it was complemented by orality. The reciprocal relations between the two thus enlarged the thematic, formal, and social bases of Jewish folklore. How does a city like Berlin invite a people like the Jews back into its official past after having driven them so murderously from it? In fact, such questions may suggest their own, uncanny answers: A „Jewish Museum“ in a nation that not so long ago voided itself of Jews, making them alien strangers in a land they had considered „home,“ will not by definition be heim- lich but must be regarded as unheimlich – or as our translation would have it, uncanny. The dilemma facing the designer of such a museum thus becomes: How then to embody this sense of un- heimlichkeit, or uncanniness, in a medium like architecture, which has its own long tradition of heimlichkeit, or homeliness?
