Unit 5: Crisis and Change Lesson F: The Failure of Democracy and Return of War Student Resource: Timeline for World War II — Japan Timeline for World War II — Japan Pre-1920: • 1853: American Commodore Matthew Perry arrived in Tokyo harbor and forced the Japanese to allow trade with U.S. merchants with threat of military action. • 1858: Western nations forced Japan to sign the Unequal Treaties. These articles established export and import tariffs and the concept of "extraterritoriality" (i.e., Japan held no jurisdiction over foreign criminals in its land. Their trials were to be conducted by foreign judges under their own nation's laws). Japan had no power to change these terms. • 1868: Japan, in an effort to modernize and prevent future Western dominance, ousted the Tokugawa Shogunate and adopted a new Meiji Emperor. The next few decades saw rapid and successful industrialization during the Meiji Restoration. • 1899: With newly gained power from recent industrialization, Japan successfully renegotiated aspects of the Unequal Treaties. • 1899–1901: The Boxer Rebellion led China to a humiliating defeat by the Eight-Nation Alliance of Western powers including the United States and Japan, ceding more territory, and dealing one of the final blows to the struggling Qing Dynasty. • 1904–1905: The Russo-Japanese War began with a surprise attack and ended by an eventual Japanese victory over Imperial Russia. The Japanese took control of Korea. • 1914: During World War I, Japan and other Allies seized German colonial possessions. • 1919: Japan, as a member of the victorious Allies during World War I, gained a mandate over various Pacific islands previously part of the German colonial empire. -

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term. -

Children of the Light: The Rise and Fall of New Bedford Whaling and the Death of the Arctic Fleet. Boston: Little, Brown, 1973. A somewhat elegiac tale of the decline of whaling and New Bedford, contrasted with descriptions of the life of the Inuit, before and after the coming of the whalers to the Beaufort Sea area. Main focus at end is on the disastrous season at Pt. Barrow of the whaling fleet which abandoned over 25 ships, but managed to rescue over 1200 whalemen. p. 89: When a library was donated to New Bedford by the Friends Society in 1813, a committee of members went over the list of books and discarded many, such as several foremost English poets and Shakespeare's works, as unfit for young people to read. This opposition to certain aspects of culture and the arts, implemented by the influential Quaker leadership, was dominant in the New Bedford area for many years. -

VJ DAY: NORTHERN IRISH AND LOCAL LINKS WITH THE SECOND WORLD WAR IN THE PACIFIC, 1939-45 By Dr Éamon Phoenix, Historian and Broadcaster Joyous crowds in Armagh celebrate the surrender of Nazi Germany on VE Day, 8 May 1945 VJ DAY, 15 August 1945: LOCAL CROWDS CELEBRATE THE END OF THE WAR This week marks the 75th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War. As the last stroke of Big ben died away at midnight on 14 August, Clement Attlee, the new Labour Prime Minister, stepped to the microphone and gave the dramatic news that Japan had surrendered unconditionally. ‘The last of our enemies is laid low’, he told the ecstatic crowd in central London. ‘Today is VJ Day!’ The news, flashed to the four corners of a tense and expectant world, stated that Emperor Hirohito had accepted the Allied ultimatum at Potsdam and was ready to order his forces to cease fighting at once and lay down their arms. The Allied terms had demanded the elimination of ‘those who have deceived and misled the people of Japan into embarking on world conquest’. However, there was no attempt to pin personal responsibility for the war on Hirohito himself. This loophole was seized upon by Tokyo following the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japanese cities by the United States and the Soviet declaration of war on Japan. Almost immediately after the Prime Minister’s broadcast, VJ celebrations broke out in Belfast, Armagh, Portadown and other towns across Northern Ireland, As on VE Day three months earlier, many people began dancing in the streets, even children of tender years were out with their parents singing. -
